Teriyaki seems to make everything taste better. This teriyaki burger recipe is so simple the Fat Guy can do it. Take about a pound and half of ground beef and mix in salt and pepper. Heat the grill – wait for it to get pretty hot. Now drop you 1/2″ thick hamburger patties on the grill. Less than 5 minutes on each side and you should be good. You don’t want to flip them too many times and you don’t want to push down on the burgers either. Baste the burgers with the teriyaki sauce towards the end of your cooking. Slice up some zucchini and throw that on the grill and try that on your burger as well.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. What I Would Say to My 320lb Self of Ten Years Ago If I Could

January 18, 2011 by angishields

This post was written by Jim Hodgson

I remember stepping on the scale for the first time and seeing the needle swing all the way around past 300 into some incalculable territory that it was never meant to measure. I tell people now that I once weighed 320lbs but there’s no way that bathroom scale was accurate. Could it have been 340… 350?

I don’t really have a good excuse for how I got so big. I just stopped looking at myself in the mirror and didn’t think about it. I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day — the hard core, full power ones too. Not the light ones. The light ones are for children.

Time to Change
When I saw the scale indicating over 300lbs I said okay, that’s about enough, and I decided to change. I remembered how much I enjoyed riding my bike to school as a kid, so I bought a BMX bike just like I’d had back in the day. I started riding it to work every day and immediately lost a good bit of weight.

Have you ever lost 60lbs and still been fat as hell? I have!

I also remember the first time I ever ran purely for exercise as an adult. It was on Monroe here in Atlanta, heading north from St. Charles. I made it to the intersection of Monroe and Virginia, or about .4 of a mile, before I had to stop because I had a splitting headache. I didn’t even get far enough to be out of sight of my starting point. I felt like the fattest, most useless lump of lard that ever gobbled a cheeseburger that day.

Reasons for Not Starting
I had a lot of reasons for not starting. I thought people would laugh at me.

“Look at that fat douche,” they’d exclaim from red convertibles stacked high with buxom blondes, “Let’s all laugh at him!”

That never happened. Not only did no one ever make fun of me for attempting to improve myself, most people who saw what I was trying to do were approving and supportive. Some were extremely helpful and shared stories of their own trials and tribulations.

Time Travel
If I could go back in time to deliver a message to myself of ten years ago, I would say something like this:

Hey, no one is looking at you. They are busy with their own lives, and if they want to laugh at you, let them. It’s better to be laughed at than to die young and miserable, which is where you are heading.

Get up and start. It doesn’t matter what you start, just start, right now, today.

Jim Hodgson has  lost more than 110lbs over the course of nearly ten years without the aid of surgery or drugs and he talks about it on his blog. He also loves design and marketing, so he started a new media marketing firm.

As Michael Douglas so aptly illustrated last night on the Golden Globes throat cancer is one of those cancers you can pretty quickly bounce back from. It is usually pretty localized and if you catch it soon enough you can deal with it before it spreads. The survival rate is about 60-70%. The usual treatment is a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. Try not smoking or chewing tobacco if you want to avoid getting throat cancer. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. I did some research the other day and discovered that Lisa Lillien made her first Hungry Girl appearance on our show at the end of 2005. At that time all she was promoting was her super popular daily newsletter – that offered food swaps, calorie counts of favorite foods and stuff like that. Since then Lisa has added over 1 million readers to her daily newsletter, has written a bunch of NY Times best selling cookbooks and has now launched her own Hungry Girl TV show on the new Cooking Channel.

Lisa took us behind the scenes of her world a little bit and talked about what it takes for her to put that show on. She had to learn how to cut, cook and tell stories while looking at the camera. She produced 13 episodes in about 5 weeks. Upcoming episodes feature: chocolate, surprises and swaps, filling foods and more. You can check out that show every Saturday at 4pm or throughout the week – because they replay the show all the time.

Lisa also gave us some tips, shared her favorite music, her favorite kitchen appliance and her go to knife for chopping things up on her show. She loves pop music like Katy Perry and 80s pop has a special place in her heart. She wore the BodyBugg religiously for awhile. Her go to appliance in the kitchen is the Magic Bullet Platinum Pro and she uses Global Knives on her show. She is finishing up her new book 300 Recipes Under 300 Calories which will be out soon.

To learn more about what is happening in the wonderful world of the Hungry Girl please go to her website www.hungry-girl.com
