Grieco, Tony - cropped Nov 18 2009Tony Grieco  is the Executive Director of Ivy Hall Assisted Living  in Alpharetta.  One of seven children, Tony has always had a crowd around him, so he is in his element at Ivy Hall!  Listen in as he tells us how he made a decision to commit his life and career to serving seniors as a result of an article in Newsweek.  Though Ivy Hall is a beautiful facility, Tony tells us that “the magic is not in the bricks and sticks;  the magic is in the terrific people the make up the staff of Ivy Hall.”  One of the highlights of Ivy Hall is the food, cooked by a former sous chef from Chateau Elan.  Arrange a tour and maybe even a dinner by calling Tony at (770-814-0114).

Ross, Lynn - cropped Nov 18 2009Lynn Ross is a Social Worker at The Emory University School of Medicine.  She specializes in neurological movement disorders.  Though her title is a bit of a mouthful, Lynn’s role is to work with patients and families dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease and other ailments that manifest themselves through a deterioration of the part of the brain responsible for physical movement.  Given the permanent nature of this deterioration, Lynn’s has a critical responsiblity to gently educate and point patients and families to resources that may help them deal with this reality.  To this end, one of Lynn’s extracurricular passions is the American Parkinsons Disease Association (www.apdaparkinson.org), where she serves as the coordinator of the Information and Referral Center.   Lynn can be reached at Emory at (404) 728-6300, or at the APDA at (404) 728-6552.

Osheroff, McKeever - cropped Nov 18 2009Our final guests on today’s show are members of  Dekalb Medical Center’s Cancer Support Team.  With an MA from Tulane University in New Orleans, Margie Osheroff has always had a passion for serving people.  She was particularly drawn to Dekalb Medical Center because of the unique, holistic approach taken to patient care – dealing with patients and families, addressing emotional, social, financial and spiritual needs in addition to the physical needs of the patient.  Margie has taken this approach a step further by joining hands with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Troutman Sanders law firm to provide patients and their families with free critical legal assistance for items such as Power of Attorney and Living Wills.

Rose McKeever has been with the Cancer Support Team since its inception 19 years ago.  In fact, she has been with Dekalb Medical Center for 31 years!  Like Margie, Rose loves the holistic approach taken by Dekalb Medical Center.  She obviously loves her job, as evidenced by her tenure there.  Part of Rose’s responsibility is to coordinate a number of cancer support groups.  One in particular that is near to Rose’s heart is the Tree House Gang.  This is a support group for the children of cancer patients, and focuses on helping children adjust to the idea and reality of having a parent that is diagnosed with cancer.  Rose and Margie can be reached at Dekalb Medical Center at (404) 501-5701.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Heather Harvey creator of the Measure Up Bowl. Heather shared her story about how she created this innovative weight loss product. She had gained some weight during her pregnancy that she was having trouble getting rid of. So a nutrition coach suggested she should measure and weight the foods that she ate. So Heather figured out a clever way to measure foods you put into bowls. And by the way, she lost about 80 pounds. The Measure Up bowl is one of those product that once you see it you think, why didn’t I think of that – it is so obvious. The Measure up Bowl has subtle lines telling you how much you are putting into each bowl in quarter and half cup increments. You will not find a better product to control your portion sizes. Especially with cereal. Heather did a great job with the design and quality. These bowls are dishwasher and microwave safe. And Heather is trying to get them into a retail setting like Bed Bath and Beyond or Macy’s. So if you have any contacts with buyers there please let Heather know. Remember portion control is connected to weight control. Check out her bowls at www.measureupbowl.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share Dr Fitness’ favorite recipe for Edamame Soup. Somehow the Fat Guy missed the memo that the edamame bean is really just a soy bean. But give it some exotic Asian name and you can charge more for it at restaurants. Well the edamame /soy bean is packed with nutrients, proteins and omega 3 fats. It even has calcium and other essential vitamins as well. So an easy way to add some of this healthy goodness into your diet is to make a soup out of them. Make up some vegetable broth, throw in some shelled edamames, some ginger and more of your favorite spices and veggies and you’ve got yourself a hearty healthy meal. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy’s Wellness Minutes improve your health in 3 minutes a day or less. iTunes Follow me on Twitter @FatGuy

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains the truth behind magnets and pain relief. There is little scientific evidence to support the use of magnets to help with pain relief or help with arthritis pain. Lots of anecdotal evidence to support it though. Their is overwhelming evidence though that magnets are great to hang things on your refrigerator.  And if you hang up a funny quote or funny cartoon that might make you smile and that laughter might help you relieve some of your pain.
