BRX Pro Tip: Anticipating and Addressing Objections Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:02] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton, Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, it’s not every time that we have a show concept strategy session that people immediately say, “Where you been all my life? Where do I sign? How do we get started?” Sometimes, there are questions. Sometimes, there are objections. What counsel, if any, do we have to offer in terms of anticipating and addressing some objections that we may come across?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:28] Well, a key element to objections is not to get defensive about it. And you want to just address all of the objections very matter of factly. You’ve heard it before. You’re not afraid of it. You have an answer for it. And just call them out on it to say this is the answer. Don’t duck any question whether it comes to money, whether it comes to competition, whether it comes from whatever, it doesn’t matter.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:55] Don’t duck it, just a matter of factly address it. And a lot of times, it’s a good idea to just call their bluff and say, “You know what, you mentioned that competitor. You should really consider working with that competitor. You know, maybe where you’re at today, that’s a better fit”, you know. So, don’t duck anything, just deal with it straight on. I mean, you’re the king of this stuff.

Stone Payton: [00:01:17] Well, I don’t know about that, but I have been exposed to what I think are some pretty powerful and productive sales mechanics, if you will. And one of the disciplines that I would recommend is when you do get an objection, whether it be around any of that stuff, time, energy, money, my recommendation would be to isolate and verify the concern. Meaning, make sure that it is a real concern and not just a smoke screen.

Stone Payton: [00:01:40] And the best tool for that that I know of is to just take it away and say, “Well, if you weren’t concerned about the price, then would you consider doing this?” or “If you weren’t concerned about and able surgery-” And what you’ll find is if it is a genuine concern. They’ll say, “Oh, yeah, man, if it weren’t for that, I’d be all over it.” But if it’s really more of a smoke screen, they’ll kind of hedge and say, “Well, yeah, there’s that,” and blah, blah, blah.

Stone Payton: [00:02:03] And then, at least, you don’t waste time and energy chasing down a concern or an objection that doesn’t really exist. So, you might try that out sometime just to kind of streamline the process and keep everyone honest in the conversation, just kind of keep that follow-up question in your back pocket if you weren’t concerned. But I like your advice, too, what you said. Man, just don’t be defensive about it. Just address the concern. And maybe one way to address it is we’re not the best fit. You know, be willing to explore that, too.

Ted Bradford, a community builder and urbanist at heart and through practice, moved to Atlanta in 2005 and got his Masters in Urban Policy Studies from Georgia State University. His experience in real estate brokerage and development, as well as his role as the former Chief of Staff to Councilmember Natalyn Archibong, led to his wealth of knowledge on the ins and outs of city life and the political, market and social forces that shape it.

Bradford created Real City, his commercial real estate development and consulting company, in order to put these principles into practice, to create the change that he wanted to see in the world around him and help others navigate the change in their own lives and businesses. Bradford says the company was primarily created to celebrate Atlanta and what makes the city remarkable.

Bradford also serves as Partner and Director of Operations at Constellations, a civic and social shared workspace founded by Gene Kansas of Gene Kansas | Commercial Real Estate, which recently received the Award of Excellence for Adaptive Use from Atlanta Urban Design Commission’s 2019 Design Awards. Bradford’s role at Constellations provides a hands-on opportunity to work with some of the city’s most relevant “movers and shakers,” in the heart of the historic Sweet Auburn district. Applying passion and expertise, Bradford is helping Atlanta realize its promise as a leading global city for the 21st century.

Skylar Security is emerging as an innovative leader in the industry of privately-owned security companies by offering the next generation of services to customers in metro Atlanta and throughout the United States.

The reason for the firm’s success is its founder, Jamine Moton. She created a company that exceeds all aspects of industry expectations and has a mission to never become the problems it is called to solve. Skylar’s core belief is: Security is an emotion. Everyone deserves to be safe.

Its goal is to change how privately-owned security company customers are engaged and represented while simultaneously disrupting the culture of how officers are managed and recruited to protect those clients. Moton factors in each clients’ brand when matching them with Skylar personnel. As a result, Skylar has never lost a customer and has a 2% staff turnover rate. The company’s roster has grown from 30 to 450 guards, since being founded in 2015. Skylar also now operates in four states.

Moton’s approach to privately-owned security services has garnered her an unprecedented level of industry success. In 2019, she earned the Golden Ticket in the Atlanta-based WEI pitch competition. That sent her to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in The Hague, Netherlands where she represented the City of Atlanta and business start-ups in the United States.

Moton has demonstrated the ability to focus on success as a former professional athlete, police officer and Olympic team member. She holds a master’s degree from Clemson University and is a graduate of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, Atlanta- based Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative and LaunchPad 2X.

About Your Host

Jane McCracken returns to ATDC as a Startup Catalyst, having started her career here many years ago. She then moved into venture capital and investment banking both in the United States and Europe before joining an early-stage, medical diagnostics company as chief financial officer.  During her time there, she raised $60 million and completed eight international acquisitions. The company was listed on both the London and Oslo stock exchanges.

Jane then worked with two venture-backed companies.  She joined the founders of an online travel company as CEO, and took it from startup to the world’s second-largest hotel booking site before Travelocity acquired it. At the request of her venture investors, Jane then joined a computer games developer as CEO and turned around the faltering enterprise before it was sold to a NASDAQ-listed games company.

Most recently, Jane was CEO of an oncology-focused clinical research company, which grew from startup to a multinational firm with $15 million in annual revenue and offices across Europe and the United States.  The company was financed through its own cash flow and was sold in early 2012 to a larger clinical research organization.

Jane continues to work with fast growing companies — in interim and full-time positions — as a consultant, board member, and angel investor. In addition, Jane has served on boards for public and private companies, as well as government-related and non-profit organizations. She is a frequent speaker and panelist at conferences, companies, and universities and is an active volunteer in her community. Jane obtained her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and her master’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

BRX Pro Tip: Asking for Help Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with Business RadioX Pro Tips. Stone Payton, Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, a discipline of all top performers, they are willing to ask for help. Let’s talk about that discipline in the context of this thing of ours.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:19] Yeah. This is one of the really big benefits of being affiliated with Business RadioX and being a studio partner, you have access to an incredible network of people that are doing the actual activity that a lot of people dream of doing. They’re being successful doing radio and podcasting in a world where most of the people that are involved in that industry are struggling. So, you have access to people that all they do is think about ways to serve clients, to serve their community, and make money in this platform.

Stone Payton: [00:00:49] So, we are available to help at any time. Email, phone, mail, any way you want to get information from us, please ask us. We’re trying to deliver as much thought leadership and content around this topic as possible. And guess what? All of your guests in the markets that you serve are also available to you. They’ll happily take your call and you can ask them for advice when you have specific challenges that are happening in your studio, in your business.

Stone Payton: [00:01:17] I know there’s been many times when we had a question, a legal question, a PR question, a marketing question, and somebody was in the studio and we sat down with them. We’re like, “Hey, how would you handle this? How would you help somebody get through this thing?” And they’re happy to help you. There is help available because you’re affiliated with Business RadioX that it would be difficult for other people to kind of have the same access to the same level of expertise that you do that’s at your disposal. So, if you are having a challenge or you’re having a problem, you don’t have to struggle. There’s people there that want to help that are available to help, all you have to do is ask.

Stone Payton: [00:01:53] Well, I got to say, second, perhaps, only to providing a meaningful interview for a guest, one of the best ways in the world to make a friend, ask for help.

Lee Kantor: [00:02:04] Amen.
