On Thursday, April Family Business Radio hosts Meredith Moore and Pat Romboletti were happy to welcome this week’s guests—Erick Papp, international executive for 28 years, and Richard Bennett, business and corporate law attorney with Kitchens Kelley Gaynes, PC.

The big take-away from this week’s discussion was that the seemingly treacherous waters of global business begins and ends with one’s own assumptions about the way things should be. Before venturing onto the global stage, you really need to be open to different, sometimes radically different, perspectives.

This insight first emerged when Erick talked about his stint in Ecuador as the manager of a banana plantation. In this capacity, he was actually responsible for a broad range of duties, across all functions, so that he was, in fact, fulfilling the role of what we would call in the States a CEO/COO. As Richard quickly pointed out, in different countries, titles mean different things, something that is true of a whole host of concepts. It is the wise business owner who scopes out as many of these differences as possible—and continues to stay alert to learning the local customs along the way.

Erick and Richard also discussed tax issues as relates to international business. Erick began by pointing out the big similarity—that is, all governments try to take as much money in taxes as they can. Sad, but true, across all cultures and countries. From there, though, taxation morphs into a thousand variations. For instance, in Ecuador, a manager is personally and legally liable for any discrepancies in the company’s taxes. Also, taxes are paid in advance in Ecuador.

Between the two of them, our guests developed a quick list of questions for business owners to address—before opening shop outside the U.S.:

• Does it make sense to expand internationally?

• If so, how is the best way to accomplish that?

• Should the expansion be done in large leaps or baby steps?

• What is the best way to structure the international business—as a subsidiary, joint venture, co-owned subsidiary, etc.? Is local ownership required?

• Who are the trusted advisors, both domestic and international, that are needed to help with the expansion?

As always, the complete podcast, including tips from our pros, is available as a download. Please take advantage of our guests’ expertise and knowledge in this exciting area of international trade and manufacturing. Especially as relates to this last bit of wisdom: The behavior of people in another culture may not—probably won’t—conform to your expectations.

CIMG3087Today on the Chic Perspectives Show we shined the chic spotlight on 2 women entrepreneurs with inspirational stories of success.  They triumphed over obstacles, remained resilient in the face of fear and disaster and building thriving businesses with powerful value propositions.

First up was Judi Gerhardt, Owner of Career Fashion Consignment and an expert on professional image and non-verbal communication

Judi Gerhardt is a former political powerhouse, survivor of 2 hurricanes, a nasty divorce, chemo, & a spinal tumor. After her surgery and deciding that she’d had enough hurricanes, she moved back to Atlanta. In August of 2009, Judi launched Career Fashion Consignment. CFC is an extremely high end career clothing consignment store for men and women in Atlanta. Judi is committed to social & financial responsibility and helping Atlanta’s business community benefit from the retail excess of the last decade.

Judi Gerhardt is an incredible woman who was one of Maynard Jacksons campaign managers for mayor. She served as a political consultant for years in both Atlanta & DC until her travels took her elsewhere. She ended up in New Orleans where she owned a large equestrian farm for 16 years until Hurricane Katrina came in and destroyed everything she had built, including her 20 year marriage. Determined to stay in New Orleans and help rebuild, she was set to open another business when Hurricane Gustav came in and blew away that business, too. And, in the middle of all of this, her doctors discovered a tumor on her spinal column.

After her surgery and deciding that shed had enough hurricanes, she moved back to Atlanta. In August of 2009, Judi launched Career Fashion Consignment. CFC is an extremely high end career clothing consignment store for men and women in Atlanta. Judi is committed to social & financial responsibility and helping Atlantas business community benefit from the retail excess of the last decade.

Judi talked about what got her started in this business, what the company does and who their customers are.  Her business model actually serves two populations – those who bring in clothes for consignment sale and those who buy them.

We talked about how she came up with the idea to start Career Fashion Consignment (CFC)

Judi talked about some of the road blocks she has faced in her career and how she overcame them.

With such an interesting career with many twists and turns, Judi explained how she has been able to reinvent herself so many times.

We also discussed the green elements of her business.

Judi recommends women:

  • Shop Responsibly by Shopping Consignment
  • Pay attention to the impact of non-verbal communication & professional dress
  • Use consignment to get a return on your fashion investment   – I just love this way of looking at it
  • Understand the importance of social responsibility and the role consignment plays

Judi’s story is an amazing example of how resilient people can be, not to mention the art of reinvention and the business of social responsibility.Shes truly persistent, resilient, and the queen of reinvention. Judi is firmly committed to taking personal responsibility for her life and her happiness. She is truly an inspiration and a great example of someone who bounced back! Additionally, her commitment to helping Atlanta’s business community be more socially and financially conscious is a great story for the times we are living in.

Thanks also to Judi’s PR rep – Andrea Rizk, Founder & CEO of Rizk Public Relations

Instead of doing those static stretches where you touch your toes, or push against a wall, etc. try just moving around with a light jog in order to get your heart rate up.  By warming up your muscles gently through these dynamic moves you will get a better workout. Then after you exercise when your muscles are all warmed up then do all those stretches you used to do before your workout. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Do You Know What These Food Labels Mean?

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some misleading food labels. Food labels today sometimes don’t mean what you think they mean. For example Good source of Fiber rarely if ever means real soluable fiber. More times than not the food company is referring to the less healthful soluable fiber which they seem to be able to put into pretty much everything these days. If you see a product that says Real Fruit – don’t assume that the real fruit inside the product is actually the real fruit pictured on the label.  Sometimes the label could have pictures of exotic berries and delicious looking fruit with a big Real Fruit inside label but when you read the ingredients the “real fruit” inside is really mostly less expensive fruits like apple or pear with the good stuff buried at the end of the ingredient list. FYI the ingredients are listed in the order of most to least. Also Lightly Sweetened products can contain lots more sugar than you would expect.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
