Solution Road and Mosaic

This week marked the beginning of a bi-weekly series we’ll be hosting with Dr. Gilles LaMarche, VP of Professional Relations at Life University where we’ll be focusing on integrity in the business community and personal life.  This series will be leading into the Life Talks World Congress event coming up May 12-13, 2016.

Life Talks is about empowering leaders to create social change, make a transformational impact on the world and remove the interference to maximize their perfection within.  The event includes thought leadersin business and productivity, physical health, nutrition, compassion, forgiveness, vitalism, quantum healing, and more.

We will be featuring business leaders who are known to value integrity in their professional and personal lives, and we will introduce several high school students from the community who have also been recognized for exemplifying the trait in their personal and academic endeavors.

We were joined in studio by Sarah Smith and Stu Sheldon, of Solution Road and Mosaic, respectively.  Sarah has spent numerous years helping non-profit and for-profit organizations raise funding and public awareness for their respective work.  She draws on experience from healthcare as well as media and is very selective in the clients she and her team take on at Solution Road.

Stu is an expert in experiential marketing, in which brands look to engage a targeted subset of their customer base.  Their goal is to create an immersive experience that has a measure of exclusivity and hands-on interaction with elements of the brand.  In this way, the client company is able to leverage Earned Media to get people talking about their experience.  I first met Stu on the Midtown Business show talking about Escalate, the experiential marketing company that was recently acquired by Mosaic.

Sharing Spaces Program

On this week’s episode we focused on how the Cobb-Douglas Department of Public Health is working to reduce rates of childhood obesity.  The Sharing Spaces program and Power Up for 30 program both aim to facilitate more physical activity among our student-aged populations.

Childhood obesity is rising among our young people at alarming rates.  The American Heart Association’s website explains: “Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children  today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. There are also psychological effects: Obese children are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression. And excess weight at young ages has been linked to higher and earlier death rates in adulthood.”

On this week’s episode we focused on two more programs that are part of the Cobb 2020 initiative. Created and implemented by the Cobb Douglas Department of Public Health under the direction of Dr. Jack Kennedy, aims to address a number of public health concerns that erode level of health and quality of life for many of the over 850,000 resident who live there.
One key area of focus is childhood obesity among student aged  residents of Cobb and Douglas Counties.  Among the 29 public health programs that make up the Cobb2020 initiative are the Power Up for 30 and the Sharing Spaces programs.  These are programs focused on getting young students moving more throughout their school day and beyond.
I sat down with District Director for Chronic Disease and Injury, Wende Parker, and Mark Anderson, Supervisor for Health and Phys Ed for the Cobb Co School District to learn more about how these programs work and the resources they’re hoping to identify in the community.
The sharing spaces program seeks to partner with community organizations that have playgrounds, gyms, tracks, and trails, giving area residents access to these resources, particularly young people.
In this way, the community will see declines in rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and others, and students enjoy academic performance upticks to boot.

Brett Davis explains distributed antenna systems

P Marshall and Associates

On this week’s episode I featured long-time acquaintance, Carrie Dimino, and Brett Davis, of P Marshall and Associates, an Atlanta-based engineering firm.  The company initially started with a focus in telecommunications, providing services around antenna systems and other telecom needs.

As their relationships with their clients grew, their happy customers were frequently asking if the firm could provide engineering support for needs in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and others, prompting P Marshall and Associates to expand their repertoire to include experts in these areas as well.

With Atlanta currently placing focus and energy on becoming a Smart City, and many builders and commercial property owners looking to integrate technology into their buildings, the firm is uniquely positioned to play a key role in helping to achieve these goals.

Brett explained how PM&A is able to design and install distributed antenna systems that integrate with existing structures and architecture as well as new construction.  So, they’re able to make a cellular antenna that becomes part of a light pole, for example, but is essentially unnoticeable.

We also talked about how the company places great attention to the culture of the company.  They have purposefully maintained a low-key, fun work environment to maximize employee satisfaction and creativity.  Carrie shared some of the characteristics the firm is looking for in engineering experts who are looking to join their growing, innovative company.

John Oxendine talks insurance reimbursement.

Insurance Reimbursement

This week’s show was part of our monthly series with MAG and we focused our conversation on legal issues around commercial insurance reimbursement for physicians.  Former insurance commissioner for the state of GA, attorney, and expert on the subject, John Oxendine, joined me in the studio to talk about some important things physicians need to know relating to commercial insurance reimbursement.
There are laws that lay out requirements for timeliness of payment and/or communications regarding submitted claims that must be adhered to by insurance companies.  Additionally, there are also rules around documentation of assignment of representation that can be the difference between losing five or six figures to insurance company claw back or being able to deny those requests to return payment for previously-delivered care.
John Oxendine is uniquely qualified to provide advice and information to physicians on the subject of health insurance reimbursement.  He spent over 15 years as Georgia’s State Insurance Commissioner.  He has worked closely with MAG, the Georgia Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage, AMA, and numerous other health care provider organizations.
While Insurance Commissioner, John created a division at the Department of Insurance to help physicians with claims payment issues.  Additionally, he was the first commissioner in the country to levy large fines against insurance companies not in compliance with the state’s prompt pay law.

Workman’s Compensation

This week I sat down with attorney and workman’s compensation expert, Jennifer Smith, of Ken David & Associates to talk about important considerations employers should  think about to reduce their risk.  Workman’s compensation can present a real financial exposure for any company.  So, it’s vital that company leadership take steps in advance to handle employee injuries effectively when they occur.

Jennifer shared numerous tips that employers should be mindful of relating to the new hire process, to educate incoming employees about options for care should injuries occur.  We also discussed how managers and employers should handle employee complaints that could possibly related to work place stressors or injuries.  A major element of this is documentation about details of conversations about physical complaints or over injuries.

We talked about ways employers and managers should handle communications with employees and care team when an injury has occurred and employees are out of work or placed on limited work duties that can hasten employees returning to work, as well as decreasing likelihood of litigation.

The Small Business Expo is the largest multi-city expo of its kind.  I spoke with founder, Zach Lezberg about his inspiration for starting the event and how its grown to be so large.  I caught up with Zach leading into the 12/10 Atlanta show at the Atlanta Convention Center.

The free-to-the-public event featured over 100 exhibitors and offered numerous break out sessions and learning presentations, along with access to business experts for an opportunity to get questions answered.

The pro-business expo will be coming to 14 cities in 2016 and is so effective for fostering business relationships, several exhibitors travel to most or even all the event locations throughout the year.

AirWatch by VM Ware

On this week’s episode we sat down with Aamir Siddiqi, the Executive Director for Enterprise Sales, Healthcare, for AirWatch by VM Ware.  AirWatch is known as an industry leader and innovator in the mobile enterprise security and services space.

The rise and evolution of mobile devices as business tools has been both a boon and a bane for enterprises.  While on one hand, they serve as efficient tools that facilitate work flow, collaboration, and productivity, they also create significant security risks for the business.

When you add the additional layer of sensitivity and compliance requirements for handling patient health information, this risk is of high importance to address in the healthcare arena.

With their well-known expertise in mobile security coupled with their recent acquisition by VM Ware, AirWatch plays a large role in helping healthcare organizations, both acute and sub-acute, take advantage of mobile tech’s efficiencies while protecting data across all devices on the network.

Bowlfreak

This week I had the opportunity to sit down with long-time friend of mine, Michael Powell, founder of Bowlfreak.  Bowlfreak is a web-based app that allows bowlers who participate in USBC-sanctioned leagues simultaneously compete in bracket-style tournaments via the app with opponents they’re matched with based on their sanctioned handicaps.

Most leagues and even professional bowling tournaments will have bracket tournaments going on within the main event.  The Bowlfreak app creates very large bracket tournaments against similarly-skilled players, providing for potentially very large prize awards for winning/placing in competitions.

Michael shared how the idea for the app was born out of a conversation with a local league manager who opined that there ought to be an app for bowlers.  Given Powell’s previous work as a web designer and creator of numerous mobile apps, he and his colleagues readily possessed the know-how.

The Bowlfreak team is preparing to launch the app to the public for use within the next few weeks.  And, it is entirely possible that with the ability to significantly increase the ability to win sizable prize awards, along with a competitively-level playing field, will help increase interest in participating in USBC-sanctioned leagues.

Health Insurance Mergers

On this week’s episode I continued my monthly series with Medical Association of Georgia. MAG CEO, Donald Palmisano, Jr., and MAG delegate from Bibb County, Dr. John Rogers joined me in studio to talk about the challenges and concerns arising from recently-proposed mergers between large health insurance companies that will significantly reduce amount of competition in the space for Georgians to choose from.

Aetna/Humana and Anthem/Cigna are in the process of merging. At the same time, health insurers are offering insurance policies to the public that do not have adequate coverage resulting in more out of network charges by physicians.

Aetna/Humana and Wellpoint/Cigna have proposed mergers in the health insurance market. If these inadequate policies are being offered in the current environment, MAG is concerned about how patients will be negatively impacted with a further narrowing of the networks and increased physician reliance on out of network charges.

MAG recently sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice to call for it to scrutinize the mergers for antitrust violations.

MAG believes the mergers would reduce competition and place physicians and their patients at an even greater disadvantage as a shrinking number of health insurance companies gain increasingly-dominant positions in the marketplace.

The new Aetna (58 percent) and Anthem (30 percent) entities would control nearly 90 percent of the individual market in Georgia. In the small group market, Aetna would control more than 49 percent, while Anthem would control more than 33 percent. Each new company would control about 26 percent of the Medicare Title XVIII marketplace. And for large group market, Aetna would control more than 12 percent while Anthem would control nearly 55 percent.

Physicians have little-to-no leverage to negotiate contract terms with these multi-billion dollar conglomerates – which are imposing take-it-or-leave it agreements and unilateral, mid-term amendments with growing impunity.

Gone unchecked, a few insurers will be in a position to manipulate the marketplace to institute policies that will exacerbate the physician shortage and undermine the economic viability of the practice environment in the state and limit the accessibility of care and individual patient choice.

Georgia Department of Insurance has expressed concerns that the Aetna/Humana merger would violate Georgia’s standards for competition. Specifically, DOI has shared that the Aetna/Humana merger may violate Georgia’s competitive standard in the individual, small group, and Medicare Title XVIII markets while raising concerns of substantially reduced competition in the large group market.

More than 30 percent of the physicians in Georgia who participated in a survey that MAG conducted in the last several months said that they believe that the Aetna/Humana merger would threaten the long-term viability of their practice.

Kevy

I was joined in studio by friend of the show, Bo Wilkins, of SoundRiver Advisors, and Brooke Beach, Co-founder and CEO of Kevy.  I was introduced to Brooke by Bill Plunk, of CimCo Commercial Collections.  After spending several years as a marketing expert, Brooke and some colleagues identified an opportunity to improve on the ecommerce/direct marketing space.

To date, most email automation solutions such as Pardot, SalesForce, and others, focused on the B2B sector, helping businesses increase contact and ultimately, sales, with companies they’re trying to reach.  And, while there have been marketing automation solutions available for B2C/Retail enterprises to similarly leverage email to contact customers to enhance sales, these solutions have traditionally offered limited data that would let that enterprise truly evaluate ROI on a per email basis in dollars and cents.

The Kevy platform integrates with their clients’ existing ecommerce platform via java script that is embedded into the website code.  Once there, it enables Kevy and the customer to track user behavior by where they go on the site, how long they stay, the products and types of products they’re viewing, and whether they buy.  With this information, the retailer is able to display very behaviorally-relevant pop-up information that personalizes the experience and significantly increases conversion rates.

Additionally, the Kevy platform enables very user-specific automated email communications that are relevant to that user’s particular behavioral context.  Combining these technologies results in a dramatic rise in sales from existing customers in the retailer’s database and the ability to get very targeted with discounts and marketing message.  If you are interested in learning more, contact Brooke and her team here.
