On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Robert Davis, fitness journalist and author of The Healthy Skeptic. Today he shared some scientific truths about organic fruits, vegetables and meats. Organic fruits are those grown without pesticides and organic meats have not been injected with antibiotics and hormones. Today we ask the question are organic foods worth the extra money you pay for them at the grocery store? Robert is our resident health mythbuster. His health journalism background make him the perfect person to ask and answer these questions. His book The Healthy Skeptic: Cutting Through The Hype About Your Health is a must read if you get overwhelmed with information about heath, fitness, wellness and don’t know who is telling the truth. You can trust Robert. Regarding organic foods the questions you have to ask (and Robert answers in this interview) are: Are microscopic amounts of pesticides on fruits and vegetables bad for you in the first place? Is organic food healthier than non-organic food? And are organic foods safer for you? You’ll have to listen to find out. To get his book check out Amazon.com or go to his website www.everwell.com

Sara Burden, Walden Business

Sara Burden joined us last week and her tape is jam packed with great advice, so download and listen to Sara’s tape for a complete step-by-step guide to putting all the pieces in place for a successful sale that maximizes those multiples

But before we got into the details, Sara shared her insights on these volatile economic times and she has good news. She’s seeing more M&A activity since January of this year. Business owners are feeling like they’ve survived, she said—“The thaw has begun.”

Sara continued by discussing the not so intuitive idea that you should plan and work toward selling your business from the day you open your doors. You can do this by instituting best accounting, inventory management and quality controls practices in the early stages since what buyers look for are good, in-place systems. So—prepare your exit the day you open the door—and then stay on top of everything.

And if you didn’t do that planning in the first days, then what? Sara said that she likes to start talking to clients 1-3 years out from when they actually want to sell. That time frame gives her the best opportunity to assess the business and suggest and implement changes.

As part of the check list, Sara suggests that you eliminate items that don’t add value, such as obsolete inventory and underperforming employees. At the same time, she encourages clients to take actions that create value. For instance, update your website, something not many people would have thought of as recently as five years ago. These days, your website is another face of your company. It’s your digital footprint to go along with your physical one. Both must present the best image possible to buyers.  First impressions happen virtually as well these days.

She also stressed assembling the right professional team—attorney, accountant, business broker, etc. You want pros who understand your goals and objectives, and are willing to get on the same page with you. She said that you may have to sit them all down and say, “I want you to protect me, but I want you to get the deal done.”

And she noted that it could be that in buying or selling a company, you may need a different team than the advisors you’ve been working with. For instance, a transactional attorney, instead of a litigator. She also recommends that a seller hire a consultant who can help prepare the business for sale, prepare documents and do the negotiations. When the company is the seller’s baby, sometimes it’s a situation that’s just too emotional for the seller.

In addition to getting your advisors on the same page—you will need to be sure your family is too or the deal could fall apart at the last minute.  There are many more tips on Sara’s Podcast, so download it now.

Thank you Sara for being a part of our Family Business Radio community.

Wondering what’s in style this season?  Well you’ve come to the right show.  Today I talked with Karen Hughes who is a Certified Image Professional and the President of Owner of Image Assets.

www.ImageAssets.net

Early in her life, Karen knew she loved clothes, having learned how to sew at the tender age of 10, but she had a passion for teaching.   Spending a decade in corporate America honing her presentation skills she found herself again drawn back to fashion and clothing – she has a degree in fashion merchandising. Taking time off to raise her 3 children she began to formulate her vision for a new role as an entrepreneur.

It was with a passion for education and love of fashion that Image Assets was created. With a mantra to help women “look good, feel great and have FUN doing it”, Karen creates workshops and events that teach you how to build a wardrobe for the lifestyle that YOU lead, whatever your stage of life!

By enhancing your image through better style and dress, you can enhance your career progression whether its up the ladder or out on your own as an entrepreneur.

On the show today we talked about the 3 F’s of Fashion (Fit, Flatter, Feel-Good),

as well as the 3-Keys to Building a Wardrobe (Core-Accent-Accessories).

Karen revealed the biggest mistakes women make in purchasing clothes and she also explained why alterations matter.

For more about turning your image into an asset, keep in touch with Karen @

Check out Image Assets’ Trends with Friends Event on Tuesday the 2nd of March and the StyleCAMP at the end of the month.

Worst French Fries

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some facts about the beloved french fry. The french fries with the most calories are usually found covered in cheese and chili. The restaurants with these bad boys are Dairy Queen and Chili’s. Five Guys fries while delicious can contain quite a large number of calories (were talking thousands) especially when they throw in an extra handful of fries into your bag – which happens most of the time. The french fries that had the least calories were (wait for it) McDonalds – while the large amount of preservatives in their fries can make them look the same months – sometimes years later – they don’t have as many calories as their chili cheese fry fast food competitors. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on CNNHealth.com diet and fitness expert Dr Melina Jampolis. Dr Melina is also the chief medical officer of SmartNow.com as well. Dr Melina shared some tips to be heart healthy like don’t lose weight then turn around and gain the weight right back. This kind of up and down dieting is bad for you over time. She explained that losing weight lowers your risk of heart disease and lots of other diseases as well. She suggested eating oatmeal in the mornings as a healthy breakfast. She feels that people need support in order to stay compliant to their exercise and weight loss programs. And she begrudgingly agreed with the Fat Guy’s theory that you diet for weight loss and exercise for health. She added that exercise helps with weight maintenance once you lose weight. She also gave us some weight loss tips from her last book The No Time To Lose Diet, which is now in paperback. She also told us about her new Dr Melina Bar and where to get them.
