Dr. Mark McLaughlin and Shannon Ross, Wellstar North Fulton Cancer Center (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 479)

Wellstar radiation oncologist Dr. Mark McLaughlin and Director of Oncology Services Shannon Ross joined host John Ray to discuss the new Wellstar North Fulton Cancer Center built on the Wellstar North Fulton campus. This comprehensive care center will serve as one of only two locations in metro Atlanta featuring state-of-the-art CyberKnife® technology for radiation therapy. Dr. McLaughlin and Shannon covered the services it will bring to patients, why CyberKnife® technology improves patient experience and outcomes, their unique approach to collaborative patient care, and much more.

North Fulton Business Radio is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Wellstar Cancer Care

People face cancer with confidence at Wellstar because of their multidisciplinary care model, physicians’ expertise and advanced treatments close to home. In fact, they have more than 300 healthcare providers that provide expert cancer care at nine cancer programs with convenient locations across Georgia.

Their multidisciplinary teams surround patients and their families with knowledgeable and compassionate support. Specialty programs for patients are led by physicians with advanced training. Here, patients see leading specialists who are experts in their fields.

Wellstar invests in state-of-the-art technology and participates in clinical trials to give patients access to a variety of advanced treatments including minimally-invasive surgery, high precision radiation dosages by CyberKnife and TrueBeam delivery systems, intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC) as well as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies based on the latest advances in biomarker testing. Patients who qualify for clinical trials have access to groundbreaking treatments, often years before they are FDA-approved.

Because of Wellstar’s integrated approach to cancer treatment, their programs are nationally recognized by The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancerand the Care Continuum Centers of Excellence (CCCOE), a program of the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, among others.

Radiation Oncology

At Wellstar, radiation oncologists design a personalized plan for each patient. Radiation therapy delivers targeted energy from X-rays or radioactive sources to destroy cancer cells in a localized area.

Cancer is caused by cells with mutations in the DNA that cause them to grow uncontrollably. Wellstar radiation oncologists use advanced radiation techniques and technology to turn cancer’s strength into its greatest weakness. Radiation attacks cancer by altering the DNA within cancer cells and preventing them from reproducing and growing. Radiation therapy is completely painless—what patients experience during the radiation treatment is similar to undergoing imaging X-rays.

Radiation is effective for treating patients with many different types of cancer, including lung, breast and prostate cancer. Wellstar radiation oncologists design the best radiation therapy for each person based on the cancer type, the stage and various factors. The patient may benefit from radiation alone, or combined with other cancer treatments such as surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or chemotherapy.

Cindy David, Cindy David Designs & Cindy David Yoga (Time Well Spent with Julie Hullett, Episode 5)

On this episode of Time Well Spent with Julie Hullett, Julie’s guest was Cindy David, who owns and operates both Cindy David Designs and Cindy David Yoga. Julie and Cindy had a lively conversation about how she got into making jewelry, her driving force, her yoga practice and how she became a teacher, her favorite hobbies, and much more.

For listeners, Cindy also offered a discount using code Julie15 for a free yoga class on her yoga website or 15 percent off jewelry at her jewelry website. These offers expire on December 31st, 2022.

At the end of the show, Julie shared a Quick Tip about focusing on the bigger picture.

Time Well Spent with Julie Hullett is presented by Julie Hullett Concierge, LLC and produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

Cindy David Designs

Throughout history, every culture has used jewelry as a means of expression.

Its purpose has been to symbolize unions, commemorate births, be worn as protection, and is valued in spiritual and healing practices. As an adornment, jewelry is meant to be pleasing to the eye and senses. Cindy David, founder and master designer of Cindy David Designs, is rooted in these principles and dedicated to producing high-quality, one-of-a-kind pieces of “wearable art.”

Cindy’s Mediterranean heritage, extensive world travels, and innate artistic talents come together to create her original designs, using natural Gemstones, Semi-precious stones, Swarovski Crystals, Freshwater pearls, and Silver and Gold components. Cindy allows herself to marry stones and metals not traditionally imagined, yet when combined form beautiful works of art that adorn the wearer with vivid color and will be treasured for years to come.

Cindy also designs custom pieces for her clients upon request, utilizing their input along with her gift of color and materials to style and create an individualized work of art. Cindy David Designs is a Nashville-based company dedicated to providing beautiful jewelry for all.

Over the years, her designs have been featured in many prestigious Art Museums across the country including the Ringling Brothers Museum of Art (Sarasota), Dallas Museum of Art, The High (Atlanta), Knoxville Museum of Art, The Frist (Nashville), etc. In addition to the art museum circuit, she has sold her designs in many high-end boutiques all around the country.

She has exhibited in many high-end Art & Craft Shows across the country. She has been featured in Nashville Lifestyles magazine, had her jewelry featured on Today in Nashville, and is constantly wearing her own designs where women will literally buy things off her neck, wrists, and fingers! She specializes in doing custom jewelry designs for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, keepsakes, bespoke jewelry and “just b/c” gifts. Every piece is a piece of art for her and designed with much love.

Cindy David Yoga

Cindy David has been practicing yoga for over 20 years now and it has had a holistic life-changing impact in every area of her life.

After an intensive 4-month teacher training, Cindy emerged like a phoenix from the ashes with this profound sense of inner well-being, a new sense of confidence, and the ability to start speaking her own inner truth. Since that time, she has become certified in Kundalini Yoga and started to directly work with the Chakra energy system. Depending on the student, she offers Vinyasa/Power Flow Yoga and Kundalini. Oftentimes, she combines both of these types of yoga in her classes in her own signature program, “FLowlini”.

During the pandemic, she was one of the first yoga teachers to go online and started offering “FB lives” just to get people moving and out of the COVID crazies.

She works with private clients all the time and started working with a fun group of 75-85 year olds. She learns as much from them as they learn from her. Additionally, Cindy has taught all over Nashville at Studio Indigo, Small World Yoga, and the Gordon Jewish Community Center.

In the community, she teaches at Faith Family Medical Center, The Next Door (a recovery center for women in addiction), and the Women’s Prison. She also teaches in high-end apartment complexes from Sylvan Park, to the Gulch and everywhere in between.

Lastly, she hosts fun yoga events – Yoga Brunches, Yoga & Mimosas, and 1/2 day retreats from her Nashville home backyard.

Cindy David, Owner, Cindy David Designs & Cindy David Yoga

Cindy David, Owner, Cindy David Designs & Cindy David Yoga

Cindy has been designing jewelry for the past 20 years. She has come a long way from working with plastic beads and plated metals being sold at the I-24 Expo Center and Flea Markets. And, even then her designs sold out at these shows. While working at Coca-Cola, she got her “big break.” While running errands for her then boss, she ran into a lady at Starbucks who complimented her on her jewelry and Cindy shared that she was a  “jewelry designer.” She was intrigued and asked if Cindy would come to her small real estate office.

Cindy showed up to that tiny real estate office of 4 women and not only sold out of her current designs, but took orders for the same pieces! She made more money in that 1.5 hour appointment than in a whole week working at Coca-Cola! Shortly, after that fortuitous meeting, she left Coca- Cola and Cindy David Designs was born. The rest is HER-story!

Cindy David has been practicing yoga for over 20 years because it brought a sense of calm and inner peace that she had only heard about through “Spiritual Masters” but didn’t think was available to her. While in a Hot Vinyasa Class, the teacher’s words made such an impact on her that she signed up immediately for Teacher Training immediately and has now been teaching for 3 years.

Cindy lives in Nashville with her two rescue cats. After her two loves of yoga and making jewelry, Cindy loves travel and cooking.

TRANSCRIPT

Intro: [00:00:01] Broadcasting from the studios of Business RadioX, it’s time for Advisory Insights. Brought to you by Oberman Law Firm, serving clients nationwide with tailored service and exceptional results. Now, here’s your host.

Stuart Oberman: [00:00:19] Welcome everyone to Advisory Insights Podcast. I am your host, Stuart Oberman.

Stuart Oberman: [00:00:25] Well, you know, for those that know me, I tell you, we do a lot of H.R. as a firm. We see a lot of problems locally, nationally, regionally, globally on H.R. violations. So, I want to talk a little bit about H.R. violations, really an overview of potential H.R. employer violations. That is such a wide area. I mean, we’re talking about employment law. We’re talking about State, Federal regulatory issues. We’re talking about EEOC. And we’re talking about audits. We’re talking about, you know, employee complaints.

Stuart Oberman: [00:00:57] So, what I want to do is to just talk about a couple of things top of mind that can really get you into trouble. And I’ll tell you, we see a lot of these areas of concern that can really, really be avoided. But it’s going to take some soul searching. It’s going to take some drilling down. It’s going to take some hard decisions. Look, you can’t turn a ship around overnight. You’ve got to make small steps.

Stuart Oberman: [00:01:23] And if you do anything on these podcast, it’s take a look at what we’re talking about and apply it to what you have, whether you’re a health care practice, whether you are a startup, whether you are a billion dollar construction company. It doesn’t matter, the same law applies. So, let’s take a look at some of the most common ways that we feel that employers violate the law.

Stuart Oberman: [00:01:47] It this Great Resignation world that we’re in, our employers use prohibited questions during job interviews. You have to be very, very careful. And we’re going to cover this in future podcasts. So, a lot of these areas we’re going to expand upon, but we’re just going to have top of mind issues. Job interviews, questions, are you prepared? The answer is probably not. Are your candidates recording your conversations? You bet they are.

Stuart Oberman: [00:02:21] So, one of the things that we take a look at also is not allowing employees, depending on the size of the business, a lot of ramifications of employees discuss their pay. Now, we’re looking at National Labor Relations Board issues. So, yeah, the National Labor Relations Board, you bet, will apply to small businesses.

Stuart Oberman: [00:02:42] Overtime, one of the biggest, biggest errors that our employers get in trouble with are overtime. And I say this all the time when I speak, when I talk, overtime is a lot of things. You’re working 40 hours a week, so you’re texting your employees after hours. Yeah, that’s overtime. Your emailing your staff, overtime, yeah. You’re calling your office manager, depending on where they’re located at, if they make $100,000 hours or more, they are still subject to overtime. You’ve got to be careful with this. We’re going to take a look at some of the issues coming forward also.

Stuart Oberman: [00:03:17] Huge issue, independent contractor versus employee. The IRS loves these kind of reviews. Key, are you controlling a time, place, and manner? That’s a whole topic for discussion on employee versus independent contractor. It is very tough to win that argument. It is very tough to win an audit on that.

Stuart Oberman: [00:03:37] So, one thing, this great, great social media world that we live in, are you disciplining your employees who are complaining about you – small, medium, large company – on social media? Do you have restrictions? Are you following them on social media? Are you looking for things that they’re saying about you?

Stuart Oberman: [00:04:07] How to prevent also a hostile work environment, and I’m talking about gender neutral. I’m talking about harassment. I’m talking about all forms of harassment, bullying. I can’t believe what some of our clients tell us happens in their employment situations. I’m talking about Title VII violations. I’m talking about sexual orientation issues. I’m talking about gender identity. I’m talking about religion. I’m talking about race, color, national origin. These are all the things that occur on a hostile work environment that are a violation of Federal Law.

Stuart Oberman: [00:04:45] Look, I could probably take any one of these topics and discuss an hour on them. Again, what do we do with Advisory Insights Podcast? What are we doing? We’re taking the high level topics with a 10,000 foot view and are you looking at these particular areas. Six, seven, eight areas, are you looking at them? Again, short, sweet bullet point topics that we could talk an hour on. That’s the goal on Advisory Insights Podcast. That’s what we want to do. We want to take things at a very high level, apply it to what you’re looking at, whether you’re, again, small, startup. Are you looking at these things?

Stuart Oberman: [00:05:24] We’re going to continue talking about these things in greater detail. We’re going to continue talking about what affects our employers on a regional, national, local basis – excuse me – global basis. I want to talk about also some of these things on future podcasts. And, also, don’t forget, we also cover these on our newsletter, Advisory Insights. If you want to get a copy of our newsletter, please let us know.

Stuart Oberman: [00:05:49] Folks, thank you very much for joining us on our Advisory Insights Podcast. Please visit us at advisoryinsightspodcast.com. If you want to reach me, please feel free to call the office, 770-886-2400 or visit Oberman Law Firm, obermanlawfirm.com, or send me an email, stuart, S-T-U-A-R-T, @obermanlaw.com.

Stuart Oberman: [00:06:14] Thank you, everyone for listening to us. Keep listening to our podcast. If you have any questions, let me know. Have a fantastic day, everyone. Thank you.

Outro: [00:06:24] Thank you for joining us on Advisory Insights. Introduction to the Advisory Insights Podcast

In this introductory episode of the Advisory Insights Podcast, Stuart Oberman welcomed listeners to this new podcast featuring legal, business, HR, and other topics of vital concern to healthcare practices and other business owners. (Advisory Insights is the successor show to Dental Law Radio.) He went on to cover an extensive list of essential topics to be included in employee manuals and guidelines and more.

TRANSCRIPT

Intro: [00:00:01] Broadcasting from the studios of Business RadioX, it’s time for Advisory Insights. Brought to you by Oberman Law Firm, serving clients nationwide with tailored service and exceptional results. Now, here’s your host.

Stuart Oberman : [00:00:19] Hello everyone, and welcome to Advisory Insights Podcast. Well, first, I’d like to welcome our dental clients who followed us over to dentallawradio.com, and also our new listeners. I could not be more excited about what we’re doing with Advisory Insights Podcast.

Stuart Oberman : [00:00:36] We had a platform previously, and we discovered that we are getting national exposure on our platforms, what we said before. So, we took a little bit of a break and we decided, You know what? We’re going to take what you can use, no matter whether you are a health care practice or global company. We’re going to keep things simple. We’re going to keep it basic. And what our clients need to know on a day-to-day basis on how to stay, hopefully, out of trouble.

Stuart Oberman : [00:01:04] And we’d like to thank North Fulton Business Radio and Business RadioX for hosting us. But we’re going to start gearing this thing up pretty hard.

Stuart Oberman : [00:01:13] So, what are we going to talk about today? Well, let me just tell you this. In this great world that we live in of the Great Resignation, H.R. is a headache, there’s no doubt about it. So, I’ve been talking for a while on employee manuals and guidelines. I want to start off on a couple of things that, again, no matter what size you are, you need to take a look at this.

Stuart Oberman : [00:01:31] First and foremost, I don’t care if you have $1,000,000 a year on revenue or $50 billion, you need to look at your H.R. annually. You have to take a look at what the company culture is, what the headcount is, what are your benefits, are your renewals up. And in today’s world, I’ve been stressing for a long, long time, look, employee manuals will either make you or break you, and are just no longer an option.

Stuart Oberman : [00:01:56] And we had a really, really great podcast with SHRM Atlanta. For those of you that don’t know what SHRM Atlanta is, it’s an unbelievable organization. And we get a lot of information from those guys on a regular basis. And it’s employee manuals. It’s H.R. It’s a lot of internal information.

Stuart Oberman : [00:02:21] But I want to tell you something, what is no longer an option, you’ve got to know State and Federal law. You’ve got to know about EEOC. You’ve got to know about National Labor Relations Board. You have to know the Age Discrimination and Employment Act of 1967. You’ve got to know Title VII of the Civil Rights Act 1964. You have to know the Equal Pay Act of 1963. You got to know the Worker’s Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. You’ve got to know Sections 1981 and 1983 of the Civil Rights Act. You’ve got to know the American Disabilities Act. You’ve got to know the Family for Medical Leave Act. You’ve got to know the Employees Retirement Income Security Act. You have to know the Old Benefits Protection Act. You have to know the Age Discrimination Act of 1967.

Stuart Oberman : [00:03:04] How in the world are you going to run a business if you don’t know what those things are? Those have got to be in your manual. There’s no longer an option. If you don’t know any of those, if you don’t know a lot of those, or you don’t know really all of those, you need to figure out what you’re doing. You need to look internally at what you’re doing.

Stuart Oberman : [00:03:20] And failure to plan, I can’t tell you how many clients we have that are global, local, regional, and national that have no idea what I’m talking about. And that’s extremely dangerous. Not only is it costly, it’s a nightmare. So, a couple of provisions are really no longer an option. Really, again, drilling it down, What do you need? What do you need?

Stuart Oberman : [00:03:45] You know, first and foremost, in your employee manuals, you’ve got to have the at-will statements, you have the disclaimers, you’ve got to have the EEOC statement, you’ve got to have the anti-harassment issues. You’ve got to have the wage and salary, leave of absence, drug testing, social media policies. You’ve got to have the non-solicitation employment acknowledgment manual. How many employers out there have given their employee manuals to people, documents, and have no signatures acknowledging if it’s not in writing, it never happened. I’ll just telling you that right now.

Stuart Oberman : [00:04:15] You know, do you have your Family and Medical Leave Act policies? Do you have a non-gender discrimination salary ranges? When is the last time you’ve thoroughly evaluated your salaries ranges gender neutral. If they are not gender neutral, you are in a world of hurt. Are we looking at nondiscrimination in dress codes now? Are we looking at tattoo issues? Are we looking at age inquiries of prospective employees? Age inquiries, that’s a no, no. We’re going to cover that in probably our future podcasts. Holiday pay, voting time, Education Assistance Program.

Stuart Oberman : [00:04:58] Look, I know I ran through this so, so fast. I could probably spend 40 minutes on each topic that I ran through on the employee manual requirements, on employee guideline requirements. Here’s the key, again, what we’ve done on a local level, regional, national level, global level, again, whether you are a small health care provider or whether you’re a building company, these are the basics you’ve got to know. We have clients that have no H.R. client, but they’re doing a half-a-billion dollars a year. I don’t really understand that.

Stuart Oberman : [00:05:33] So, look, if you just took one thing away, it is you’ve got to know these things. If you have any questions, let us know. Hopefully, by listening to the podcast, again, we ran through a lot of information. I could talk, you know, an hour on each topic that we talked about. The key is evaluate, evaluate, evaluate.

Stuart Oberman : [00:05:50] And these are the kind of things we want to bring to you on a very, very scaled down basis on advisorypodcast.com. And we’re going to continue to do this and we’re going to continue to broadcast to our constituents, to our clients, to our friends in the industry, whether it’s health care, whether it’s general business that these are things you have to know.

Stuart Oberman : [00:06:11] Well, that is going to be our first episode of advisoryinsightspodcast.com Thank you everyone for joining us. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at 770-886-2400 or visit us at obermanlaw.com, or, in this great world that we live in, email. Please feel free to email at stuart, S-T-U-A-R-T, @obermanlaw.com.

Stuart Oberman : [00:06:37] Thank you, everyone, and we appreciate your attendance in today’s podcast. And we look forward to jumping on some more hot topics. Have a great day, everyone. Thank you.

Outro: [00:06:49] Thank you for joining us on Advisory Insights. Dr. Morrow’s Show Notes

What are heat exhaustion and heatstroke?

  • Heat exhaustion happens when your body gets too hot.
    • If you don’t treat heat exhaustion, it can lead to heatstroke.
    • This occurs when your internal temperature reaches at least 104°F.
    • Heatstroke is much more serious than heat exhaustion.
      • It can cause shock, organ failure, or brain damage. In extreme cases, heatstroke can kill you.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke

  • Symptoms of heat exhaustion are:
    • Muscle cramps
    • Heavy sweating
    • Pale or cold skin
    • Weakness and/or confusion
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Fast heartbeat
    • Dark-colored urine, which indicates dehydration
  • In addition to these symptoms, warning signs of heatstroke also include:
    • Fever of 104°F or higher
    • Flushed or red skin
    • Lack of sweating
    • Trouble breathing
    • Fainting
    • Seizures

What causes heat exhaustion and heatstroke?

  • Heat-related illnesses occur when your body can’t keep itself cool.
    • As the temperature rises, your body produces sweat to stay cool.
      • On hot, humid days, the increased moisture in the air slows down this process.
      • When your body can’t cool, your temperature rises and you can become ill.
  • Hot weather and exercise are the main causes of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
    • In hot settings, you need to be mindful of the temperature outside.
    • The heat index is not the same as the temperature.
      • It measures the air temperature plus the effects of humidity.
      • A heat index of 90°F or higher calls for extreme caution.
      • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures increases your risk of heat-related illnesses.

How are heat exhaustion and heatstroke diagnosed?

  • If a person is displaying known heat illness symptoms,
    • take their temperature.
    • A reading of 104°F or more means they probably have heatstroke.
    • You should call 911 and get medical care right away.

Can heat exhaustion and heatstroke be prevented or avoided?

  • There are many things you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses.
    • Babies, children, and elderly people are more sensitive to heat and require extra attention.
    • You also are at greater risk if you are ill or obese, or have heart disease.
    • People who work outside or in a hot setting also are at risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
  • Don’t go outside when the temperature and heat index are high.
  • If possible, stay indoors in air-conditioned areas.
  • If you must go outside, take the following precautions.
    • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
    • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella.
    • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
      • Dehydration and lack of salt contribute to heat-related illnesses.
      • Some sports drinks can help replenish the salt in your body lost through sweating.
      • Drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
      • If your urine is clear, you are probably drinking enough fluids.
      • Dark-colored urine is a sign that you’re dehydrated.
    • Avoid or limit drinks that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee, and soda) or alcohol.
    • Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
    • Take frequent breaks from the heat and outdoor activities.
    • Do not stay in or leave a child in your car when it is hot outside.
      • Even if you open the windows, the intense heat can be extremely dangerous.
  • Certain medicines can put you in danger of heatstroke.
    • They affect the way your body reacts to heat.
      • Talk to your doctor if you take any of these or have an ongoing health problem.
      • They can help you manage the heat with your condition.
      • These medicines include:
        • Antibiotics
        • Allergy medicines (antihistamines)
        • Some medicines used to manage blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart disease (beta-blockers and vasoconstrictors)
        • Some medicines that treat mental health problems (antidepressants and antipsychotics)
        • Seizure medicines (anticonvulsants)
        • Water pills (diuretics)
        • Laxatives
        • Some diet pills
        • Prescription acne medicines
        • Illegal drugs, such as cocaine (amphetamines)

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke treatment

  • If you or someone else has heat exhaustion, treat symptoms in the following ways.
    • Get out of the heat quickly
      • and into a cool place, or at least shade.
    • Lie down and elevate your legs
      • to get blood flowing to your heart.
    • Take off any tight or extra clothing.
    • Apply cool towels to your skin or take a cool bath.
      • This will help regulate and lower your internal body temperature.
    • Drink fluids, such as water or a sports drink.
      • Do not guzzle them, but take sips.
      • Do not drink fluids with caffeine or alcohol.
  • Call 911 if:
    • Symptoms don’t improve
      • or they still have a fever of 102°F after 30 minutes of initial treatment.
    • The person goes into
      • shock,
      • faints,
      • or has seizures.
    • The person is not breathing.
    • You also should begin CPR right away to try and revive them.

Living with heat exhaustion and heatstroke

  • After you’ve had heat exhaustion or heatstroke,
    • you will be sensitive to heat.
    • This can last for about a week.
    • It’s important to rest and let your body recover.
    • Avoid hot weather and exercise.
    • Ask your doctor when it’s safe to return to your normal activities.

Complications

  • Complications include secondary infections, pneumonia, sepsis, encephalitis, and loss of vision if severe eye infection.
    • If infection occurs during pregnancy, still birth or birth defects may occur.
    • The disease may be milder in people vaccinated against smallpox in childhood.

Causes

  • Monkeypox in both humans and animals is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus – a double-stranded DNA virus.
    • The virus is found mainly in tropical rainforest regions of Central and West Africa.
    • The virus is split into Congo Basin and West African clades, matching the geographical areas.
  • Most human cases of monkeypox are acquired from an infected animal,
    • though the route of transmission remains unknown.
    • The virus is thought to enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth.
    • Once a human is infected, transmission to other humans is common, with family members and hospital staff at particularly high risk of infection.
  • Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through close contact with an infected subject.
    • There are indications that transmission occurs during sexual intercourse.
  • Monkeypox symptoms tend to begin 5 to 21 days after infection.

Prevention

  • Vaccination against smallpox is assumed to provide protection against human monkeypox infection
    • because they are closely related viruses
      • and the vaccine protects animals from experimental lethal monkeypox challenges.
      • This has not been conclusively demonstrated in humans because routine smallpox vaccination was discontinued following the eradication of smallpox.

Treatment

  • In the European Union and the United States, tecovirimat is approved for the treatment of several poxviruses, including monkeypox.
    • Best Practice recommends tecovirimat or the smallpox treatment brincidofovir as the first line antiviral treatment if required,
      • alongside supportive care (including antipyretic, fluid balance and oxygenation).
      • Empirical antibiotic therapy or aciclovir may be used if secondary bacterial or varicella zoster infection is suspected, respectively.

Our Mission

We help local business leaders get the word out about the important work they’re doing to serve their market, their community, and their profession.

We support and celebrate business by sharing positive business stories that traditional media ignores. Some media leans left. Some media leans right. We lean business.
