In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some easy tips to control those cravings you have for sweets. First, don’t skip meals. When you’re hungry or even worse famished, you will eat anything and everything. If you keep a food journal and track when you eat and how you feel around the time you are eating then you can identify patterns and maybe even some emotional triggers to why you have these sweet cravings. Once you identify when you are most likely to want to eat sweets then try and add more protein to the meal before those cravings occur. This should make the cravings go away. And if you allow yourself to enjoy a taste or small portion of the sweet you crave that might just do the trick as well – just don’t overdo it.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Kelleman, WallyN. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community.  A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law.  After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm.  As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection.  But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.”  She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?”  Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369.  Visit her website at www.kellemanlaw.com, or visit www.nolo.com and drill down to Gwinnett County, Georgia.

Munster, DanAfter earning degrees in both English and History, Dan Munster did what anybody would do with those two degrees.  He went back to school to study Law!  Upon completion of his law degree, Dan had the privilege of working for Atlanta Legal Aid for five years.  During his tenure there, he was allowed to choose the area of law he wanted to practice.  Dan chose the Senior Citizens Law Project as a result of his relationship with his paternal grandmother, and her experiences as a senior.  Dan started his own private practice in 1999, and now is one of Georgia’s foremost experts in Medicare and Medicaid.  Dan can be reached 404-920-0521, or visit his website at www.georgiaelderlaw.net.

Stan Epperson and Deli Provision Company: Preserving a Fourth Generation Brand

April 14, 2010 by angishields

Stan EppersonBoar’s Head Provisions is a fourth generation family-owned business that began in New York City in 1905.  The founder, Frank Brunckhorst, had a very simple philosophy back then—-sell only superior quality delicatessen products—no compromise.  While competitors, faced with the challenges of rapidly expanding distribution, have compromised on their standards over time, Boar’s Head never has.

Key to the family strategy of careful expansion that holds to the roots of Frank Brunckhorst’s vision is their use of independent distributor’s such our guest on Thursday, April 15, Stan Epperson, Founder of Deli Provision Co. Inc. Stan launched his business in 1981 and, working closely with Frank’s descendants, has continued to uphold the high Boar’s Head standards as he has grown his business in the Atlanta region over the past 29 years.

Stan will share the rich history of Boar’s Head and the history of his own successful business, Deli Provision Co. Inc. There is much to learn about how to expand without jeopardizing the values that are at the heart of a family-business.

But Stan’s story doesn’t stop there.  After pouring himself into building Deli Provision Co, Inc, he has followed another passion that will be carried on by the next generation of Stan’s family—philanthropy.   Just as in building a business, creating a legacy through philanthropy can be fraught with pitfalls, so we have asked Stan to share the wisdom that he has gained along the way.

Rich history, successful expansion, uncompromising values and leaving a legacy are all covered in our show with Stan and you won’t want to miss a bit of it.

Our guest:

Stan Epperson graduated from Butler University in 1971 with a degree in Business Administration.  He then started his work career with Oscar Mayer and Co. in sales in Indianapolis, IN.  Over the next 10 years he held different sales management positions in Seattle, LA and Syracuse NY.  In 1981 he left Oscar Mayer and Co. and started Deli Provision Co. in Atlanta GA, which is the distributor for Boar’s Head Brand Products in the Atlanta metro area.

He is on the board of directors of several charities including the Brain Tumor Advisory Board at Duke University, the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, GOAL Scholarship Board and the Community Foundation of North Georgia.  He is also the trustee of the Epperson Family Foundation.  Stan’s personal interests include golf, snow and water skiing, hiking, biking and squash.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share the health benefits using more weight vs less weight when strength training. The age old debate which is a better workout less weight with more repetitions or more weight with less reps. Does more weight make you bulky and less weight make you lean? A recent study showed that women who worked out with more weight but less reps had better results – they lost the most weight and had lower body fat. Remember to you want to use enough weight (or resistance) to make it difficult – toward the end of a set you should have a hard time doing one more rep. If it is too easy to blow through a set then you should increase the resistance and/or the weight.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Now to get to know my next guests – the Choosey Chicks you have to hear their story:

Three Chicks began their discussion on the importance of making positive choices. All were determined to get the message out that from an early age, girls have choices. And women of ALL ages can be empowered by the choices they make throughout their life!

I was lucky enough to have 2 of these 3 fabulous chicks in the studio with me today.

Jessie Harrison had a background in the apparel industry and
thought that there was no better way to make this statement than to wear it.

Sara Cook had a background in fashion design, immediately named the company Choosey Chicks and worked on their “vision”.

As soon as you meet these awesome ladies, you can feel the genuine and heartfelt  message their company is founded upon.  They wasted no time in getting this powerful message out quickly, creatively and memorably. These shoppers extraordinaire decided that high end graphics on quality apparel would best carry the message – that we are all responsible for our own choices.

These shirts are super cool and a must have for summer.  Versatile light, high quality breathable material grants any of their shirts – gets instant top billing in my Tshirts pile – I will wear mine everywhere!

The message is one of freedom, responsibility and authenticity and I love the live and own your truth philosophy.  The shirts become a symbol of your decision to own your own power and happiness in your life.

Not only are the T’s comfy and cute, they also pack a powerful message that will make you mindful throughout your day of the choices you are making.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy  opened the show with Celebrity Chef and author Rocco DiSpirito.   Rocco had a lot to say about eating and health. He says that when he was growing up the dinner table was an important place for the family to bond. He said his family rarely are desserts or went out to eat at restaurants. He recommends that your family eat dinner together. He said that if you go out to a restaurant then enjoy the great food that the chef makes but just don’t eat a lot of it. He said some simple ways to get your kids to eat vegetables are: hide them in pizza and sauces; cook them properly and most importantly get them to get used to eating them when they are young. His go to ingredient is chicken stock – which he always has on hand to make soups and other healthy meals. He even had some dating tips for men – he said women love when a guy can cook a meal for their date. It is a very meaningful gesture that shows that you can take care of and nurture someone else. Rocco, shared some great cooking tips and recipes from his new book Now Eat This! Where he transforms a bunch of your favorite comfort foods into healthier, low calorie but still delicious meals. That book is of course a number one bestselling cookbook and you can find it at bookstores everywhere or online at Amazon. Rocco is also training for triathlons and had some tips about that as well. To learn more about what he is up to please go to his website www.roccodispirito.com or www.noweatthis.com

Try an air filter for your home. And try and remove all the dust from your furniture and throughout your home. Also wash your sheets and pillow cases more frequently during pollen season. Avoid cigarette exposure as well. Try and avoid dairy and gluten products if you have real bad allergies and eat more foods with omega 3 fatty acids. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
