On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Maureen Davidson The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Director of the Georgia Chapter. Maureen explained how to get involved and how this organization has raised close to $1 billion since its inception over 20 years a go. The Team is the first, best and largest charity sports training program. Almost 400,000 participants from first timers to seasoned athletes have trained with the Team and achieved their best at marathons, half marathons, triathlons, 100-mile century bike rides and hiking adventures. Participants enjoy working with their certified coaches and trainers who provide help with fitness, nutrition, gear and injury prevention. When you do a team event you get a trainer plus companionship and the support of a real team. They have events all over the country and for all levels of fitness. Nudging the Calorie Counters from Freakonomics Blog

Great post on Freakonomics blog in New York Times about how little nudges like calorie count labels on restaurant menus,  signs telling you how many calories you’ll burn walking from the last parking spot in a mall shopping center even stairs that play musical notes as you walk up and down them encourage healthy living.

We blogged about musical stairs in Stockholm that try to encourage stair-climbing rather than escalator-riding. One of the issues with this “nudge,” as Dubner wrote, is that it’s probably more fun for people to descend them than to ascend.

These stairs in Lisbon, however, address that problem by appealing to the calorie conscious.

About 75% of breast cancer deaths are from women who didn’t get an annual exam. Mammograms typically catch breast cancer in its most curable stage.
