Since the weather in Atlanta has been steamy both Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy ventured outside towards the water and had some interesting adventures. Dr Fitness went to Lake Lanier and tried paddle boarding – which is standing on a large surfboard and moving yourself with a long paddle. He only fell once and narrowly missed being run over by a speeding boat. The Fat Guy broke out his inflatable canoe for a 3 hour trip down the Chattahoochee River with his son. His lack of boating skills were showcased in front of dozens of college aged kids partying their way down the river. The Fat Guy could impressively make his canoe spin in circles and float backwards down the river. And to cap off his trip the place he exits the river was blocked by a 4 foot snake.

After recapping our weekend we got the chance to  interview Rob Hurlbut with Attune Foods – home of delicious chocolate probiotics as well as Uncle Sam and Erewhon Cereal Rob shared the importance of probiotics for good digestive health. He said that for good digestive health you should do 3 things.

  1. Avoid things that you are allergic to
  2. Get more fiber in your diet
  3. Have good bacteria (probiotics) in your gut

Ovarian cancer is a deadly disease if not caught early. That is one big reason women should be diligent in getting their annual ob/gym exam. This cancer attacks the ovaries. The Fat Guy’s wife’s grandmother died from this because she did not catch it in time. Some symptoms are blocked abdomen, feeling full all the time, unusual pressure in the pelvis area and an unusual tightening of your clothes.

How about marinating your meat before grilling in order to grill a little safer this summer. Marinating meat cuts about 60% of the dangerous HCA which is produced when grilling at high temperatures. Use a red wine based marinade rather than one that has high fructose. Turn the meat often to prevent burning. And cook with the skin on the meat but remove it before you eat your meal. And grill more vegetables – so you don’t have to worry about HCA at all. We know you’re going to fire up the grill this summer so just be a little safer okay – we can’t afford to lose any listeners.

People take their refrigerator for granted. It is quietly doing its job, minding its own business. But danger could be lurking behind those stainless steel doors.  Is your fridge the right temperature. It better be 40 degrees or colder in there. Do you ever check? Probably not enough. Do you regularly clean out all the spoiled and spilled food and rinks in your refrigerator? You should be cause guess where germs and bacteria like to live – that’s right in spoiled and spilled food and rinks – so get in there and clean up all that mess. And while you’re cleaning up that sticky mess why don’t you take the time and toss all the unhealthy food that’s in there as weell and replace it with some healthy food.

Everyone loves spinach – from Popeye to Dr Fitness. No one debates how healthy it is but some people aren’t crazy about the taste. Here is a salad recipe that even the most picky spinach eater will eat. In a big bowl throw in baby spinach, with chopped avocado, and red bell peppers. Olives work well here if you like them along with onions. If you feel adventurous make some homemade croutons by baking some bread and crumbling it in the salad. Use a nice vinegarette dressing and you are good to go.

Summer’s here so let the grilling begin. Here is a refreshing lemon chicken recipe that is great for the barbeque. Mix up some lemon juice with honey, olive oil and some spices. Rub some of that dressing on your 4 6 oz chicken breasts. Grill them up. Then you can make a cole slaw with some cabbage and even use the remaining dressing on that as well.
