Cheerleading is getting more and more popular as a recognized sport. Now you can watch cheerleading competitions on ESPN and in the movies. This recognition has helped grow the sport but it has also increased the injury factor as well. As teams become more competitive they perform riskier and riskier routines in order to stand out in the judges eyes. Cheerleaders are getting injured regularly and the cheerleader in the flyer role is getting hurt the worst. Here are some things to look for in a good, safe cheer team

  1. Emergency plan – ask what the emergency safety plan is and how it would be implemented
  2. Medical exams – make sure they insist that each child gets a medical exam prior to joining team
  3. Qualified coaches – background checks on the coaches along with checking references from past employment is always a good idea
  4. Certification – National cheerleading certifications are also good guides to a reputable team

Nameth, Alex compressedDallas has had it’s share of icy weather this year, and Alex Nameth was ready for it!  Originally from Detroit, he has 40 years of experience with winter driving.  Attending Michigan State University, Alex received a degree in Social Work in 1972.  Upon graduation, he was lured into the burgeoning information technology industry, where he worked in sales for 30 years for IBM, Digital Equipment Corp and Novell.  Like many of our guests, Alex was personally impacted by the availability of care for seniors.  His father was diagnosed with Alzheimers, and needed assistance.   After moving him to an assisted living community in Dallas, Alex realized his father needed more socialization, and there was a distinct gap in the availability of services.  Though his father passed about 18 months ago, Alex felt compelled to fill a need in the local community providing a variety of daytime services to serniors.  Today Alex and Barb Nameth own Friends Place of Mckinney, an Adult Day Services community in McKinney, Texas.  To arrange a tour, or get more information, call Alex at (972) 569-9000, or visit them on the web at www.friendsplaceads.com.

putting your car seat in safely is critical to keeping your child safe when you drive. The Fat Guy could never do this right so he went to the fire station and the nice firemen helped him. Here are some basic rules but each state has their own laws regarding child safety car seats.

  • Infants 0-1 years old and are under 20 pounds  should be in rear facing car seats in the back seat
  • Toddlers 1 and older who are over 20 pounds can be in forward facing car seats
  • Older kids then move to a booster seat up until they are 8 years old
  • Kids 8 and older will want to move to the front seat – but fight that urge. You want to avoid your kids controlling the radio as long as possible

As more and more children are playing sports they are at risk for concussions. No matter how much you love the Three Stooges nothing is funny about getting whacked in the head. A Concussion is usually a temporary brain injury caused when you are hit in the head or the chin. Look for these symptoms.

  1. Vomiting
  2. Headache
  3. Change in behavior – like from Charlie Brown to Charlie Sheen
  4. Clumsiness
  5. Confusion

If you see these concussion symptoms then get medical attention.
