Laurie Bassi, CEO of McBassi & Company, and Author of Good Company talks about Business Success in the Worthiness Era

February 6, 2012 by angishields

TUNE IN to Chic Perspectives, February 14, 2012 at 10am ET to hear Laurie Bassi, the CEO of McBassi & Company and Chair of the Board at Bassi Investments, Inc.

Laurie is one of the world’s leading authorities on the emerging “decision-science” of human capital management—the processes and practices within an organization that align the management and development of employees with its business results.  She loves working with clients to help them improve organizational performance through targeted, effective strategies for managing and developing their people.

She has overseen the development of the McBassi People Index®, a powerful tool for pinpointing and improving the unique people-related drivers of an organization’s business results.

Prior to launching McBassi & Company, Laurie served as the director of research for Saba Software and as vice president at the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD).  While at ASTD, she created internationally recognized standards for measuring and valuing firms’ investments in education and training, and a core set of quantitative indicators for measuring the effectiveness of knowledge management initiatives. She has also served as the director of several U.S. government commissions, and as a co-chair of the Board on Testing and Assessment at the National Academy of Sciences.  The early years of Laurie’s career were spent as a tenured professor of economics and public policy at Georgetown University.

Laurie has authored over 80 published papers and books, and is a sought-after speaker both domestically and internationally.

She holds a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University, a M.S. in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University, and a B.S. in mathematics from Illinois State University.

Laurie will be joining us live in our 200 Peachtree studio to discuss “the worthiness era” and how local companies and business owners can mold their companies to fit into the worthiness era and how they can be successful in 2012 and beyond.

You want to write about your life, a memoir of high points and maybe even the low points.  You think about leaving a legacy to your children and grandchildren.  Perhaps you want others to learn from your mistakes or avoid possible heartbreak.  It is a great idea; however, writing in a timeline fashion – I was born . . . I went to school . . . I graduated . . . I got a job . . . I struggled with . . . I overcame it by  . . . is not going to generate a whole lot of interest even among your children and grandchildren.  You have to write with passion which may  include humor as well as some painful recollections.  Many folks believe they have “poured their heart and soul on the paper” when in fact they have written little.  What they see in their minds as they write and what ultimately appears on the paper are not necessarily the same thing. Today’s guest has successfully taken the pictures and images, call them memories, that she held inher mind and got them on paper.  Dr. Shirley Garrett wrote A Tap Water Girl in a Bottle Water Word: Reflections on Belonging and Believing.  How did she do it  – get her stories on paper in full color?

Carrie Bellware has spent a good bit of her career working for non-profit organizations.  Shortly after moving to Atlanta in 1996, she began working with Jewish Family Services on a part time basis.  After ten years with Jewish Family Services, she took a quick hiatus away from Atlanta.  After a few short years away, she moved back to the Atlanta area, and accepted the position of Executive Director with Senior Services North Fulton (SSNF), where she’s loved her job for the last 18 months!  SSNF is a non-profit organization providing Meals on Wheels, medical transportation, senior centers and a staff of in-home care managers.

Joining Carrie this morning is SSNF board member, and returning guest, Sue Sharpe, Owner of Mobility Express.  Carrie and Sue particularly wanted to highlight SSNF’s upcoming event, Art from the Heart, their annual fundraising gala being held at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek on February 11 at 7PM.  They tell us this is a “Don’t Miss” event with dinner, music, dancing and a silent auction.  For more information, please visit their website at www.ssnorthfulton.org, or call them at (770) 993-1906.

Originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, John McNair graduated from law school at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.  Wanting to further his education, John came to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, ultimately received a Master of Tax Law degree.  He began his private practice in 1983, and spent the first decade on estate planning, probate and taxation.  Today, John is a Partner in the firm Barnett, McNair, Hall LLP.  Over the past fifteen years, John has been thrilled to see his practice start to gravitate towards Elder Law.  He takes particular satisfaction in being able to help seniors find funds to pay for their long term care, and in helping them preserve the estates they have worked so hard to build.  Contact John via email at jmcnair@barnettmcnair.com, or via phone at (214) 691-7781.  You can also visit his website at www.mcnair.elderlawanswers.com.

We want to thank Griswold Special Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Special Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Dallas and Atlanta for 20 years.

Jonathan talks to Dana Barrett and Dr. Alan Urech about Excel Federal Credit Union. Excel is an employer-based federal credit union and 200 Office Affiliate based in Norcross, GA. It was started way back in 1952 by a group of federal employees wanting a place to put their money where it would work for them – not someone else. Excel serves over 400 companies and, unlike most banks, Excel is not for profit. This means that rather than looking to make money for investors, everything they do is about serving their customers. Jonathan also talks about some specific local businesses that Excel has helped including medical and office buildings in Canton, assisted living facilities, a hotel and retail center in Augusta, local churches, and even a charter school in Smyrna. Excel’s website can be found here.

Write Here, Write Now departs from the usual focus on book writing for this edition but the intent remains the same:  bringing insights to business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals.  What are important considerations for writing an article? Is it possible that the book you have in mind could actually be the foundation of a solid and informative article?  We’ve invited back two former guests who in their first appearances shared insights on the books they have written or helped to write.  Echo Garrett’s first appearance on Write Here, Write Now was on our October 18th show.  Dr. David Galloway was interviewed on December 20th. Both Echo and David have written a variety of articles for publication.  Today they tell us about that aspect of writing and their thoughts, suggestions, and wisdom on the challenge and value of writing articles for publication.
