In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to pick out and cook chicken in a safer manner. Consumer Reports recently said that 2 out 3 chickens they tested were contaminated with some bacteria. They said even organic chickens were contaminated but at a lesser rate. So when you are buying a chicken at the store make sure you put it immediately into one of those plastic bags to prevent any bacteria from moving from the chicken onto any of your other food items, especially unbagged veggies and fruits. Also make sure the bag your chicken is in is sealed properly . Also it is probably a good idea to pick out your chicken at the end of your grocery shopping rather than the beginning – so it stays as cool as possible for as long as possible.   Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy shares tips on how your diet can effect your bone health. Building strong bones is important if you want to avoid getting osteoporosis.  A recent study found that in Asian countries they don’t consume the amount of dairy we consume here yet they have a low incidence of osteoporosis. The Asian diet consists of low acid foods like fruits and vegetables that help the body consume the calcium they get through the foods they eat. The thinking is that because we consume so much acidic animal protein here we are having a difficult time absorbing the calcium and that is why we suffer from osteoporosis at greater rates. So for good bone health and strong bones to prevent osteoporosis try a low acid diet that is high in fruits and veggies and low in meat. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains why you should drink more pomegranate juice. As you may remember I shared the simple way to peel a pomegranate a couple of years ago. Click here to read how to peel a pomegranate Now Dr Fitness found research that says drinking pomegranate juice is also good for you – surprise surprise. Pomegranate juice is expensive but it is antioxidant rich and has been shown to inhibit some cancers. The fruit is only available a few months out the year in the late fall – early winter. So if you want your pomegranate fix year round then the juice is pretty much the only way to go. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite snacks. Snacking can blow up your diet faster than you can say Ben and Jerry. So when you choose a snack to eat during that mid morning or mid afternoon lull go for something that is nutrient rich but not too filling. Remember, a snack is just a little something to take the edge off your hunger pang until your next meal. Some good easy, quick and healthy snacks are: apple slices with peanut butter; a handful of almonds, walnuts or edamames; dried fruit; rolled up turkey with a bit of avocado or some hummus with carrots.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
