In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain negative calorie foods. A negative calorie food is one in which the amount of calories it takes to digest the food is more than the amount of calories the food has. For example say a piece of broccoli has about 25 calories and it takes your body 80 calories of energy to digest that piece of broccoli then you have theoretically created a deficit of 55 calories. So according to this theory you are losing weight while eating certain foods. Foods that burn a lot of calories to digest tend to be healthy fruits and vegetables like: berries, celery, grapefruit, cabbage and cauliflower. Sounds a little fishy but eating more fruits and vegetables are good for you. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened with Lenore Skenazy, sometimes called America’s Worst Mom because she had the nerve to let her 9 year old ride the subway in NY alone. And if having a kid riding a subway alone wasn’t enough she has even tried to get kids to play on playgrounds without their parents around. Can you imagine that? Lenore has written the book Free Range Kids: How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts With Worry) which talks about giving your kid a little more freedom to play and explore outside on their own. Lenore’s book is a common sense guide to parenting in these uncommonly overprotective times. She says we have forgotten what kids are capable of, and don’t realize that the crime rate is down from when most parents were kids. She is on a mission to get kids outside – exploring and entertaining themselves in a safe manner. This is a must have book for today’s over protective parents – check it out at www.freerangekids.com

This week on the Chic Perspectives Show I had on Gail Dunn, President of Women’s Automotive Connection, Inc  www.womensautomotiveconnection.com and Anne Fleming of Women-Drivers.com.

To start with Gail Dunn brought her extensive and varied business background and unique perspective to the Chic Show today.  Gail worked as a Consultant in Organization Development before entering the automotive field in the collision industry. As estimator and body shop manager, Gail has had opportunities to interact with the public extensively regarding their problems with repairs. She is dedicated to the premise that customer service needs to be brought back and the needs of the customers must come first. Gail is I-CAR platinum certified, ASI trained, and has a reputation in the industry for her scrupulous honesty and grim determination.

Gail talked about why she began focusing services on women (even though many of her clients are men).  Women have long been treated with disdain when entering the arena of automotive service, sales and related repairs. Gail intends to reverse that process and elevate the women to the level of astute, competent customers, who will be a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Her company Women’s Automotive Connection gives the customer the recognition and care they deserve.

She helps consumers buy a car and avoid the nerve-wracking hassle that many assume is inevitable in the car buying process.

Gail talked about doing your research. Starting with exactly what you want to purchase. Gathering the information on the cost. Her company can get dealerships fighting over you to sell the car at the lowest price. She can tell you about holdbacks, rebates, and dealer costs that will save you money.

Gail’s Women’s Automotive Connection offers great tips on car maintenance too.  Definately check out the free newsletter as well to up your car savvy – a must for any empowered chic woman.

Did you know how important correct tire pressure is in aiding increased gas mileage?
Or that tires and brakes are your first line of defense ? Or the number one factor in engine performance ?  Gail talked today about how to maintain and get the most out of your car.

My next guest was Anne Fleming, Car Buying Advocate & President, Women-Drivers.com

Anne Fleming, Car Buying Advocate & President of Women-Drivers.com®, once struggled with negotiating at a car dealership. Now, she has vast knowledge in this area and shares her insights on negotiating and creating the best dealership experience possible.

Anne’s goal is to empower women to take charge of their automotive experience and have it be rewarding each and every visit. Appearing in the Wall Street Journal, ABC News, USA Today, Anne has effectively used social networking to elevate her company to the national spotlight.

Anne talked abut what can women do to empower themselves at the dealership.  Her site www.women-drivers.com allows women to share their voice—write a review and share with family and friends

Listen to learn how you can be empowered at the car dealership.

Make  a contribution to other future women car buyers of your city and write a review.

Anne talked about how to determine what kind of negotiator you are.  Take her Interactive Negotiating Test and find out if you are a Driven Diva, Brazen Babe, Cozy Chic or Virtual Vixen?

Read HER & HIS Car reviews—from two Points of view.

Anne talked about what women experience buying cars and the findings of a new report that compares the car buying experiences of Women over 40 to under 40.  The report reflects the Women Satisfaction Index® scores, or WSI® as well as other data found in the reviews of women’s experiences.

The consumer rating company found that the experience of purchasing a vehicle was less satisfactory for women under 40 than for women over 40. The top line data suggests that women over 40 are more confident, relaxed and expressed when buying a car than their younger counterpart.

Her company research the rating data provide insights and trends regarding the purchase experience at car dealerships.

What the report concludes is that regardless of age, ethnicity or marital status, women want to be treated with respect, spoken to truthfully, and to feel included in the process.

More importantly Anne says women want to feel confident about their ability to make good decisions, in a process that may or may not be familiar to them.

Cleve Hill and Brad Beisbier, SrFor the May 27, 2010 Family Business Radio program, hosts Pat Romboletti and Meredith Moore welcomed commercial banker Brad Beisbier, Sr, Vice President RBC and Cleve Hill, Attorney at Law with the Bettis Law Group.

Most banking relationships are based on the need for capital and cash management needs. But as Brad said, your banker can actually be one of your trusted advisors and actually a business partner if you develop the relationship strategically. For instance, quarterly reviews with your banker are a very useful tool for you as a business owner because it is easy to lose sight of long-term goals when you are focused on the day-to-day. Your banker can give you their perspective from the outside looking in. Quarterly meetings can also be used to put plans in place that help you better take advantage of opportunities when they arise. Pre-emptive actions that Brad suggested: be as transparent as possible by sharing financial statements and tax returns.

Additionally, Brad said to consider including more than just the founder at the table when the banker is there, especially invite all potential players in the company’s succession plan. In this way, relationships develop all the way around.

This opened the door for a great discussion on the importance of getting out from under the day-to-day details to develop long-range goals.  Cleve noted that in working with his clients, he seeks to put together a full compliment of trusted advisors who act as an informal board so that you can gain valuable third-party perspective and input.

From an attorney’s point of view, Cleve pointed out that in putting together your team of advisors, particularly as relates to succession planning, your team of advisors should be tuned into your specific needs. “The advisors that most often fail are the ones who come in with a pre-packaged plan and say this is how it has to work,” he said. Rarely are answers arrived at in one meeting. It is most often an in-depth conversation that takes place over time, he said.

In case you need incentive to do your estate/succession planning, Cleve shared a worst case scenario from real life.  He shared that a business owner died suddenly with no will, no trust, no planning, children from two marriages and left the business with substantial debt. In the aftermath, the family disintegrated and untold amounts of money have been spent on litigation and the continuation of the business is in jeopardy. It is a textbook case of what you don’t want to happen.

So—where to start with estate and succession planning?  Among Brad and Cleve’s suggestion are life insurance, buy/sell agreements and developing key employees outside the family as leaders in waiting. Cleve said, “These are moving pieces, depending on what can be afforded, what can be agreed upon. Do a cost/benefit analysis. Also be mindful of the psychological piece—and answer the question “what can we live with?”   Cleve’s insight on Georgia law was especially enlightening and not what you might have expected.

This discussion provided excellent specific suggestions that any business owner can use immediately so don’t hesitate to download the entire discussion.  You will receive loads of practical information for your family owned business on these complex, but very necessary issues.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy talk to Steve Below, author of Pigskin Dreams: Living A Hall of Fame Life. Steve interviewed dozens of NFL Hall of Fame football players (like: Larry Csonka, Howie Long Long, Mike Singletary and Dick Butkus) to understand what made them succeed. Three of the key findings for success were: strong maternal influence; importance of play in order to explore the world and they each had a difference maker or mentor who influenced them dramatically. The lessons (think, say, do, be) are extremely valuable. Here are some of the Top 10 things every parent needs to know about kids and sports: 1-let the kids have fun 2- parents are the real head coaches 3-don’t live vicariously through your kids and 4-let your kids make their own decisions about the sports they play. To learn the rest of the list and to get more information about this great gift for the football fan in your house please go to www.pigskindreams.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy discuss the research on sunscreen and cancer. It seems that people are putting a little too much faith in how sunscreen helps protect themselves from the threat of skin cancer. According to recent research less than 10% of the sunscreens tested performed as advertised. Between the fact that most people don’t use the proper amount and when  they do they apply it incorrectly to some sunscreens having less spf protection than they say they have. The sunscreen industry has a lot of work to do to get their act together. For a complete list of the best and worst sunscreens out there – please go to the Environmental Working Group’s website at www.ewg.org for their sunscreen guide.
