Business Success, Networking, and Giving Back, with Mark McKenzie, Docqmax Digital Printing (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 738)

This episode of North Fulton Business Radio features Mark McKenzie of Docqmax Digital Printing, who joined host John Ray to share his experiences as a business owner and the significant lessons he’s gained over the course of his career. Mark discussed the history of Docqmax, their remarkable record as a second-generation family business, and how he and his brothers have navigated the twists and turns in the printing industry. Mark shared his views about the importance of networking and creating valuable relationships for business growth. He also discussed the importance of giving back, touching on his longtime involvement with the Golf for the Kids Invitational, an annual golf tournament that raises funds for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and supports children battling cancer. Additionally, Mark imparted insights on how investing in real estate became one of Docqmax’s best business moves, the importance of support from outside professional advisors, and much more.

North Fulton Business Radio is hosted by John Ray and broadcast and produced from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Docqmax Digital Printing

Docqmax Digital Printing and the McKenzie Brothers have been providing their experience and expertise in marketing, printing, and copying to Metro Atlanta area businesses since 1975, and you’ll find that they’re enthusiastic about what they do.

They started out as a Quik Print Printing Franchisee in the heart of Buckhead and established locations in Downtown and Midtown Atlanta, as well as the Cobb Galleria Area. During this time, Rich, Mark, and Mike became second-generation owners and led the company to become one of the top Quik Print franchisees in the nation. After more than 22 years of being a consistent sales leader and producer in the Quik Print franchise system, they became an independent printing company, and Docqmax Digital Printing was launched.

They later consolidated their strengths under one roof in Atlanta’s West Midtown district in 2004. In their current location, they have been able to capitalize on technologies, processes, efficiencies, longtime experienced staff and partners, all of which help them meet their client’s demands, which allows them to drive revenue and sleep at night.

They do all this by offering an online, print-on-demand web portal, strategic marketing services, traditional full-color offset printing, various digital printing services such as digital color printing, black-and-white digital printing, high-speed duplicating, large-format color printing, banners, posters, variable-date printing, and direct mail, as well as a complete bindery and finishing department.

Docqmax Digital Printing is a unique and special place. As a second-generation family-owned business, the McKenzie brothers feel privileged to be the owners of this company. They are 100% locally owned and operated and are proud of the fact that over 85% of all the labor, supplies, raw materials, and resources they use to create and manufacture printing are purchased from other locally owned companies that support our local economy.

The mission of Docqmax Digital Printing is to provide the best printing and most helpful service in our community.

How do they do that? First, while they are in the business of printing, they believe that their company produces something much larger than ink and toner on paper. They print your ideas, hopes, and dreams. They take pride in the fact that the documents they create help tell your story and make your business more successful. Finally, they make every effort to be successful, but recognize that they can only accomplish this if they can help you be successful.

Community Foundation of Northeast Georgia

At the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia, everything they do centers around one purpose: improving the world through the power of philanthropy.

On a fundamental level, they do that through managing funds held in trust, donated by individuals, organizations, and businesses. Most funds are donor-advised funds, similar to savings accounts. These funds are pooled for investment purposes, and their income is used to make grants for a wide variety of charitable purposes.

But the Foundation’s goals extend far beyond managing funds. They desire to strengthen the communities they serve in Gwinnett, Northeast Georgia, and beyond by providing leadership, addressing community needs, and assisting individuals and organizations with their charitable giving.

The Basics of Financial Wellbeing, with Andrew Sullivan, Sullivan and Schlieman Wealth Management

The Basics of Financial Wellbeing, with Andrew Sullivan, Sullivan and Schlieman Wealth Management

Andrew Sullivan: A lot of discussions we have with clients in our regular reviews. One I’ve already mentioned earlier is making sure that your beneficiaries on life insurance, retirement accounts, pensions are up-to-date, so that you’ve got that primary and secondary beneficiary. We see this often as a problem, sometimes in a blended family where someone gets divorced, remarried, or a death of a spouse and then gets remarried. We’ve seen cases where the old spouse was named X or deceased. Now the new spouse is cut out of the equation, and it gets into legal wrangling. So make sure your beneficiaries are up to date on these various accounts that you have.

It’s also making sure you’ve got adequate long-term care insurance in place. Just had a client the other day that had to go to an assisted living facility/memory care: $18,000 a month for care, right? And you talk about devastating a set of assets or a portfolio at $18,000 a month. She does not have long-term care insurance. But it’ll rip through some assets very quickly. So you’ve got to be prepared for that.

That’s probably the biggest risk that retirees have. It’s not that I’m going to go on a cruise or that I’m going to retire. It’s that long-term healthcare cost equation. Disability insurance for younger people, and then making sure you have life insurance in place while you have an up-and-coming family independence.

Another one I would say is not having estate planning. This is probably one of the second-biggest issue. It’s amazing how many attorneys I talked to that don’t have wills, powers of attorney in place. So we strongly encourage people to have up-to-date wills and powers of attorney in place.

Having proper liability coverage, property and casualty or umbrella policies in place. So do a property and casualty review with your insurance agent. Very important to do that probably every couple of years.

This is really a dirty word: budget. Most people don’t want to talk about a budget. Unfortunately, I find that most people spend more time planning their vacation than their finances.
But I emphasize a budget, and set goals, and stick to those goals on an annual basis.

And then finally hire the professional, right? If you need counseling and investment advice, or estate planning, any of those things—use a professional. It’s worth the expense. There are people that can manage their own affairs, but most people, again they don’t want to go down that path. And they want to delegate that to someone that’s a professional in those fields.

Workforce Challenges in the Manufacturing Sector

Workforce Challenges in the Manufacturing Sector, with Jim Pursley, Factory Automation Systems

Jim Pursley: It’s still strong. We had some concerns about rising cost of money and economy slowing down.

But we’ve not seen it in a whole slug taking a downward turn just yet, always subject to change. And I think a lot of what’s driving that is still the strong employment numbers. Our business is structured around automation and helping people manufacture things in all types of spaces.

And, traditionally through the years that takes people to do that. And it’s harder and harder these days to find people that you could trust to show up to work every day that have the skills to do that. And especially in the manufacturing space. And so our customers, and the list keeps growing, from beyond the traditional Fortune 500 companies, to Fords and General Motors of the world to smaller organizations that just can’t find the people to do the work.

And so we get calls for “we’ve had this process we’ve done for years. We’re looking for a way to be able to do it. We can’t run the equipment sometimes because we don’t have people to show up to work to do it.” That’s been a big part of our continued success, whether that’s with robotic systems or just any other type of automation system.

And it continues to, to be even as large capital projects, maybe are slowing down. Even a lot of upgrade work with existing customers are taking the opportunities to replace obsolete equipment if they’ve slowed down. And even customers who aren’t seeing growth in their business in manufacturing still need the automation piece to drive costs down and to really backfill where you can’t find the labor.
