For many, the end of a year ushers in a period of retrospection and reevaluation of life choices made in the previous year which leads to many making New Year’s resolutions. However, only 8% of people accomplish those resolutions.

Julie says don’t let lack of time, willpower or motivation keep you from reaching your fitness goals. Here are some tips for committing to and achieving those goals in 2020: 

  • Find accountability: Finding a partner or group that you’re scheduled to meet for a workout will give you extra motivation to show up. 
  • Schedule it: It’s harder to make excuses when you’ve scheduled in time for your healthy habits. 
  • Switch up your routine: Often we get comfortable with a preferred workout and then when we stop due to weather or stress, we don’t pick up something new that can accommodate our new circumstances.

Stone Payton: [00:00:02] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton, Lee Kantor here with you. Two very important disciplines in this thing of ours, Lee. Track and tweak.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:11] Yeah. With so much information at our disposal nowadays, it’s important to really pay attention to the data, analyze, and tweak the activities that you’re doing that aren’t getting you the outcome that you desire. So, be mindful of the things you’re doing. Do some sort of journaling, do some sort of kind of a checklist thing of what you’re trying to accomplish, and make note of what’s working and what’s not, so you can eliminate what’s not.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:38] And you have to always be kind of holding yourself accountable to the activities that you’re doing every day. And just because you have a routine that, every day, you’re doing these five things, you should check to make sure those five things are doing what they’re supposed to do and they’re accomplishing your goals. Because if your goals aren’t getting accomplished, month-after-month, then you’re going to have to make a change. And the best way to know what to change is to figure out what’s not working.

Stone Payton: [00:01:03] And, sometimes, this kind of thing can sneak up on you, right? Because something you’ve been doing for, I don’t know, two, three, four, five years and it’s always worked pretty well and you kind of sort of fall into that habit. And it just doesn’t produce the same results, the same caliber results that you used to get. So, it’s an important discipline to be objective and genuinely track. And then, don’t be bashful about tweaking. You know, that next step may be a little bit rough, but you got to track that, too. So, it’s an ongoing thing. Track and tweak, and track and tweak, and track and tweak.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:34] And then, I’d add a third thing, is to experiment. So, try new things periodically just to see if they work. But wall them off so that if they don’t work, you can get rid of them quickly.

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor, Stone Payton here with you. Lee, the lifeblood of this business are effective show concept strategy sessions. Often, we call them show concept meetings. But, you know, there’s a lot of value that is transferred in those exchanges. Should I charge for conducting the show concept meeting?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:24] I think it’s a great question. I think everybody’s got to make this decision for themselves. We don’t charge right now. I’m definitely contemplating charging forward or at least putting a price on it. Whether we discount that price if they sign or charge a nominal fee, I think that there is value in charging. I think there’s definitely value in putting a price on it. That’s for sure. And then, remember, other experts and consultants charge for discovery.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:53] If you are going to talk to a consultant about your business, they’re going to have a discovery meeting with you. Sometimes, few hours where they’re gonna charge you. And, you know, the CPA is going to charge you. A lawyer is going to charge you for discovery to learn about what the problem is, to learn to see the best solution. So, it isn’t kind of an insane concept for us to be charging for this. And that whiteboard document that we produced during that meeting is valuable.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:21] Whether they use you or not, that’s good information for them to think about their business and who the important relationships are for them and where they are, in naming them, in getting the businesses down, the associations at 360 view of all their relationships, that’s an important activity that they probably haven’t done before or hadn’t done in a while. So, just going through that has tremendous value. So, it is definitely worth something. And when there’s a price associated with it, then it really locks into your customer the value that you’re providing.

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor, Stone Payton here with you. Lee, you are fond of saying never forget expertise, not service.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:12] Absolutely. I think that this is one of the traps that we run into sometimes, is we get bogged down into the delivering of the work that we do in terms of recording a show, hosting a show, you’re doing a show. And we kind of lose sight of the fact that these people are hiring our prospects and our clients or hiring us to solve a relationship problem. And the way that we do that is through the media and through doing shows and things like that.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:40] So, it’s important that we are always on point in terms of doing that kind of consulting and leading the engagement, and not getting kind of bogged down with the customers, kind of some of their thoughts about how we do what we do. We are experts in what we do. We are experts in using the media to build relationships. And they’re hiring us for those insights and connections, not just to press record and to make sure the intro sounds good. All of that stuff is a means to an end. But remember, at the end of the day, they’re hiring us to help them build relationships with the people that matter most to them.

Sean Kevelighan joined the I.I.I.  (Insurance Information Institute) as its Chief Executive Officer in 2016.  Previously, he was Group Head of Public Affairs for Zurich Insurance Group where he oversaw Government and Industry Affairs as well as Corporate Responsibility.  He joined Zurich in 2013 as Head of Government and Industry Affairs for North America. Prior to that, he worked at Citigroup, Inc., as Head of Strategic Communications for its Global Consumer Banking business, and for Zurich, as Head of Group Media Relations in North America. During President George W. Bush’s administration, he served first in the U.S. Department of the Treasury as a spokesperson for economic issues, and eventually became Senior Advisor for the Office of Tax Policy. He was also the Press Secretary for the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
