This week on Heel to Heel, Elizabeth Gordon, President and founder of Flourishing Business, talks business with

Patricia Bowen, Consultant of The Bowen Group and Kimberly Weeks CEO of BKonnected Marketing, LLC, representing Atlanta Women in Business Loans Non Profit.  Atlanta Women in Business Loans (AtlantaWomenInBusinessLoans.org)

After decades in the corporate world, Patricia Bowen is currently directing her efforts toward fundraising and grant writing for non-profits in metro Atlanta. She started out as a copywriter for a multi-level marketing company that recruited women who had few decent earning options ‘back in the day’, and she’s never stopped supporting girls and women, no matter what her position, no matter what her company.  She moved on to a career in high-tech, eventually directing business partnerships in fourteen countries with dot.coms to Fortune 50 tech companies.  She earned a business coaching certification and then coached executives on her international teams, and went on to form her own company, Change Agents LLC.  Most recently she cofounded a senior move management company, Get Ready for Tomorrow, which helps the families of senior citizens downsize and move, and liquidates estates.

Pat has a Masters degree in Psychology, is multiple entrepreneur, a certified business coach, trained grant writer, experienced fundraiser, and currently sits on the boards of three metro non-profits, helping them raise funds to better serve their clients in need.

Kimberly West Weeks has been in the financial services industry for over 25 years, her career began with Wachovia Corporate Services and for the past 16 years, Kim has focused on providing financial services to community banks across the country.  She was President of QwickRate and most recently, IDC Deposits.  Today, Kim is CEO of BKonnected Marketing, LLC, which provides drip marketing services and sales consulting to small businesses and community banks across the US. www.BKonnected.com

Pat offered great advice to help all women recognize, believe in and learn to employ their own inner qualities and strengths. Listen up ladies, this will allow you to go confidently through your life, long after your ‘babeness’ has faded.

Her words of wisdom include –

We don’t need permission to be who we want to be and to go after what we want, but we may need help.

Seek help wisely, without giving up ownership of your dream.

You can never pay back all those who have given to you.  Pay it forward.

Kimberly shared great advice from her successful business journey in creating BKonnected’s multi-media and marketing approach to staying connected and communicating consistently allowing clients to build better, long-term relationships and grow with new clients.

Losing weight is hard for everyone – so don’t get frustrated but the lack of progress you may experience from time to time. Here are a handful of weight loss tips that we stole from our first book that will help you blast through plateaus and get you moving to your goal weight.

  1. Write Down Your Big Why – writing down your goal is important but when you combine that with knowing the really big reason why you are trying to lose weight is the secret sauce that makes this work.
  2. Ask for Help – Some times you need help but sometimes you need a helper. You can’t do everything on your own ask for help from someone who does this everyday and helps lots of people. Your helper might be a personal trainer, a nutritionist even a radio host
  3. Baby Steps – Don’t make dramatic changes – Have a big goal but break that goal down into lots of little action steps. Then focus on making that small action step happen – once you’ve mastered that action step then move onto the next one. Repeat until and check your progress until you’ve achieved your goal.

We have lots more weight loss tips in our first book You Can’t Lose Weight Alone. The Partner Power Weight Loss Program. You can download that entire ebook for free (for a limited time) by clicking the link at the very top of our website. If you like it…please share it with your friends. If you don’t…please share it with your enemies.

Guest Post: Powerhouse

April 14, 2011 by angishields

So much emphasis is placed on the “core” these days, most people who exercise regularly today can tell you that by using their abdominal muscles, they will support their backs in exercise.  Pressed further, most people understand the relationship of good posture and that it is also necessary for good back health.  But how does a muscle group above the waist support a narrow column of bony vertebra that stack on top of one another?   In the Pilates technique we use Joe Pilates’ term, the “powerhouse.” The Powerhouse includes the abdominal, inner thigh, and hamstring muscles, a band of strength that wraps around the body like a cummerbund.  This term represents the muscle groups that keep the pelvis and spine in good alignment.

When a sapling needs support to grow straight, it is common to tie rope or wires from the trunk to stakes in the ground to help it grow up.  The muscles that attach to the pelvis assist in much the same way.  However in our bodies we posses a set of muscles that pull our pelvis up in the front, up in the back, down in the front and down in the back.  It is the balance of these muscles that are important in keeping us upright and unencumbered.

The rectus abdominus (six pack muscles), oppose the Rectus femoris (a quadricep), the Sartorius (a skinny muscle that begins at the top of the outside of our thigh and attaches at the end of the inner thigh), and the Tensor fasciae latae with their attachments on the crest of the hip.  Behind us the erector spinae (back muscles) and quadratus laborum pull up in opposition to the hamstrings.

Once those guide wires are in good placement, the trunk of that tree intrinsically has strength from the structure the bark gives it and the cells of xylem and phloem that give the tree its rings.  We have a ring of muscle that wraps from either side of the spine to the front of our bodies called the transversus abdominus and then we have our own built in cross wires called obliques.  The external obliques start from the midline of the various rib attachments to insert more laterally in the pelvis; and the internal obliques attach from the more lateral aspects of the ribs to insert down medially at the pelvis.  These muscles weave together on each side of our body in such a way that not only allow us to rotate around, but also hold the spine erect when tension is placed on each end of these muscles.  As discussed this tension comes from the guide wires that pull the pelvis up and down in the front and back of the body: a powerhouse of support that affects all of the parts of the body both above and below.

So, when you are aware of the abdominal muscles working to support the back do remind yourself  to lengthen your body when utilizing that abdominal strength.  Your spine and your waistline will thank you.
