In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to choose the right fitness program for you. Choosing an exercise program that fits is a little tricky. Most people don’t think much about it and just join a gym or they buy a treadmill. It is much better to choose an activity that you like to do rather than doing something that you think will whip you into shape. If you don’t really like to attend spin classes then you will probably quit at the first schedule conflict. So first get a doctor to check you out physically to get their blessing. Then pick something that requires you to move and fits your age and health.  And don’t jump right in -check it out first – go to a class or take the exercise equipment for a test drive. Once you decide you like it then go for it.   Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how counting calories can help you lose weight. Studies say that their is a better chance for you to lose weight if you keep track of the amount of food (calories) you consume. By writing down what and when you are eating you have a greater awareness of how much and why you eat.  Write things down as you eat and drink them rather than waiting until the end of the day and trying to remember – because invariably you will forget that handful of candy at your friends desk or that bite of hamburger your kid didn’t finish. And beware – restaurant calories are much higher for the same foods as home cooked meals because restaurants love to use a lot of butter in their dishes which adds lots of extra calories that you wouldn’t have at home.  Remember, if you bite it – you write it. (Same with drinking – but I don’t have a rhyme for that.) Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of our most essential tips to help you lose weight. Before you can begin to change any behaviors it is important to assess exactly where you stand in the present. So use a diary or journal and write down what and when and why you eat and  exercise. Once you see where you are and decide you truly want to change then you are ready to tackle one behavioral change. Start slowly. A first change might be to drink less sweetened beverages each day – with the objective to cut them all out over time because you don’t want to be drinking your calories. Another change might be to add some exercise or fitness into your daily routine.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. He has been using the Nike Plus for about a month to track his runs. But he doesn’t like to listen to music when he runs so be bought a wrist band that tracks his runs instead of his iPod. John said you don’t even have to buy Nike shoes to use this device you can just get a velcro pouch and put the little monitoring thingy into and put it on any shoe. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain the benefits of vacationing at a weight loss spa. There are now so many places you can go for a relaxing vacation where they will also teach you how to lose weight. These weight loss spas usually have a counselor on staff to teach you how to set goals, go over any medical concerns and really dig deep into why you have failed when you have tried to lose weight in the past. Each day you will be taking healthy eating cooking classes, exercise classes, even meditation and other stress relief classes. So next vacation consider one of these more productive spas where you’ll learn important skills that will help you live a healthy active life instead of the trips that include all you can eat buffets filled with mediocre food and statues made of butter. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Marta Montenegro with SobeFit magazine. So far Marta’s Montenegro Method has helped us lose over 20 lbs so far. As always she gave us some great weight loss advice and support. She explained that by making small changes and sticking with them until they become a habit before moving onto the next change will help us stay compliant and stick to our plan longer. She said that if we have reached a plateau we should change up our routine. That means we should increase the intensity or duration of our workouts or decrease the number of calories we are eating. She said it is not okay to binge on the weekends, if we are getting tired of eating the same thing day after day we should change up the foods but not increase the calories. She explained the importance of pre-planning. By always having a healthy snack with you you can resist the urge to go through a drive through or raid the vending machine. And at restaurants choose the healthy option and avoid the creamy soups or salad dressing.  Subscribe to the best fitness magazine in America at www.sobefitmagazine.
