Revved Up Kids

Revved Up Kids is on a mission to protect children and teens from sexual abuse and exploitation.

Revved Up Kids teaches children and teens who predators are and how they operate and equips them to respond appropriately if they encounter a predator. They also teach adults to be better protectors. Revved Up Kids has trained almost 40,000 Atlanta-area children to be safer.

Revved Up Kids offers a spectrum of more than 20 training programs that are provided in-person, virtually and on video. They work with private groups, youth-serving organizations, schools, police agencies, houses of worship, healthcare organizations and others to provide training that helps children and teens stay safer from the life-altering consequences of sexual abuse.

Alli Neal, Co-Founder, Revved Up Kids

Alli Neal is a child safety expert and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Atlanta-based Revved Up Kids. She holds a degree in Business from Miami University of Ohio. Alli’s continuing education includes child sexual abuse, trauma-informed care, and adverse childhood experience. Alli is the mother of two young adults.

Alli is a member of several nonprofit collaboratives, including the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber Nonprofit Roundtable (where she is currently the chairperson), the DeKalb Youth Services Coalition, and the Cobb Collaborative where she chaired the Family & Children Strategy Team in 2019 and 2020. Alli was selected as a Nonprofit Community Impact Leader by the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce in 2018 and 2019.

In 2010, Alli and her husband David founded Revved Up Kids to protect children and teenagers from sexual abuse and exploitation. To date, Revved Up Kids has trained almost 40,000 children and teens to be safer from sexual predators.

The Value of a Dime

The value of a dime is not ten cents. Depending on the circumstances, its value, like any “surprise and delight” gesture we extend to a client, prospect, or someone in our network, can be priceless, and cement your status as a person of value. John Ray: [00:00:00] Hello. I’m John Ray on The Price and Value Journey. In 1987, psychologist Norbert Schwarz conducted a study in which he and his team of researchers repeatedly left a dime near a copy machine where it would be found by those that use the machine.

John Ray: [00:00:22] Those individuals who found the dime were surveyed shortly thereafter, and what the study showed was their overall satisfaction with life was found to be greater than those subjects who did not find the dime. What Swartz and his team documented was the value of a positive surprise, even when the cost of that gesture to the giver was negligible.

John Ray: [00:00:49] Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with an entrepreneur who had just started her services business. She needed help with her pricing and she really wasn’t in a position to hire me for a normal engagement. I spent an hour or so on the phone with her talking about some of her various issues and what she was up to with her business. I gave her some ideas that I thought would help her. And I thought we had a good conversation and I left it at that.

John Ray: [00:01:18] Now, normally, when I have these conversations, I’m not expecting to get anything back in return. I’m just giving to someone that I think could use my assistance and they’ve asked for it.

John Ray: [00:01:29] Well, several days later, this thoughtful entrepreneur sent me a $100 gift certificate for a top notch steakhouse in the area where I live. Now, this gesture was hardly a dime on a copying machine. She surprised and delighted me.

John Ray: [00:01:49] Needless to say, I sent her a thank you note to tell her how thoughtful she was about what she had done. And needless to say, any time she calls me in the future, I’ll gladly take her call and help her in whatever way I can, not because she gave me a card for a steakhouse, a dinner which I could buy on my own. That’s not the point.

John Ray: [00:02:09] The point is, she put herself at top of mind because she gave me a surprise and delight gesture. You see, the gift card was generous, but it wasn’t about the amount or even the card, it was the emotion that her gesture engendered in me. An emotion that I still hold for this individual. These nice touches don’t necessarily mean a lot to us when we do them, but they have high value to our clients, prospects, and just those in our network that we want to reward. They create an emotional value and reciprocity that lasts for a long time.

John Ray: [00:02:48] I happen to think these kind of surprise and delight gestures mean much more than what almost seems like a mandatory holiday gift. The gifts that get lost in the shuffle of everyone else’s gift that year end. I happen to subscribe to the notion that you’re better off slipping in the surprise and delight gestures through the year when you can, as opposed to making a big deal out of holiday gifting.

John Ray: [00:03:17] I know I’m going to be in trouble now with some of my friends who have gifting businesses, but remember them throughout the year, not just at the holidays. They’re not as busy then, and they can help much faster and much quicker throughout the year. But when you do that, it stands out more in the minds of those that you care about. And it goes a long way toward cementing your place in the minds of others as a person of value.

Richard Grove, Host, “Organization Conversation”

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

The Wall Control story began in 1968 in a small tool & die shop just outside Atlanta, Georgia. The first of three generations began their work in building a family-based US manufacturer with little more than hard work and the American Dream.

To be successful in your solo or small firm professional services practice, there are a few “psychological dance steps” you must absorb. The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

John Ray: [00:00:00] Hello. I’m John Ray on The Price and Value Journey. To successfully build your professional services practice, you must learn a few psychological dance steps- I guess I would call them – with yourself.

John Ray: [00:00:15] You must understand the value of your intervention to the client. You must understand that it’s not about what I’m worth. The IT is the client’s perceived value of the outcomes you create for them.

John Ray: [00:00:32] You must not allow this realization to affect your confidence in yourself or the services you provide. Speaking of confidence, you must be told you’re too expensive on enough proposals to know your pricing is close to where it should be. You can’t be so needy for affirmation that you allow objections to cause you to discount to win business, and that move will fail anyway.

John Ray: [00:01:05] You must be bold enough to walk away from clients who you know are a bad fit for your practice, not just for you, but for them. You must be humble enough to acknowledge that you’re not the best provider for all clients. You must be grateful for the confidence clients place in you. Humble enough to recognize that you must always look for ways to deliver value, whether that benefits you or not.

John Ray: [00:01:40] You must realize that clients change, and you may not be the best fit for them indefinitely. And you must realize, of course, that you change as well.

John Ray: [00:01:51] And with all of this, you must give yourself a little grace and realize that you’ll never get it all exactly right. I know that’s true for me.

What’s the impact?

  • Social media is a big part of many teens’ lives.
    • A 2018 Pew Research Center survey of nearly 750 13- to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost constantly
      • and 97% use a social media platform,
        • such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

But what impact does social media use have on teens?

Social media benefits

  • Social media allows teens to create online identities,
    • communicate with others
    • and build social networks.
      • These networks can provide teens with valuable support,
        • especially helping those who experience exclusion or have disabilities or chronic illnesses.
      • Teens also use social media for entertainment and self-expression.
        • And the platforms can expose teens to current events,
          • allow them to interact across geographic barriers
            • and teach them about a variety of subjects,
              • including healthy behaviors.
            • Social media that’s humorous or distracting or provides a meaningful connection to peers and a wide social network might even help teens avoid depression.

Social media harms

  • However, social media use can also negatively affect teens,
    • distracting them,
    • disrupting their sleep,
    • and exposing them
      • to bullying,
      • rumor spreading,
      • unrealistic views of other people’s lives
      • and peer pressure.
    • The risks might be related to how much social media teens use.
      • A 2019 study of more than 6,500 12- to 15-year-olds in the U.S.
        • found that those who spent more than three hours a day using social media might be at heightened risk for mental health problems.
        • Another 2019 study of more than 12,000 13- to 16-year-olds in England
          • found that using social media more than three times a day predicted poor mental health and well-being in teens.
        • Other studies also have observed links between high levels of social media use and depression or anxiety symptoms.
          • A 2016 study of more than 450 teens found that
          • greater social media use, nighttime social media use and emotional investment in social media —
            • such as feeling upset when prevented from logging on —
  • were each linked with worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and depression.
  • How teens use social media also might determine its impact.
    • A 2015 study found that
      • social comparison
      • and feedback seeking
        • by teens using social media and cellphones was linked with depressive symptoms.
        • In addition, a 2013 study found that older adolescents who used social media passively,
          • such as by just viewing others’ photos,
            • reported declines in life satisfaction.
            • Those who used social media to interact with others or post their own content didn’t experience these declines.
          • Another study on the impact of social media
            • on undergraduate college students
              • showed that the longer they used Facebook,
                • the stronger was their belief that others were happier than they were.
                • But the more time the students spent going out with their friends, the less they felt this way.
              • Because of teens’ impulsive natures,
                • experts suggest that teens who post content on social media
                  • are at risk of sharing intimate photos or highly personal stories.
                  • This can result in teens
                    • being bullied,
                    • harassed or
                    • even blackmailed.
                    • Teens often create posts without considering these consequences or privacy concerns.

Protecting your teen

  • There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
  • Consider these tips:
  • Set reasonable limits.
    • Talk to your teen about how to avoid letting social media interfere
      • with his or her activities,
      • sleep,
      • meals
      • or homework.
      • Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and tablets out of teens’ bedrooms.
        • Set an example by following these rules yourself.
      • Monitor your teen’s accounts.
        • Let your teen know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts.
          • You might aim to do so once a week or more.
          • Make sure you follow through.
        • Explain what’s not OK.
          • Discourage your teen
            • from gossiping,
            • spreading rumors,
            • bullying
            • or damaging someone’s reputation —
              • online or otherwise.
              • Talk to your teen about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
            • Encourage face-to-face contact with friends.
              • This is particularly important for teens who are vulnerable to social anxiety disorder.
            • Talk about social media.
              • Talk about your own social media habits.
                • Ask your teen how he or she is using social media
                  • and how it makes him or her feel.
                  • Remind your teen that social media is full of unrealistic images.

If you think your teen is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child’s health care provider.
