Most people want to improve their health.  In fact, most employees (80+%) will attempt some form of lifestyle improvement annually; but less than 20% are able to reach and sustain long-term goals.  Wellness professionals are well aware that little of lasting value, including health improvements, can be achieved without a supportive cultural environment.  We’ve learned that you can’t put a changed person back in the same environment, and expect the change to last.

Dr. Judd  Allen joined the show to share his expertise on the importance of supportive cultures within an organization.  Judd is President of the Human Resources Institute, LLC, a research, publishing and consulting firm, www.healthyculture.com.  He earned his Ph.D. in Community Psychology from New York University and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Health Promotion. Dr. Allen is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Wellness Institute.  His most recent books are Bringing Wellness Home, Wellness Leadership and Healthy Habits, Helpful Friends.

Judd not only explained why a supportive culture is important to worksite wellness; but he also shared how important the household is in supporting behavior change, and the need to create a wellness culture in the home.  To hear our entire interview with Judd on these and many other interesting topics, simply click on this link, Interview with Judd Allen.

The hosts also asked Judd what he felt was the most successful engagement strategy to get members to participate in health and wellness programs.  Here’s the link to Dr. Allen’s insightful response:  Judd Allen’s Engagement Strategy.

Jane Fonda Lorraine Chilvers Michelle OzumbaJane Fonda founded the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention in 1995 to combat Georgia’s number 1 ranking of the highest teen pregnancy rate.  With the help of their organization, Georgia now ranks 10th.

Jane and Michele discuss the social, economic and financial aspects of their non-profit.  Not only do they serve young girls who may have their first child as young as 10 years old, but they save the State of Georgia $224 million per year by doing so.  Many non-profit organizations have felt the strong impact of the economic downturn, however, they create a positive “GDP” for Georgia in the work they do.

Listen to our conversation as Jane and Michele explain how childhood pregnancy is an economic and financial issue impacting the poorest demographic and how GCAPP achieves this positive impact on the state’s economy and to their clients.

Angela Durden is owner of WRITER for HIRE! — a company focusing on providing words and graphic design to the business community, and WRITER for HIRE! Press — a company providing publishing services to authors. She is a three-time author, has completed a novella, and is almost finished with a crime novel set in Georgia.

She can be reached at angeladurden@msn.com or her office at 404-315-7740. Her portfolio can be viewed at www.angeladurden.com

Andy Orlin has played guitar since he was 14 years old; more seriously from around 17-23 and then again for about the last 10 years.  In between was spent building his careers and raising two daughters. He enjoys a mix of music leaning towards Americana, Chicago Style Blues, and Texas Swing as well as the British blues scene.  He was in a performing blues style band from 1976-1980 with Scott Trowbridge called The Cliftones.  His current band King Brisket Boys is a continuation of that earlier endeavor. To find out his playing schedule and locations, he can be reached at aorlin@bellsouth.net.

Joe Gransden is the soul of live Big Jazz and Big Band. Clint Eastwood discovered his talent and described Joe as “a young man with an old soul and a classic voice.” Kenny G, the saxophone great, says, ” Joe Gransden is one of those rarest musicians that has it all. He is an incredible instrumentalist with the technique of a virtuoso.”  Joe performs worldwide and has recorded over seven CDs. Jazz aficionados, musicians, and locals gather to play, listen, and bring live Jazz to life at Joe’s Jazz Jam every Tuesday at Twain’s in Decatur.

The parents of some of Chicago Joe Jones’ students believe his approach to teaching and performing merits a wide audience. They believe Joe possesses a unique set of skills and qualities that make him unusually qualified to work with young musicians who wish to play rock and roll, blues, and jazz. Joe possesses an uncanny ability to connect with young people. Perhaps a level of skill which has come from a lifetime of teaching kids, nevertheless his combination of patience, understanding and just plain “cool” makes him a special person to all of his students.

Reid Hutchinson is the President and Founder of NRG SVRS “Energy Savers,” an Atlanta based whole house, turn-key, Home Energy Savings Company.

Founded in 2007, the company’s realistic goal is to cut home energy costs in HALF! Reid says “Zone/Decentralize using Mini-Splits” is the most cost effective way homeowners can make a significant reduction in energy costs and energy consumption. Reid has launched and successfully grown NRG SVRS during a difficult economic time period when other companies are trying to survive. He believes the launch of NRG SVRS went smoothly due to preparation during the Research and Development stage of his business. He says “The combination of saving money, saving energy, and helping homeowners is the reason why people want our service.”

Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Reid was an entrepreneur at the age of 7. His first business was “Cheap Choppers,” a lawn mowing service company. Realizing the cyclicality of the spring/summer business, he would shovel snow in the fall/winter. He later expanded his offerings by hand washing cars. By the time he graduated from high school, his first business had over 30 weekly clients year round! Reid prides himself on running a lean operation and keeping his employees motivated and tied to performance. Competitive by nature, he was the captain of the football and baseball team in high school, and played college football and rugby. Today he is still active, and plays flag football and softball at the Brookhaven Boys and Girls Club. His Boulder, CO roots played a significant role in the development of the energy savings company, NRG SVRS.

Reid graduated with a business degree from the Calloway School of Business from Wake Forest University with an emphasis in Entrepreneurial Strategy. Reid believes it is the entrepreneurial spirit that drives him as a business owner and entrepreneur. After graduating in 2002, Reid moved to Atlanta to work for SunTrust Bank, where he acquired the entrepreneurial business fundamentals he utilizes today. He is currently a member of 6 business partnerships at various stages and industries, and has identified 8 additional business ventures he would like to pursue. He considers himself a ”get it done” businessman, where rolling up the sleeves and setting an example with his associates at NRG SVRS is a daily occurrence.
