About the Author:

Carlton Scott Andrew, who goes by his middle name Scott, is a student of life and business, and passionate about sharing what he has learned with budding entrepreneurs.

He and his wife Daphne have together owned/founded and run thirty businesses, both national and international, and have disrupted several market systems, showing that inspiration, faith, and hard work make a near-unstoppable force. Their businesses include the furniture industry, the cleaning industry, the beverage industry, real-estate development, rodeo productions, entertainment, and more. As part of his “forever learning” attitude, Andrew seeks out successful people in all trades of life and studies their techniques.

Andrew has taken his passion for learning to East Tennessee State University and implemented the Rugged Buc Labs, an interdisciplinary “experiential” career skills accelerator that connects companies with students. His inspiring new book, The Rugged Entrepreneur, is a blueprint for business leaders and contains the knowledge that he has garnered over his decades in business. He and his wife live in Tennessee and have two grown children. Andrew is at work on his next book.

Serial Entrepreneur Offers His Motivational Blueprint to
Business Success
Your Guide to Disrupting the
Business World

JOHNSON CITY, TN — “Success is yours if you want it to be.” Those are the words of serial entrepreneur Scott Andrew, who along with wife Daphne, has built more than thirty different national and international businesses in the multi-million-dollar playing field. Now he’s telling you how he did it.

In his brilliant new book, The Rugged Entrepreneur, What Every Disruptive Business Leader Should Know, Andrew describes what it takes to achieve your dreams, and shares a wealth of personal stories to motivate and inspire.

“An eye-opening and common-sense approach that will help you become one of the “Ruggeds.”  This book will change your perspective and approach to success!”

John Kelly, Detroit Free Press 5-Stars

“As I have always said, and firmly believe, anyone can become an entrepreneur,” says Andrew. “However, Rugged Entrepreneurs, as I classify them, make the leap toward success in a way that separates them from everyone else. The term Rugged Entrepreneur is like Justice – it’s blind. It doesn’t know how old you are, it doesn’t know race or sex, or orientation.

It doesn’t care what your circumstances are: affluent or impoverished. Ruggers arise up out of every situation you have ever seen.”

With a mentor’s passion, Andrew lays out the “Rugged” qualities needed for building a solid foundation for any business startup, looks at market disruption and offers personal guidance to beginners as well as seasoned business veterans.

“This author is living proof that his blueprint works. Packed with sound business advice, backed by strong examples and enlightening concepts, this book is, in my opinion, essential reading for anyone who wants to succeed.”

Susan Keefe, Midwest Book Review, 5 Stars

“There are four elements that any successful entrepreneur must have or learn,” Andrew says. “Those are a fervent work ethic, a humble and healthy pride, mental toughness, and faith.” By faith, Andrew doesn’t mean religion, but instead, the absence of doubt. “Faith is deeper than belief,” Andrew says. “And it’s essential.”

Having gone from millionaire to broke twice, Andrew draws on his own personal stories of success—and failure—in the ventures that he and Daphne have undertaken over the years. The Andrews’ businesses include BoxDrop Mattress and Furniture, bioPURE, Royal Heritage Home Furnishings, Rugged American Spirits, Electric Productions, RSSCO Outlets, Sapphire Sleep, and more.

They are currently disrupting the beverage, cleaning, educational, and entertainment industries. Humble and always ready to learn, Andrew regularly seeks out advice through personal conversations with successful people, and in his book he shares the takeaways of the people he has met, like Colonel Oliver North and multi-billionaire Shahid Khan, the owner of Flex-n-Gate and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“So much wisdom in one book! The Rugged Entrepreneur is not just a great book, it’s a guide to surviving the new economy. Everyone should read this. Skip college and read this book!”

David Alan Arnold, Helicopter Cameraman Deadliest Catch, Bering Sea Gold and SURVIVOR, 5-Stars

Always putting wings under his ideas, Andrew recently partnered up with East Tennessee State University to create a new interdisciplinary skills program. Uniting businesses with university students, Rugged Buc Labs provides the hands-on experience, resume building, and networking that is lacking at most universities today and offers students in nearly every field the benefit of looking at their future career through an entrepreneurial lens.

“I’m an entrepreneur-a-holic,” says Andrew, who ties in his travel, hobbies, and fun with the business experiences he and Daphne undertake. “There are so many rewards to being an entrepreneur.”

Filled with captivating stories, solid examples, and inspiration from leaders of all genres, Andrew’s business-savvy guidebook will prepare you to take on the world.

The Rugged Entrepreneur, What Every Disruptive Business Leader Should Know, ISBN 978-1948677684 (Hardcover) $27.00, (ebook) $13.99, 2021, Forefront Books, Simon & Schuster 224 pages, available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Goodreads.

Historical Epic Entwines Past and Present in a
Man’s Search for Meaning

New York, NY – How does the past affect the present? How do the decisions our ancestors made centuries ago affect our lives now? What is our reason to be? These are all questions debut author Norman McCombs asks in his gripping historical novel A Reason to Be, a poignant tale of loss, hope, and the transcendent power of the love that binds us to one another.

A critically acclaimed White House National Medal of Technology and Innovation winner, McCombs tells the semi-autobiographical story of Douglas McCombs, an accomplished engineer and recent widower who is driven to discover the truth of who he is by studying the people and places he comes from. After losing his wife to a battle with Alzheimer’s, Douglas is left devastated until a chance encounter with a sharp, compassionate librarian named Suzy Hamilton on the steps of the New York Public Library shakes him from the throes of grief.

With Suzy’s help, Douglas takes up genealogy and begins an investigation into his Scottish lineage that takes the reader on a sprawling journey through time. As he traces his ancestry through generations, Douglas manages to discover not only the roots he was searching for but also a brand-new reason to be.

A Reason to Be is a brilliant, cerebral narrative of a man’s journey to discover who he is within the stunning breadth of history.”
Rachel Song, Author, 5-Stars

McCombs has over two hundred patents worldwide, primarily for air separation technology used for a myriad of oxygen applications around the world.

In 2011, as McCombs stood outside the East Wing of the White House before receiving the National Medal of Technology from President Obama, he asked himself a simple question: How did I come from the circumstances of my birth to the steps of the White House? That moment prompted McCombs to search for deeper connections to his ancestry. Like Douglas, these remarkable ancestors stretch back to legendary highland clan chiefs, American war generals, humble farmers, and family men.

McCombs was born in Amherst, New York, where he met his late wife, Grace. Like Douglas’ fictional wife Hope, Grace’s prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s and her eventual death led McCombs into a deep depression until a close friend aided him in receiving the help he needed. After recovering from his depression, McCombs left western New York and began to write A Reason to Be.

“A Reason to Be is an exhilarating exploration into exactly why we are here and the
never-ending journey to find and give love.”
John J. Kelly, Detroit Free Press, 5-Stars

Equal parts love story, historical epic, and journey to self-discovery, A Reason to Be resonates at the heart of what it means to be human. It inspires us to discover who we are and where we came from, joining past with the present, loss with love, and imbibes us with a brilliant hope for who we can become. As Douglas says in the novel: “We’re more than our bloodlines. We’re love lines. Love is what flows down the generations. Love is what collects and gathers in force and momentum and strength. Love.”

I am a native Arizonan who grew up all up and down the Colorado River.  My mother was a stylist and my father owned a construction company.   I used to ask my mom if she needed a shampoo boy because it was a lot easier than being in 115-degree heat.  I only won that battle half the battle-half-the time.  So I can give a great shampoo or pour your concrete slabs for you.

I moved to Phoenix as a teenager and attended high school and college there.  I started a career in sales and marketing that led me to being in international franchising and mergers.  I spent five years in Europe franchising there.

Upon my return to the states, we began franchising salons and that brought me back to my roots in the salon industry.   First, we were distributors and then we became manufacturers focusing on the fine thin, and thinning hair market.  We started on a journey in the hair restoration market that has since led to four US patents with four more pending.  We feel we the most effective topical hair growth product on the market.

BRX Pro Tip: Don’t be Average

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] Welcome back to Business RadioX Pro Tips, Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, I think it’s important that we make a commitment in this thing of ours. Don’t be average.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:15] Yeah. There’s no incentive to be average. Average is easy. Business is hard, average is easy. You should go out of your way to be exceptional in whatever it is you’re doing. And that comes with every aspect of your business. When your clients are hiring someone, they want to hire someone who is best in class. They want to hire the best people they can afford. People want exceptional people to solve difficult problems.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:45] So, just think about that in your own life, when you hire someone to do anything, like if you hired a painter, do you go, “Hey, do you know any average painters? Do you know anybody that just does an okay job?” Like, nobody wants that person. You want a great painter. And that’s the way it is and it should be in every aspect of your business. When you are exceptional at something, then you’re going to get hired more often and you are going to get referred more often.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:15] So, don’t be average. Aim higher. You know, hold yourself to a higher standard. Hold your clients to a higher standard. Expect more from yourself and your team and deliver that. And if you can do that, you’re not going to be average. You’re going to stand out, and you’re going to have an easier time getting clients, and you’re going to have an easier time of getting referred to more clients because people want to share that with others. If they find something exceptional, they’re going to tell people about it. So, be exceptional.
