And don’t forget walking in the pool. You can’t pass a senior community without a handful of  ladies walking back and forth in the pool either reading a book or chatting with their friends. Working out at home with an exercise dvd is another great activity for seniors. Also using resistance bands to do strength training is very beneficial. That bag or can of beans that you have had for months in your pantry can be cooked up and added into salad, soup or even a salsa. Beans are a great source of protein and fiber. And that bag of frozen vegetables that seemed like a good idea but you have not figured out the exact right meal for them is perfect for your next dinner. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with award winning science journalist Gary Taubes, author of the controversial book Good Calories, Bad Calories. Fats, Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health. He believes that the fewer refined carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be because carbs increase insulin levels which causes obesity, increases your hunger and decreases your metabolic efficiency. Not only that but he says that refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the most likely dietary causes of Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases. He says exercise does not make us lose excess fat – it just makes us hungry. And obesity is the result of excess fat accumulation not overeating and not a sedentary lifestyle. So according to Gary eat all the protein you want, he says their is no upper limit on your protein consumption – just avoid the carbs and you’ll lose weight and also be healthier. Put down the broccoli and pick up the pork rinds! His mostly protein based eating plan is a favorite of Atkins and South Beach diet lovers like Jimmy Moore with Livin La Vida  Low Carb www.livinlavidalowcarb.com . On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Kara Wily, who’s hot new exercise dvd Element: Slim & Tone Pilates dvd is available now. Her Pilates technique is sure to give you that dancer body that you’ve always wanted.Kara is a former dance with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and was the Director of the Pilates Program at the Performing Arts School in Vienna.  Her dvd shows you how to lay down in order to get a great workout.
