2019 marks the 20th anniversary of Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona, a non-profit founded by local Subway franchisees and partners to help at-risk kids in this community gain access to sports, sporting equipment, sporting programs and wellness who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Subway Kids & Sports is unique in that it is 100% locally funded and run via an all-volunteer board. It is, to our knowledge, the only formal Subway-related nonprofit in the country.

Since 1999, the all-volunteer team has focused on a singular goal: to help provide sports equipment, uniforms, registration fees and access to major sporting events to kids who might not otherwise be able to participate. Subway Restaurants of Arizona and their Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona team members support kids in sports because they all believe basic sports skills—teamwork, commitment and accountability—help kids throughout their lives. To date, their work has touched more than 60,000 Arizona kids.

Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona provides assistance to Arizona kids in two ways:

The first is through their Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona Grant program. Each year, they raise funds to donate to amazing nonprofits that are helping kids gain access to health, wellness and sports. They’ve given more than $1 million since our inception!

The second is through the Cycle for Success program. Through this program, local teachers are asked to nominate students performing good deeds both inside and outside of the classroom. Each month, Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona and The Be Kind People Project – in partnership with Dasani, Subway Restaurants of Arizona and Shamrock Farms – ride into several of the classrooms and surprise committee-chosen students with bikes, helmets and locks, as well as Subway lunches for the entire class. The Cycle for Success program has been operating for more than a decade and focuses on increasing children’s self-esteem, encouraging the community to become involved in the lives of at-risk children and promoting random acts of kindness in local schools. Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona and The Be Kind People Project advocate for the health and safety of children, recognize random acts of kindness that may otherwise go unnoticed, and encourage community involvement in the lives of at-risk youth.

Justin is originally from the Seattle, WA area where his parents have had a window cleaning business for 15 years.

Greathouse-Home-Services-CandaceCandice Greathouse is a mother, home school teacher and business owner. Candice went into business with her husband, Justin to help with the administrative side and to bring heart to the business.

She cares deeply about everyone of their customers and continues to bend over backwards to make sure that they know they are appreciated.  Candice is originally from Summerville, SC, where her dad owned and operated a painting company.

Justin and Candice currently live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and are the parents of two little girls ages 6 and 2.

Carl-Ware

Carl Ware is an American success story. Born in 1943 to humble Georgia sharecroppers, he faced hardship while growing up black in the Jim Crow South. His father made history as the first black man to vote in Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District since Reconstruction.

Ware worked his way through college, taking part in the Atlanta Student Movement. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he rose to become one of the most influential business leaders and philanthropists of his generation. Ware was elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1973 and later served as its first black president from 1976 to 1979. In 1979 he was named vice president of Special Markets for Coca-Cola USA.

He founded the Coca-Cola Foundation and became known as the company’s “Daring Diplomat.” As the highest-ranking African American executive at the Coca-Cola Company, Ware would become the architect of his employer’s South Africa disinvestment and the first American businessman to meet with Nelson Mandela after his release from prison in 1990. During this time, Ware proved instrumental in the fall of South Africa’s brutal system of apartheid.

In 1991 he was appointed deputy group president of Coca-Cola’s Northeast Europe Africa group. In 1993 he became the company’s first black group president, heading the Africa operations. Retiring from Coca-Cola in 2003 as head of global public affairs and administration, Ware served on the boards of Georgia Power, National Life of Vermont, Cummins, Chevron, and PGA Tour Golf Course Properties, as well as the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and as chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

Nermin Jasani is managing partner at Highland Oak Group, a business growth consultancy based in Atlanta Georgia and works with business owners who specifically want to grow by increasing their revenue, expanding locations or selling the business.

Her expertise is in growth and the challenges businesses face when growing. She is a former Wall Street attorney, tech start up founder, and manufacturing COO. She’s worked with hundreds of business owners in a spectrum of categories including lawyers, plastic surgeons, restaurants, construction and manufacturing plants.

White Plains, Georgia native Dr. Crystal A. Champion, PT, DPT, CLT-ALM, Cert. DN, is a Physical Therapist and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. She has 12 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Upon graduating from Greene-Taliaferro Comprehensive High School in Greensboro, Georgia in 2000 as Valedictorian, Dr. Champion attended Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia where she graduated Cum Laude and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Education with a Concentration in Exercise Science in 2004. She was also initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc in which she remains an active member in the Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Dr. Champion attended the Medical College of Georgia where she obtained a Master of Physical Therapy degree in 2006 and a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree in 2008.

Dr. Champion has served on various committees to include the Cancer Committee, Oncology Continuous Quality Improvement Team, Unit Practice Council, and the Palliative Care Team. She has also served as a host committee member for an Atlanta signature fundraiser, Jeffrey Fashion Cares, which supports Susan G. Komen Atlanta and the Atlanta AIDS Fund. In her career, she has received accolades to include the Innovators Award for Quality/Patient Safety, a Clinical Excellence Award, and was nominated for the American Health Council Best In Patient Care Award. She is also an American Physical Therapy Association Credentialed Clinical Instructor in which she facilitates clinical experiences for students in Doctor of Physical Therapy programs.

Dr. Champion has a special interest in oncology rehabilitation and was instrumental in developing the oncology rehabilitation program as well as the outpatient lymphedema treatment program for a major hospital system in Atlanta, Georgia. She obtained her certification as a Lymphedema Therapist from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies and most recently became certified in Advanced Lymphedema Management. She is also certified in Dry Needling through the Spinal Manipulation Institute. She has lectured to breast surgery fellows at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory and participates in various community events to spread awareness about cancer survivorship.

Dr. Champion has had family and friends that have been affected by cancer and have endured horrible side-effects, leading to decline in physical functioning and a poor quality of life. Her passion for providing quality care for patients who require cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema therapy led her to start her own practice, Eminence Physical Therapy, LLC. Also, in her experience as a healthcare practitioner, she saw the need to serve cancer patients on a larger scale and encourage patients take a more holistic approach to restoring their psychological well-being, physical functioning, and quality of life as often the physical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional impairments resulting from cancer treatment are often not addressed or are improperly addressed.

This led her to establish Champions Can! Foundation for Cancer Wellness, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes and advocates for cancer survivorship. She is also a published author of the book “The Elements of Cancer Survivorship: A Guide to Navigating the Journey” which is available on Amazon and aims to guide individuals and their families through their cancer journey. Dr. Champion has gained more awareness surrounding the gaps in education regarding lymphedema treatment, cancer rehabilitation, as well as the limited focus on cancer survivorship once cancer treatment has been completed. Her company strives to be the leader in providing high quality care for lymphedema treatment as well as for cancer rehabilitation.

Karen has served as a board member or advisory board member of a variety of civic and nonprofit organizations including the Unemployment Services Trust; National Nonprofit Risk Management Center; and The Foundation Center–Atlanta. Karen has received the Martin Luther King Leadership award and the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta’s Community Leader Award. She is a member of the 2000 class of Leadership Atlanta and 2003 Coca-Cola Diversity Leadership Academy,and a graduate of Agnes Scott College.

Laurie Rein has been on the board of IFA for 3 years with one year serving as Vice President. She has a degree in Dance and Theater from the University of Arizona and has performed in several theaters in Tucson including The Unscrewed Theater, The Roadrunner Theater, and the Gaslight Theater. Laurie is an avid lover of films and enjoys working with other film buffs in Tucson through IFA. Anne Dalton – Board Member 

Anne is co-chair of the IFA Documentary Workgroup and an Actor. She has produced several short documentaries and her current production deals with on ground-breaking treatment to reverse Alzheimer’s disease. 


Michael Grigsby 

Michael Grigsby, as the Production Accountant for Feature Films and Cable Television Series for Studios and Independent Productions, was responsible for the budgeting and financial reporting to Producers, Financiers, Bond Companies, and Studios.  

For over 28 years, sixty productions were completed in locations in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America. Projects ranged from small movies of the week in California to first-run features of $60-70M. As the Department Head he managed teams from 2 or 3 for small projects, and up to 9 Accounting Assistants for large ones.  

He has completed over 125 independent budgets for Pilots, TV series, and Features from $2M to $200M, and continues to be consulted by Producers for budgeting on future projects, both nationally and internationally. Prior to his career in the Film Business, he was a Computer Programmer/Analyst in the early days of the High-Tech business world.  

Recently retired from active location work in Film, Michael is participating in community and social activities in Tucson, and Arizona. This includes returning to actively playing bass, both acoustic double bass for jazz, and electric bass for funk, blues and fusion in the local and thriving music scene.

I am an Anthropology major at the University of Arizona where I am taking film and journalism classes after many years playing in rock bands and then working in real estate development.

People who live in rural or suburban communities have been hearing it for a long time: The next big technology is almost here to solve their internet problems for good. Whether it’s “big cable” or 5G, that fast, modern connection you’ve always wanted is just around the corner. The infrastructure used by ground-based internet service providers is a huge investment, one that most companies pay for by having a lot of customers in a relatively small area – that is, a city.  

However, if you don’t live in town, you’ll find yourself paying more or getting less quality when you sign up for ground-based internet service. In some cases, you might even have to pay the ISP thousands of dollars to dig trenches to run a cable to your home.

Steve Mesnick of Viasat is here to tell us how consumers can stay online all the time between school, work, and personal interests through high-quality satellite-based internet that can connect homes even in the hardest-to-reach locations. 

Did you know? 

  • Some 5 million American households with school-aged children don’t have high-speed internet at home, with 96.5 percent of students reporting that they are expected to go online to finish their homework assignments. 
  • Satellite internet has less equipment on the ground compared to terrestrial internet providers, so the network is less likely to sustain damage during extreme weather, roadwork, and other emergencies. 
  • There’s a myth that satellite internet is very expensive. However, when compared to mobile hotspots and other connectivity options for people who live outside of major urban areas, satellite internet often delivers a better bargain per gig.

One of the best, I think, is utilizing a strategic guest co-host to help grow your show. Talk about that a little bit.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:19] Sure. A lot of times, people don’t—you might have a friend that’s kind of the mega networker or the person that’s kind of go-to person in a specific industry, and that they don’t want to have their own show. Maybe they travel a lot, maybe they have other things going on, and they can’t commit to having their own show. So, they’re not really a prospect to host their own show. But they may be the perfect kind of guest co-host, where they can come in, and they can bring some people with them in their industry, and they can kind of tee you up, so that you can do what you do and sell them a show.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:55] This is at the heart of what happened with me when I started the business. I had Amy Otto as my guest co-host. She was a networker. She loved going to chamber meetings, and schmoozing people, and meeting them face to face, and being that person out in the community. I hated doing that. So, the arrangement was in exchange for her being the co-host of the show, she would go out, schmooze the people, invite them to be the guest. I would produce a show, publish the show, co-hosts the show. And she didn’t have to do any of that. She just did her part. I did my part. And together, she grew her business, and I grew my business. So, it was a very symbiotic relationship.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:36] These people you don’t have to commit to. They’re the guest co-host forever. You can let them come in periodically. You can have several of them. I know some of our studio partners have strategic guest co-hosts to come in to fill in when they need somebody to fill in and, also, to help tee up a sales opportunity. So, think about the people in your network that might be a good way to kind of bring them into the family and give them a taste of this to see if they can help.
