MedTech Innovation

We sit down with Tif Wilson of Global Center for Medical Innovation, Jason Rupp, of Southeastern Medical Device Association, and Kelley Bennett of T3 Labs to talk about SEMDA’s recent conference and the state of medtech innovation here in Atlanta and the Southeast.

GCMI – The Global Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI) brings together core members of the medical device community, including universities, research centers, clinicians, established device companies, investors and startups, with the goal of accelerating the commercialization of innovative medical technology.

GCMI is an independent, not-for- profit, full-service product development organization — the first and only one of its kind in the Southeast. Launched in April 2012, the Center helps new-product teams enhance their product development, shorten time to market, and potentially achieve significant cost savings throughout the process. This collaborative environment makes everyone’s efforts more efficient and cost-effective.

The Center is located in Midtown Atlanta near Georgia Tech, T3 Labs, and Emory Midtown Hospital, an area thriving with technological innovation and entrepreneurship. It provides easy access to the city, the Southeast and — with the world’s busiest airport only 30 minutes away — the nation and the world.

SEMDA – Created in 2004, the Southeastern Medical Device Association provides unique educational resources to accelerate device development and achieve commercial success with access to funding, education, and networking opportunities for medical device companies, inventors, physicians, investors, tech transfer offices, universities, sponsors, and service providers interested in growing the medical device industry in the Southeast.

In May 2016, the organization held its 10 th annual conference in Nashville, and also launched MedTech Women @ SEMDA, whose vision is to serve as a strong advisory network for mentoring and professional development for female professionals and innovators across the medical technology industry in the Southeast. We want to see more women positioned for executive leadership in the industry and involved in the entrepreneurial process.

T3 Labs – Translational Testing and Training Laboratories, Inc. (T3 Labs) is a preclinical contract research organization (CRO) in Atlanta, Georgia. Medical devices and pharmaceuticals follow well-established paths to make sure that they are safe and effective when they reach the public. This path includes preclinical testing to determine if a product is effective and safe, and bioskills training which allows physicians and other end-users to evaluate or practice in clinical-grade environment.

With 15 years of experience, our mission remains – to provide high-value preclinical testing and training services to medical device, biologics, and pharmaceutical developers and manufacturers. We work with industry and academic sponsors to improve patient care by more effectively and efficiently developing and commercializing their devices and products.

RedTeam Security

I speak with founder of RedTeam Security, Jeremiah Talamantes on this week’s Midtown Business Radio show.  They’re the enterprise security company whose video showing them breaking into a power plant generated quite a buzz on the internet.  The firm utilizes Red Team tactics, social engineering, and penetration testing to identify security weaknesses for a business to enable them to address them and protect sensitive information, proprietary technology, and systems.

Sweat Block

As someone who has experienced hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) I understand how this problem can begin to erode your quality of life.  When you find yourself sweating for no good reason and it’s showing through your clothes it is distracting and embarrassing and it starts to invade your moment to moment conscious thought.  I had been looking for a solution to this problem when I came across a product called Sweat Block.

There were numerous reviews and video testimonials on YouTube that proclaimed their amazement with how effective it was at controlling their sweating.  I decided to give it a try and I, too, was impressed by how well it worked.  I was interested to learn more about the company so I called the Sweat Block corporate office in UT and spoke with CEO, Chas Purles.

He shared his story of how he would occasionally experience situational hyperhidrosis and how he happened to meet the founders of the company and ultimately purchased the business having seen how well it worked.

Zyrobotics

We host Dr. Johnetta Maccalla, CEO of Zyrobotics, an assistive technology company that was conceived in the summer of 2012 and officially incorporated in 2013 as a Georgia Tech Venturelab spin-off company. Their mission is to create accessible technologies that engage and empower children with disabilities and enhance their quality of life.

The technology company develops personalized technologies that are adaptive to each individual’s capabilities.  Zyrobotics first product offerings include accessible interfaces and smart toys, socially assistive robots, and a suite of educational apps that are specially designed to enable educational and accessible play. The company’s mission facilitates freedom through technology for children of all abilities.

Johnetta shared how she saw an opportunity to leverage her long background in research and development and robotics for several large, well-known enterprises to help children with disabilities.  Zyrobotics is now engaging with professionals in rehabilitation facilities to make them aware of this technology that has shown to help engage these children in their rehab exercises, as well as increasing compliance with the prescribed plan.

We talked about the fact that the technology company is actively seeking funding to support their marketing and production scalability.  The company is also interested in partnering with rehabilitation centers and physicians who would be prescribing such services so they and their patients can benefit from access to this tool.

Dr. Johnettta Maccalla, CEO, Zyrobotics

Medicare’s Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)

On this week’s episode we continue our series with Medical Association of Georgia, talking about the changing reimbursement picture for physician practices by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  Medicare’s new Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) will change, yet again, physician reimbursement over the next couple of years and it is important for practice managers and physicians to make sure they understand all new requirements.

It is imperative for medical practices to make a successful transition to Medicare’s new Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). Instead of the EHR (Electronic Health Record) or the PQRS (Physician Quality Reporting System) or the Value-based Payment Modifier programs, the government will employ a single payment platform – which is the result of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) that was signed into law in 2015.

The new payment model will be based on a 100-point MIPS Composite Performance Score. That CPS will determine your Medicare payment adjustment – either up or down. This is scheduled to commence in 2019, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will use the 2017 calendar year as the basis for the initial reimbursement – keeping mind this is not an optional process.

Elizabeth Woodcock is one of the leading third party payer and medical practice management consultants in Georgia. She is a professional speaker, trainer and author. Woodcock has focused on medical practice operations for more than 20 years. She has delivered presentations at regional and national conferences to more than 200,000 physicians and managers.

In addition to her popular email newsletters, she has authored 15 best-selling practice management books and published dozens of articles in national health

care management journals. Woodcock is a fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives and a certified professional coder. In addition to a degree from Duke University, she has an MBA in health care management from The Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania.
