An overarching theme in each edition of Write Here, Write Now is encouragement.  Through our guest interviews and conversations, Write Here, Write Now seeks to provide encouragement to those who harbor a desire to write but who have yet to do so. We all have a story, a unique insight, an amazing memory or a hope to share with others. The guests on this edition of Write Here, Write Now provide pure encouragement to those who long to write but have hesitated to start.  Emily Francis found herself consumed with fear and anxiety which kept her from pursuing personal goals and dreams.  Her journey to overcome the fear and anxiety is shared in her book:  From Fear to Faith.  Jim Harvey had a successful career with IBM and a second successful career in commercial real estate brokerage and development.  But stories from his childhood of German submarine activities off the shores of America echoed in his mind.  Taking those stories and adding his own spin, Jim wrote a novel:  Grayton Beach Affair.  Listen and be inspired and encouraged by these writers and their success moving beyond “I’ll write someday” to getting their stories in print.

Today’s show is dedicated to the Emory Healthcare’s Wesley Woods campus.  The Wesley Woods campus is a pristine, wooded 64 acre piece of property near Emory University in Atlanta.  In the early 50s, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church had a mission to take care of older adults, especially the poor.  To that end, the conference passed a resolution to build its first residential retirement community, Wesley Woods Towers, which opened in 1965.  Seven years later in 1972, Budd Terrace, a skilled nursing and subacute rehab center opened.  This was followed by the construction of the only free standing geriatric hospital in the country.

Joining us today are six members of the Wesley Woods team, representing a variety of its facilities and disciplines.  Joyce Wilson is the Administrator of Wesley Woods Towers, a 200 unit independent living community.  She has been with Wesley Woods for nearly 40 years!  She was joined today by one of her residents, Dr. Joyce Meyers-Brown.  Dr. Meyers-Brown had been a minister in South Africa in her career.  She and her husband retired to Decatur, and later decided to move to a retirement community.  After looking at several, they chose Wesley Woods Towers.  She loves the spirit of community, as well as the quiet waling trails throughout the campus.

Carly Ortlund is the Director of Admissions at Budd Terrace.  Carly’s job is to facilitate a person’s transition into and out of the facility.  Faced with the reality of social work after she graduated from the University of Georgia, Carly tells us that Bud Terrace rejuvenated her spirit about nursing homes.  She loves the staff that is so focused on the well-being of its residents and their families.

Dr. Doris Armour, MD, went to med school in St. Louis to become a primary care physician.  Upon moving to Atlanta, she immediately took a position at Wesley Woods.  Today she is the Medical Director for the Wound Therapy Clinic.  Dr. Armour tells us that the Wound Therapy Clinic at Wesley Woods treats wounds that are chronic in nature, and are generally caused by other healthcare issues.  Dr. Armour was joined from the clinic by Marion Waugh, a Certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse Specialist who moved to Atlanta from Canada in 2004.  Marion also acknowledges that she loves the community spirit of the entire Wesley Woods campus.

Finally, though not present for the show this morning, we wish to extend a special thanks to Kristi Sullivan, without whom this show would not have been possible.  Kristi invited each of the guests, and arranged a schedule that worked for all involved.  Kristi is the Senior Outreach Liaison Market Development for the Wesley Woods campus.  Thank you, again, Kristi!

We also want to thank Griswold Special Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Special Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Dallas and Atlanta for nearly  20 years.

As a Senior Consultant with the Organization Capability Group of BP-Amoco Corporation, she was responsible for organization development consulting and training services which enabled her client divisions to achieve their strategic objectives. Having lived and worked in Europe and Africa, and North America, Jackie now calls Atlanta home.

For Alan Schaefer the rock star dream began years ago when his older brother took him to see a stadium concert featuring “The Who” as a birthday present.  While his interest in music remained strong, he temporarily shelved his childhood dream and by the time he went to college, he was more interested in the hotel industry than in the music business.

While pursuing a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management he suddenly found himself battling a still unexplained life-threatening illness, which in turn made him rethink exactly what he wanted to do with his life.  After recovering, he quit his job at a local hotel, started playing guitar and writing songs eight hours a day and joined his first “real” gigging rock band.  He earned his BS in Communications at Florida International University, and then promptly moved to Atlanta to start a band with his twin brother.

After working at WEA Distribution, Alan was promoted to assist in managing up to thirteen label radio reps. Elektra Records then hired him to do radio promotion for heavyweight artists such as AC/DC, Metallica, Tracy Chapman, and Phish.

In 1994 he left Elektra and co-founded Tourdates.com with his twin brother. This was an online music resource for bands and fans that was successfully sold to Launch Media (now Yahoo Music) in early 2000.  He stayed on for a year as VP while continuing his musical pursuits.  In 2004 he founded the band Five Star Iris and has since performed in 16 countries (including Iraq for U.S. troops), received national airplay, been interviewed in Spin and Billboard, worked with Grammy Award-winning producers, written with hit songwriters and toured with platinum acts.

Alan realized that the valuable lessons he learned from playing in bands could be applied to teams in a number of different environments, including the corporate world.  His fascination with why certain bands had success and longevity while others fell apart turned him into a student of collaboration and group dynamics which ultimately led him to create Banding People Together, a dynamic musically themed corporate team building event and workshop.
