Vacation Travel Healthy Eating Tips

July 14, 2010 by angishields

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some great vacation health tips. If you are going to be driving all day – it is a good idea to get some exercise in beforehand – because once you’re in that car you won’t be burning many calories.  Prepare lots of healthy snacks to eat in the car in order to prevent trips through the drive through or be tempted by all the unhealthy food choices there are on the road. Healthy snacks like sandwiches, wraps and veggies and fruit you can eat with your hands without making a mess work great. If you’re traveling by plane be sure to bring some trail mix or energy bar that you can keep on you in case there is a flight delay. On a cruise try and avoid the overeating that goes on at the buffet.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Charlene Wisdom and Patrick Shanahan compressedA “natural” in the studio, Charlene Wisdom started her career in broadcast production and public relations.  She started working in the senior care arena about five years ago driven, in part, by a strong love for her geographically distant grandparents.  As the Community Ambassador for Silverado Senior Living, she has developed a number of surrogate grandparent relationships!  Charlene can be reached at (469) 525-8868, or visit them on the web at www.silveradosenior.com.

Patrick Shanahan spent more than 26 years of his career in Information Technology.  Motivated by a desire to run his own business, as well as  a need to do something noble, Patrick opened the Senior Helpers Personal Care Agency in Irving and Lewisville.  Similar to Charlene, Patrick was also shaped by a personal experience in sharing the responsibility of remotely providing for the care of his father in his battle against cancer.  Patrick can be reached at (972) 823-1333, or visit him on the web at www.seniorhelpers.com.

Patrick and Charlene came together as a result of a desire to create an organization that was more than just a business networking organization for the senior services industry in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  Their vision was for an organization that also gave back to the community in the form of education and outreach.  To do this, they partnered first with the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce in January 2009 as the Grapevine Senior Services Alliance.  Since then, they have expanded this initiative to Irving and Lewisville, and look to add several more Chamber of Commerce relationships in the coming year.

Dubrinski, Lauren compressed

Art has always been an important part of Lauren Dubrinsky’s life.  She received Art and Art History degrees from SUNY Binghamton.  She was minding her own business doing her job as a real estate photographer at a senior community when the community mentioned that they wanted to start an art program in their community.  Having taught art to children in the past, Lauren had no idea what she was getting into when she agreed to teach art to senior adults.  Her art classes at facilities like The Cohen Home in Alpharetta are now an integral and rewarding part of her week.  She loves the work she does with these seniors, and dearly cherishes the relationships she’s developed with so many extraordinary people.  Lauren can be reached at laurendubrinsky@comcast.net, or (678) 458-3474.

Dodge, Connie compressedConnie Dodge, originally from Illinois, originally received degrees in Communications and Urban Studies in college.  She has been a professional storyteller for more than 20 years, both telling stories and teaching story-telling.  This intriguing vocation led her to interact with many senior adults that would take her story-telling classes.  As a result, Connie developed a passion for working with seniors.  Today she is the Activities Director for The Cohen Home, in Alpharetta.  The Cohen Home is a very intimate setting, with only 22 residents, and an incredible staff to resident ration of 1 to 5 (state requires at least 1 to 15)!  Call Connie at (770) 475-8787, or email her at connied@cohenhome.org to arrange for a tour of The Cohen Home, or visit their website at www.cohenhome.org.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Dr Barry Sears, creator of the Zone Diet. Dr Sears is the leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. His theory is that you have to keep your hormones in a zone that is not too high or too low. He believes that the food you eat has the biggest impact on your hormone levels and therefore your weight and your health. He says when your hormones are out of whack you become sicker, fatter and dumber. His solution is to get rid of all the vegetable oil in your pantry, eat less processed foods, eat less foods with Omega 6 fatty acids, eat more foods with Omega 3 fatty acids, eat smaller portions, eat more vegetables and have some cod liver oil everyday. He says your Grandmother was right – as you will notice that is the same advice she was giving you. He also gave a great tip on how to check out your fish oil supplement to make sure it is good. Here is Dr Barry Sear’s Fish Oil test – take a handful of fish oil supplements cut them open and dump the oil in a shot glass – then put the shot glass in the freezer. After a few hours check on the oil – if you can put a toothpick through the oil and it didn’t freeze then it is probably okay – if the oil is solid then it probably is not pure fish oil and you should look for another brand.   Dr Sears talked about the new Anti-Inflammatory Diet and what he calls silent inflammation. He also has a new book out titled Toxic Fat. Please go to his websites www.drsears.com and www.zonediet.com

Kirk and Ken Driskell Share the Story of a Family of Entrepreneurs

July 12, 2010 by angishields

Ken Driskell launched a bank in 1983 and hasn’t stopped helping to build businesses since then. He has served as a mentor to his son Kirk as Kirk has grown his highly successful real estate business, Power Realty Partners.

There have been many lessons learned and much wisdom passed along over these years, and Ken and Kirk will share all of that and more with us on our broadcast. As you will see, the Driskell clan are born entrepreneurs.

Our guests:

Kirk Driskell

Kirk DriskellKirk is a Georgia native and remains a Milton, Georgia resident with his wife Deena of 8 years and their three children.  Being raised in a home that promoted faith, relationships and encouraged the entrepreneurial spirit, it was inevitable that a once door to door rock salesman as a child would continue into his adult life as a salesman.  After graduating high school in 1993 then attending Reinhardt College, Kirk obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Shortly thereafter he received his real estate license and then went on to obtain his real estate broker’s license in 2002. That same year he founded Power Realty Partners as a full-service real estate brokerage company serving its clients’ real estate needs in the areas of residential, commercial, investment, resort and property management.

With a strong personal commitment to community service, he serves on the Board of Directors for Three Dimensional Life, a non-profit organization based in Gainesville, Georgia whose primary purpose is to make a positive impact in the lives of troubled teens, the Alpharetta Rotary, and Life Impact Ministry that partners with strategic churches and leaders of men that share a strong desire to reach next generation leaders.

Kirk Driskell, Power Realty Partners, 178 S. Main St., Suite 300, Alpharetta, GA 30009, Telephone 770-888-7653,  kirk@powersoldit.com

Ken Driskell

Ken spent 30 years in banking and served as Chairman and CEO of First Colony Bank from 1983 to 2003 when he sold the bank and retired from traditional banking.  The ESOP plan that he set up for his bank ensured that his employees shared in the wealth created by the successful sale of the bank.

Ken has been a real estate investor all of his life, but he had another interest that serves anyone well who chooses real estate as a career—he took stand up comedy classes and performed at Punchline to improve his public speaking skills. And it worked as he went on to be a key note speaker at banking conventions all over the United States.  His ultimate goal for all of this was simply to enhance shareholder value thus ensuring that the bank was sold at a premium price.

He is the author of “How to Make Your Banker Say Yes” and has spent his lifetime mentoring his son Kirk.  Today, he and his wife and daughter own and operate a highly successful youth gymnastics center in Alpharetta, GA where he continues to exude the entrepreneurial spirit that has always marked his career.

Ken Driskell, All Around Gymnastics, 5500 McGinnis Ferry Rd., Alpharetta, GA  30005 Telephone:  770-475-8188 http://www.allaroundgym.com/about/
