In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how many calories are in movie popcorn. If you want to see something really scary at your local movie theater this summer ask the guy at the concession counter for the amount of calories in each of their bags of popcorn. Once you see those calorie counts you’ll have nightmares. At most theaters a large tub of popcorn has around 20 cups of popcorn and can get to 1200 calories, 980 mg sodium and 60 grams of saturated fat. And when you add butter and throw Raisinettes into the tub like the Fat Guy does, the number goes through the roof. If you want to go with the large tub then at least share that with your whole row or at least with the people sitting on either side of you. A better bet is the small – that usually only has around 6 cups of popcorn and is around 400 calories. Now whatever you do – do not sneak in your own snacks – movie theaters make the bulk of their money from the concessions not from the movie tickets. So if you want to have a movie theater in your neighborhood support it by buying something from the concession stand. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. and help you lose weight. You wear the Gruve on your waistband of your pants and it records all the activity you are doing throughout the day. You then plug it into your computer and you can literally see a minute by minute graph of your daily activity. The Gruve is based upon the work of Dr James Levine’s non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT. They created this device because one of the main differences between fat people and thin people is that thin people move more throughout the day than fat people do. And we are not talking about thin people exercising like crazy and running marathons they are just moving around more. Created with help from the Mayo Clinic the Gruve encourages and tracks all of your movement – in accordance with the NEAT method of exercise and weight loss management. It actually vibrates when you are sitting around too long in order to encourage you to get off your butt and move a round a little bit. During their research in creating the Gruve they discovered that Gruve users increased their activity behavior and that caused a drop in their blood pressure and blood lipid levels along with weight loss.
