Elizabeth & Mollye

Thanks for tuning in to the Chic Perspectives Show today on Business Radio X where we hear the success stories of women business owners, industry trends and innovative ideas – and help other women business owners put themselves in ‘higher heels’ and ‘succeed in style’- their own personal style.

My first guest joined me in the studio – Mollye Rhea, President and Founder of For Momentum, www.formomentum.com,  in addition to being a successful entrepreneur Mollye is also an expert in the area of cause marketing.

For 25+ years, Mollye Rhea, President of For Momentum, has conceptualized, developed and spearheaded programs for cause and partnership marketing to benefit non-profits and corporations at both national and local levels.

When Mollye Rhea founded her company, For Momentum, in May 2003, she realized that there were very few agencies specializing in cause marketing. Since then, For Momentum has grown to become one of the leading cause marketing firms in the country.

Mollye talked about how she got started in her business by leveraging her broad base of experience  working in advertising, corporate marketing, and nonprofit marketing.

This background created the right synergy for the For Momentum business model.

Mollye talked about how she created For Momentum to strike a better balance with her lifestyle wishes and values.

She selected cause marketing because it is her passion.

For Momentum serves three specific target audiences:

  • Nonprofits who desire to expand their resource base through corporate partnership.
  • Corporations who want to leverage their philanthropic support for expanding their business -- also known as strategic philanthropy,
  • Traditional marketing, advertising and pr agencies who want to round out their full service services with a cause marketing offering.
  • Mollye talked about what cause marketing is, why it works and how companies do it.

CSR are an important part of today’s business model.

She talked about how businesses of all sizes are leveraging the power of cause marketing to generate sales, positive PR and community reputation, employee loyalty and affordable solutions are possible — you don’t have to be a huge corporation to make a difference.

As entrepreneurs, Mollye said we have the opportunity to establish a business model that matches our lifestyle and life stage needs.

Her advice to other female business owners — Develop systems that match your business and budgetary needs

      • project-based compensation models
      • telecommuting business model
      • employee-specific definition of “full time”

You also won’t want to miss Mollye’s “Chic Tip”: As entrepreneurs, we have the opportunity to establish a business model that matches our lifestyle and life stage needs. Don’t let the “conventional models” limit your thinking.  If you have a will, you can make your own way.

Go to www.formomentum.com and sign up for our Cause Alliances Insights e-publication — found on our website under “News You Can Use”

My next guest was Lori Rosen who called into the Chic Perspectives Show from the Big Apple to share her entrepreneurial experiences with us.  Lori is the owner of a public relations firm in New York, The Rosen Group http://www.rosengrouppr.com which celebrated its 25th anniversary in November 2009.

Last year, Lori solicited a company in Switzerland, and became Managing Partner of Blacksocks (www.blacksocks.com) NA, a web site that delivers socks by subscription. It’s aimed at busy men, who want the luxury of having socks delivered to them (rather than going to a store) –just when the one sock disappears. Blacksocks is a thriving business in Europe, with 40,000 active customers.

Lori talked about operating her PR agency, managing the ebbs and flows in the economic cycles, and how her company has evolved over time.  She also got into wha it was like starting a new business with its own set of challenges in a down market.

Blacksocks is run out of the agency-and most of the marketing is done through PR, in addition to google ad word and SEO.  It was interesting to hear Lori talk about how from a PR perspective what’s it like to be both the client and the agency and for the first time, have a very clear understanding from the client’s point of view.

Lori talked about both businesses-owning and operating aspects of a PR agency; and

what she’s learning from customers about the sock-scription business model, need vs. want, purchasing timing and creating urgency.

Thanks to my wonderful guests for sharing their stories and advice with our ever growing listen base.

Tune in next time for more chic business talk.

Until then… wishing you all Chic Success,

      Elizabeth

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why there is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution backlash. First, we are big fans of what Jamie is trying to do. Moving kids away from processed school food to a more fresh and healthful menu is a good idea. And sadly we have such bureaucracy in the school system that it is difficult to make these changes. And are we really shocked that when given a choice between stir fried vegetables and french fries more kids want the fries. Jamie should be congratulated for even trying and his methods should be implemented over a long time rather than a few weeks. And guess what, when the kids have only choices between healthy foods then they will prefer eating healthy food. And parents I don’t really care if my kid prefers chicken nuggets or pizza over veggies – our job is to feed them foods high in nutrition not just foods they like to eat. Maxine Burton

On Thursday, May 13th, hosts Meredith Moore and Pat Romboletti were honored to welcome Maxine Burton, president and founder of burton + BURTON™, a family-owned and -operated business since 1982 based in Bogart, Georgia that is one of the largest suppliers of balloons and coordinating gift products in the world.  With husband Bob serving as CEO and with son and daughter working in the business, Maxine’s company offers more than 15,000 products including latex and foil balloons, ribbon, floral supplies, plush ceramics and baskets.

burton + BURTON™ is imbued with family. It is the essential characteristic of its corporate culture. “The business is important because it supports us, but family is the main thing,” said Maxine. Very early, she realized that since her customers were mostly family-owned businesses, they liked knowing her family. So her children often traveled to gift shows with her and Bob. Now her two grandchildren do. The children greet customers at parties and hand out cookies to them. Their pictures appear in catalogues and they inspire product design. And not to be out-done by the younger generations, her mother still works at the company—arriving every morning at 6:00!

This total family approach permeates the relationship with employees. “I want to know all my employees and their families,” Maxine said. “We like to say that we work hard and play hard.” She is a big proponent of in-house wellness programs, like high-blood pressure checks and mammograms. burton + BURTON™ also has had an in-house beauty salon since 1987. “It’s important for our employees to feel beautiful. They’re on the front lines—the clients are not only talking to me. Besides, any company can have a product. Our people are actually the number one thing we’re selling,” she said.

Because of Maxine’s collegiate background preparing to be a teacher, she is a big believer in education, even to the point of developing a Balloon University held each July at the Atlanta, Dallas and Chicago gift markets. “It’s where we educate our customers on how to use our products. We also hold business and design classes. It makes sense to us because we need our clients to be profitable. I see it as a big circle,” Maxine explained.

During the current recession, burton + BURTON™ had to make changes, like every other business. “We had to do more with less,” she said. “But we do see the recession coming to an end. We had tremendous January shows, especially compared to last year.” One tactic Maxine pursued throughout the downturn, though, was to continue to develop new products. “Our customers want to see what’s new, regardless of the economic climate,” she said.

There is so much more to the story—from philanthropy to the story of how Maxine and her company dedicate themselves to continuously designing new and exciting products.  So please download the hour-long discussion.  We are certain Maxine’s enthusiasm for her business, her family, her employees and her customers and her commitment to her community will inspire you.

Caroline Griswold grew up wanting to make a difference in peoples’ lives.  A Gwinnett County resident since the age of six, Caroline received her Associates Degree in Behavioral Science from Georgia Military College, then went on to University of Georgia to get her Bachelors Degree in Social Work.  Caroline observed social workers making a huge difference when her grandmother struggled with cancer at an early age, and it made a lasting impact on her.  Today, Caroline is a Social Worker at Gwinnett Medical Center’s Center for Neurosciences.  She loves her work there because she has the opportunity and the encouragement to put patients and families first!  Caroline can be reached at (678) 312-066, or via email at cgriswold@gwinnettmedicalcenter.org.

MacMillan compressedChuck and Dara McMillian are the owners of a unique company called My Accessable Home.  Though there are a few other companies in the Atlanta area that specialize in renovations for seniors and disabled adults, their business is unique in that they bring a wholistic approach to the process.  This is due, in large part, to Dara’s background in social work.  Dara grew up in a family of health care professionals.  She received her Masters in Social Work from Boston University, and spent more than a decade as a social worker and a geriatric care coordinator.  Dara moved to the Atlanta are in 1996.  Chuck McMillan, on the other hand, grew up in Sandy Springs.  He has spent most of his career in the remodeling business.  Blending the talents of the two McMillans has resulted in an incredible benefit to their clients as they truly understand both the physical and social needs of their clients and what will be needed to make their home safe to live in as they age.  Chuck and Dara can be reached at (770) 715-5242.  Visit them on the web at www.myaccessablehome.com.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share a great healthy version of the classic pasta and sausage recipe. Using a soy sausage as a substitute can save you calories and fat grams. Also try Barilla pasta as a healthier pasta choice. And try making your own sauce – that way you can put in all your favorite vegetables and season it to your taste – not Paul Newman’s. And a great resource for discovering the best tasting soy sausage swaps or best tasting low calorie pasta check out our good friend Lisa Lillien at www.hungry-girl.com.
