On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Dr Sandy Venditti, Canada’s favorite dentist. Dr Venditti explained the importance of good dental hygiene and shared some great health tips from her new book Pearls of Wisdom.

Dr. Venditti has been a practicing dentist for over 14 years and really looked beyond the gums and teeth of her patients. She witnessed the pain – the fear and confusion – behind their eyes.

She knew many of her patients didn’t need to be in her chair – that what she was treating was easily preventable.   As a traveling dentist, Dr. Sandy has treated patients of all ages and nationalities, and found the same problems, the same fears. Dr. Sandy is committed to educating her patients about gingivitis prevention. She says that a healthy body begins with a healthy mouth.

She believes that there is no good reason why three out of four adults over the age of 35 have gum disease and tooth decay remains the most common chronic condition among North American children.  She believes it is through education and counseling that we can begin to reverse these current statistics.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to workout like Dr Fitness’ favorite fictional character Rocky Balboa. So if Eye of the Tiger is on your iPod get ready for this rocking workout. Create a theme song or soundtrack for your workout. You should have some go to songs on your mp3 player to get you moving when you feel like quitting. Rocky had Adrienne and you need a support system to succeed as well. Get expert advice – Burgess Meredith isn’t around anymore but experts are out there. Your exercise routine doesn’t have to be high tech with expensive machines or gadgets – chase a chicken or run up steps. It’s not going to be easy – you’re going to have to overcome obstacles – but don’t take any shortcuts and you can be a winner like Rocky – (he didn’t win in every movie, but he was a winner). On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Matthew Zachary, host of The Stupid Cancer Show and creator of one of the best cancer websites focusing on young people called I’m Too Young For Cancer Foundation. Matthew is trying to improve the survival rate and quality of life in young people who are suffering with cancer. That rate has not improved in over 30 years.

Here is Matthew’s inspirational story in a nutshell – he was a 21-year old college senior and aspiring concert pianist and composer en route to film school to become a Hollywood film composer when he slowly lost use of his left hand, was diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer (medulloblastona) and told he’d likely never perform again. Thirteen years, four albums and scores of concerts later, Matthew’s struggle to get busy living has inspired countless thousands.

Today, Matthew is an award-winning musician and composer, accredited thought-leader in public health, a leading authority on the youth cancer culture, a highly credentialed and coveted motivational speaker, and a burgeoning social entrepreneur with the founding of the I’m Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation in 2007, a pioneering nonprofit organization in the Web2.0/Health2.0 space that was recently ranked a TIME Magazine Best 50 Website for 2007.

A member of the prestigious Google Health Advisory Council, Matthew has 15 years of experience in advertising, youth culture marketing, information technology and visual communications for print and web in addition to strategic expertise public relations, consumer healthcare, nonprofit management and social media.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share how to burn more calories each day. Here are some easy ways to burn extra calories each day. Park far away. My dream is that mall or grocery store park lots will have signs posted at throughout the lot tell you how many calories you’re burning if you walk to the entrance from that point. Kind of like those signs at amusement parks that tell you how long your wait is from that point. Going for a walk at lunch will burn extra calories. At home set a timer and speed clean your house – you get a double bonus a cleaner house and a quick cardio fitness workout. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Today we talked to Paul Rosenfeld, with Fanminder, about how small businesses can leverage text/SMS marketing to grow their business. Fanminder is an online service that enables small business owners to easily and quickly send and receive all types of text messages to their customers.

Although historically leveraged by larger business, Paul believes that small business can use SMS technology to relay information, promotions, or updates to their customers and texting can be used effectively as a tool for retaining customers. Whether you are the corner coffee shop promoting an event, a restaurant advertising a lunch special, or the salon down the street with an open appointment slot, text marketing is a quick and easy way to reach your clients.

Paul also gave us an example of ways that text can be leveraged effectively as an internal communications tool, discussing the case of a gymnastics studio that used SMS among their staff to relay important updates with their schedules.

After talking to Paul about talking to people through their phones, we talked to Mike Cleary, vice president of Abcom, Inc., about face-to-face marketing. Abcom works directly with organizations or with their marketing agencies on the specialty area of face-to-face marketing, including trade shows and events.

With the downturn in the economy along with the rise of social media and online collaboration it should be no surprise that trade show attendance has been in decline for several years. However, as the tradeshows have gotten smaller, Mike says that the shows have become more efficient stages for selling as a higher percentage of attendees are qualified buyers.

Mike also shared some interesting information about selling at trade shows. For example, at a trade show, you have three to six seconds to stop someone and effectively communicate what you do or what you are offering. Mike advised that, instead of trying to say everything all at once, you zero in on the one thing that your target audience needs to see to stop them and bring them into your booth.

Thanks so much to Paul Rosenfeld and Mike Cleary for joining us!

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on one of Dr Fitness’ favorite authors. Dr. David Kessler. He is the former Commissioner of the FDA (the same guy who changed food labels and took on the tobacco industry)  and author of the bestselling book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. This book will change the way you look at food. In the book Dr Kessler cracks the code to why you overeat. He explains that the food industry has literally made it a science to figure out exactly what makes food so delicious and addicting. He calls these foods hyper palatable. These hyper-palatable foods have been engineered in food labs to actually change your brain chemistry so that you crave and want to eat more. Restaurants and food manufacturers combine fat, sugar and salt in cleverly delicious ways to make you want it more and more. They have come up with foods that have never existed before and that humans desire with such demand that many of these companies are multi-billion dollar money machines. Dr Kessler explains why you overeat and gives you some ways to stop. And stopping is not as simple as trying harder and having willpower because these foods change your brain chemistry much like drugs or nicotine does. In order to stop you have to treat your favorite trigger foods much like an alcoholic treats liquor. You have to avoid it and avoid the places it is served. And you can’t connect the food with emotional memories. Try to reward yourself and celebrate in other ways rather than eating and going out to restaurants.  To learn more please go to his website www.theendofovereatingbook.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share ways rearranging your kitchen can help you lose weight. You can use the fact that people are such creatures of habit to your advantage when it comes to losing weight. For example when you get home from work and enter your kitchen, you open the fridge and grab a cold soda. So if you move the soda to the back of the refrigerator and put bottled water in the front you’d probably grab the bottled water instead and save a couple hundred calories. So put the unhealthy snacks in hard to reach places and put the healthy snacks in the front. Do what they do at grocery store – put healthy things at eye level and put unhealthy things down low or up high in incovenient places. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
