Dr. Mark Beaty and Dr. Manny Rodriguez

I was joined in studio by facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Beaty, and I spoke with infectious disease physician, Dr. Manny Rodriguez about the Zika virus.

Dr. Mark Beaty specializes in elective aesthetic facial procedures to improve or reconstruct facial blemishes and flaws.  Today we know there is more than simple vanity as reasons to consider improving the look of one’s face, particularly when you are a business professional.

Dr. Beaty shared information about recent studies that looked at individuals who underwent aesthetic procedures to address issues such as symmetry with regard to their earning over time.  The study showed that business professionals in sales/leadership positions earned significantly more over time than counterparts who did not correct such issues.

We talked about some of the various ways Dr. Beaty is able to improve facial beauty, including some of the basic surgical procedures he performs, such as lifts and tucks, reconstruction of the nose, etc.  He draws upon years of experience and refinement of his technique to offer what he calls, ProLIFT, allowing optimal aesthetic result with less recovery time.

He also discussed a number of innovative non-surgical procedures he is able to offer that hasten return to work with short recovery, minimal bruising or external thermal wounds.  His CoolSculpting program creates the best value for non-surgical fat reduction through the use of a special device that is able to kill adipose cells, while protecting other tissues in the trouble spot.

He also explained the new Profound skin tightening procedure for non-surgical improvement of loose, saggy skin.  Dr. Beaty is pleased to now have an office located in Midtown Atlanta to increase convenience for his in-town patients.

We’ve heard much about the Zika virus in the news lately, as several persons in the US have been found to be carrying the disease upon returning to the US (typically from Brazil).  The virus has caused alarm due to the fact that it has recently been attributed as the cause for microcephaly in infants delivered to mothers who were infected during pregnancy.

Infectious disease physician, Dr. Manny Rodriguez took time to sit down and share some information about the virus for our listeners.  In many ways, the zika viral infection is relatively benign, according to Dr. Rodriguez, with only a small number of persons exhibiting symptoms that alert them to the fact that they were exposed to the virus.

We talked about the symptoms that are most commonly seen when symptoms manifest, how the infection is diagnosed, what to expect should one become infected, along with some useful information on how to avoid the infection to begin with.

As we approach the Olympic games that will be held in Brazil, I’m sure we will continue to focus on this issue.  I’m pleased to share some information straight from the expert for our listeners!

 Mercer University

Dr. Ashish Advani and Dr. Ted Matthews of Mercer University

Mercer University Health Services

We sat down with Dean and SVP of Health Services, Dr. Ted Matthews, and Dr. Ashish Advani, Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy from Mercer University.  Mercer University’s College of Pharmacy is ranked among the top five pharmacy programs at private institutions in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. The College offers doctoral degrees in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) and pharmaceutical sciences (Ph.D.). The College is one of four health sciences units within the Mercer Health Sciences Center, which also includes the School of Medicine,  College of Nursing, and College of Health Professions.

With an enrollment of more than 650 students and a distinguished faculty of basic scientists and clinicians, the College of Pharmacy houses seven centers focusing on research, teaching and learning. The College’s motto, “A Tradition of Excellence – A Legacy of Caring,” frames its philosophy of providing excellent academic programs in an environment where every student matters and every person counts.

Mercer University is applying an approach to their health sciences programs called, “interprofessional education or IPE”.  This approach brings students from the various health science programs together with those of the others to talk about their respective considerations when approaching certain care scenarios.  This leads to a greater understanding of the other team members of the multidisciplinary team and ultimately, better patient outcomes.

The College of Pharmacy has also developed a technology platform aimed at putting pharmacologic study data and medicine information in the hands of clinicians to facilitate evidence-based decision making.  Developed with support from Mercer University’s College of Pharmacy, InpharmD is a web-based drug information center. With an estimated 20 million pharmaceutical studies available, InpharmD offers access to the health information that healthcare providers and patients need to make informed and improved decisions.

InpharmD provides customized, evidence-based responses within a user-requested time period. By significantly increasing the credibility of the information and substantially decreasing the turnaround time, InpharmD has created a fundamental change in drug information delivery.

Project DAN and Georgia’s 911 Medical Amnesty Law

We continued our series with Medical Association of Georgia this week, talking about Project DAN and Georgia’s 911 Medical Amnesty Law.  Dallas Gay and Dr. Shonali Saha were my guests.

MAG Foundation ‘Think About It’ campaign Community Chair Dallas Gay and Shonali Saha, M.D. – an adolescent medicine and addiction medicine physician with the Georgia Behavioral Health Professionals practice in Smyrna – discussed naloxone and the state’s ‘9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Law’ on the ‘Top Docs Radio’ program on the Business Radio-X Network at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 8.

Naloxone is an effective, non-addictive prescription medication that reverses the effects of opioid drug overdoses. Under Georgia’s 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Law, naloxone can be delivered on an intranasal or intramuscular basis. Physicians in Georgia can prescribe naloxone via a standing order to a person who is at risk of experiencing an opioid overdose. And at their discretion, physicians can prescribe naloxone to pain management clinics, first responders, harm reduction organizations, or family members or friends or other people who are in a position to assist a patient who is at risk of experiencing an opioid overdose.

The 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Law provides limited immunity for individuals who possess certain drugs and drug paraphernalia when they experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care, for people who seek medical care for a person who is experiencing a drug overdose, and for certain underage drinking offenses for minors who seek medical care during an alcohol overdose.

Moving Analytics

This week I spoke with the co-founder, Harsh Vathsangam, of a technology company, Moving Analytics, that is working to significantly increase participation rates in cardiac rehabilitation. Over 900,000 Americans experience heart attacks each year.  Still more will experience heart failure, valvular disease, and other cardiovascular problems that create a diminished tolerance of activity.

We know very well that regular activity and selective behavior choices around such things as diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking, among others, play a large role in stopping or even reversing effects of these conditions.  Currently, roughly a third or less of these patients are engaging in a supervised cardiac rehab program.  Clearly, there is much room for improvement in this regard.

As a computer scientist, Harsh has long-known the power of computing and analytics data for creating efficiencies and making well-educated strategic decisions.  He and some colleagues began to look for opportunities to leverage this power in the healthcare arena, one which we know is actively seeking to reduce cost while at the same time improve patient outcomes.

The Moving Analytics app allows patients to receive frequent feedback regarding their prescribed activities and behavioral choices.  Additionally, it provides data regarding the patient’s compliance with their regimen along with some basic health data to the health professional overseeing their cardiac rehab progress.  In this way, the patient is able to engage in healthful activities that will improve their condition in the convenience of their home.  Additionally it will allow the cardiac rehab professionals to scale their services to a wider patient population, reducing cost of providing care (based on a per-provider cost).

Moving Analytics is looking to partner with hospitals and health systems who are working to improve patient engagement with these important cardiac rehab programs for the post-cardiovascular event patients.

Nelson Mullins and City of Atlanta Department of Procurement

We talked about important business considerations regarding ACA requirements this year, along with the opportunities to do business with the City of Atlanta through the Department of Procurement.  I was joined in the studio by Ann Murray, attorney with Nelson, Mullins, Riley, and Scarborough, and Chief Procurement Officer for the City of Atlanta, Adam Smith.

The ACA business mandates have begun to be implemented on larger scales over the past two years.  As we know, some of the requirements have been pushed back a couple of times, delaying their impact.  But those times are behind us and business owners need to be spending time with legal experts such as those at Nelson Mullins, to assess what their obligations will be regarding providing health insurance benefits to some or all of their employees.

Ann explained the basics of some of these requirements around health benefits for the small business.  She also discussed new reporting requirements that business owners must compile from multiple sources to be in full compliance with the law.

Murray talked about the fact that many business operators mistakenly think they’re exempt from the law’s requirements, failing to see that being a small unit that is part of a larger whole, as in the case of some multi-site businesses, potentially exposes them to have to offer benefits.  Failure to comply can result in significant financial penalties that could literally threaten the business’s viability.

Atlanta’s Chief Procurement Officer, Adam Smith stopped by to share information about the upcoming Business Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center March 31st.  This free-to-the-public event will feature a wealth of information about the numerous needs the city has for a wide variety of goods and services to operate the city’s 15 departments, including the Atlanta airport.

The expo will have sessions where small business owners can learn what is required to be able to bid on these opportunities, as well as how to fully complete the necessary documents contained in a bid to have their bid received and considered.

Adam explained that the city’s needs range from culinary services at the airport, to commodity supplies such as paper, pens, cleaning supplies, etc.  Additionally, the city is looking for engineering services, cleaning services, construction, and numerous others as well.

Smith also talked about certifications available to disadvantaged business enterprises that once obtained, provides these businesses with access to opportunities ear-marked for diversity suppliers.  He went on to distinguish these certifications businesses may obtain from county or state governments, as well as other certification bodies such as GMSDC.

Radix Health
Dr. Arun Mohan talks Radix Healths physician scheduling optimization solution.

Radix Health

Jay Shaffer and I sat down with co-founder of Radix Health, Dr. Arun Mohan.  Radix Health uses technology to improve patient access.  Radix’s flagship product, DASH, is a patent-pending, cloud-based software platform that optimizes ambulatory capacity utilization and reduces scheduling cost. DASH automates and optimizes much of the work currently done by schedulers.

DASH intelligently balances patient characteristics, patient and provider preferences, and appointment availability to match patients with the right provider at the right location for the right duration. The system supports all forms of scheduling including through an agent, provider-provider scheduling and patient self-scheduling.  DASH easily integrates with existing practice management systems.

By leveraging predictive analytics, rules-based scheduling, automation, and user experience, DASH improves access, reduces scheduling costs, eliminates scheduling errors and ensures happier patients and providers.

Arun shared how his experience as a physician, coupled with many conversations over time with colleagues, revealed there is an opportunity to improve patient satisfaction and engagement, while at the same time optimizing the physicians’ utilization of their schedule time.

The Radix Health solution integrates and enhances the basic scheduling feature of existing EMR’s, bringing valuable analytics and algorithms designed to insure a patient is scheduled with the correct specialist, avoiding the need for rescheduling and loss of productivity.

workforce management
Brian Mehaary, of NOVAtime Technologies

NOVAtime Technologies

On this episode of Midtown Business Radio, I sat down with Vice President of Business Development for NOVAtime Technologies, Inc., Brian Meharry.  NOVAtime is a Workforce Management Software Company that specializes in providing employers of all sizes access to tools that will enable them to track, monitor, report, and schedule their employee’s time.  These tools are contemporary and adhere to all compliance needs.

Brian explained how time keeping has evolved to be an important component in a cloud of data points from an employee’s work-related activities for an enterprise.  In the old days, an employee walked in, punched a clock or physically signed Time In and Time Out.

Today, signing in and signing out triggers regulated elements such as health benefits, time off accrual, tax requirements, and a host of other business, industry, and/or union rules that come into play that must be accurately tracked and reported upon.

The technology NOVAtime provides meets workforce management demands for a wide range of business sectors from government, to healthcare, manufacturing, oil & gas, and numerous others.  The company is privately-owned and has enjoyed rapid growth over the past few years, due to the consultative approach the company takes (called Sure Path) when bringing a new client on board.  NOVAtime is serving over 16,000 businesses of all sizes and over 1,000,000 employees.

In this way the company is able to identify all relevant workforce-related concerns and geographic issues to be addressed for a disperssed workforce and determine the needed software functions, hardware needs, and relevant apps to achieve the greatest compliance, efficiencies, and strategic decision-making.
