Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, to paraphrase one of my favorite movies, always be serving.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:11] Right. There was a time back in the day that “always be closing” was kind of the philosophy of salespeople, and they’re always looking for that opportunity to close, and they’re always gonna have all these techniques and tactics to close. I think those days have kind of passed us by. And now, in order to sell somebody something, you have to be figuring out ways to always be serving them, always be helping them, always be educating them. That’s the path to sales success in today’s world, I believe very strongly. So, I changed the mindset of trying to sell somebody something you have to try to help people, try to serve people, try to educate people, and then the business is going to come to you over time if you do that kind of relentlessly.
Kara Brown is the Founder and CEO of SmithBrown Marketing, a fractional CMO and team focused on B2B sales and marketing alignment and execution. Originally from Chicago, Brown was one of the first employees of Echo Global Logistics, the first tech-enabled freight broker. Brown was a one-woman department single-handedly managing the company’s brand, image and marketing initiatives as the company grew 3000% in just over 3 years.
In 2008, she took on the role of Investor Relations and was part of the company’s successful 2009 IPO (NYSE:ECHO). This was all by the time she was 26. She was recruited by OHL (Ozburn-Hessey Logistics), at the time a $2B Nashville-based global supply chain provider with clients like Apple, Starbucks, Samsung, Sony and Remington.
A few years before OHL was bought by GEODIS in 2015, she kicked up a consulting practice in Chicago and was the fractional CMO for six transportation and transportation technology companies. In 2016 Brown and her family moved to Atlanta when she was tapped to be Rubicon Global’s first VP of Marketing.
Since then, SmithBrown has become a part of the Atlanta B2B marketing and sales landscape.

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, let’s talk a little bit about this concept of upselling, particularly in our environment.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:10] Yeah, upselling is a great way to offer an existing client more stuff. And as they are your client, you’re getting to know them pretty well, and you can ask them and you can see for yourself what other service that ties into what you’re doing everyday or what your super power is, what can they benefit from. So, upselling helps, believe it or not, in customer retention because you’re adding more and more value for your customer, so they’ll probably stick around, and you become stickier because you add more tentacles into their world. So, to replace you, now, they have to replace multiple services that you’re providing for them.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:48] So, in our case, some of the upsells or logical upsells are you can add social media amplification to their work. You can add some PR stuff. You can add some interviewing of their existing clients or of their staff testimonials. There’s lots of things you could be doing by using the toys that we have at our disposal to upsell them to more services. You could do conference work. You can show up at a trade show on their behalf. There’s lots of things you could be doing to help them become more successful and that deliver the stuff that they need that only you can give them. So, don’t be afraid to upsell. There’s a lot of opportunities.

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] Welcome back to BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, one strategy, one tactic, one way to go about building more relationships, getting the word out about what you’re doing, and establishing credibility, and just having a good time is teach a class. That’s been our experience, right?
Lee Kantor: [00:00:22] Yeah. That’s one of the kind of, again, elegant non-salesy ways to position yourself as a leader in your community and in your industry by teaching a class on something that we do every day. So, in our case, we’re experts, obviously, on how to network. You can teach a class on how to be a better networker. You can teach a media training class on how to interview or how to be interviewed. Those are other classes that you are qualified to teach by being part of the Business RadioX Network.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:51] Another thing is how to podcast, or how to produce a radio show, how to serve your community. There’s lots of topics that just by the fact that you’re being a Business RadioX studio partner or a Business RadioX host that you are now qualified to teach and your credential is that you’re the host of a radio show or you’re the person who runs the studio in your market.
