What’s Standing in the Way of Your Business Exit?, with Bill McDermott, Host of ProfitSense

Bill McDermott: I want to take a moment right now and ask my business owner audience the question, What’s standing in the way of your business exit? Recent surveys show that 80 percent of business owners will exit their business in the next ten years, yet only 25 percent have created any sort of plans in writing for a successful outcome.

I’m working with quite a few firms that are considering an exit. One situation includes a majority owner who has several partners and maybe discovering those partners don’t think like business owners and may just prefer to remain employees. Another owner is a very successful business. He’s a baby boomer and is ready to retire, but is having a hard time removing himself from day-to-day operations.

So, what are some things that could be standing in the way of our exit? First, the economy. In a recession, the value of a business may decline making it more difficult to sell. Also, if the economy is weak, it may be more difficult to find a buyer. Industry trends. If the industry is declining, the value of a business in that industry may decline. If the industry is changing, it may be difficult to find a buyer who is willing to take on the challenges of a changing industry. Third thing is taxes. This is one component that’s very complex. In almost every case, selling a business for a gain will trigger either capital gains or ordinary income tax.

So, what can we do as owners? Time the sale of our business carefully, plan carefully, and seek advice from your professional advisors, and know that alternatives such as merging with another company also exists. With careful planning and execution, it is possible to sell a business at a fair price, even in challenging economic or industry conditions.

In 2019, after a bankruptcy left her family with nothing, Cristy Kisner; her husband, Sebastian; and their five daughters moved from Peru to Roswell, Georgia, to give them a better future and to fulfill Cristy’s dream of opening a healthy café in the United States.

When the Covid-19 lockdown came, they never closed their doors, working sixteen-hour days for a year. In March 2021, Brandon Stanton, the creator of Humans of New York, became a regular customer and fell in love with the food at the café and Cristy’s incredible story. He wrote about Cristy and sponsored a fundraiser, and her moving story went viral, allowing the family to stay afloat and continue to live their American dream.

The food at Cristy’s Kitchen is gluten-free, dairy-free, organic, nourishing, and thoroughly tasty. Back in Peru, Cristy had developed her recipes after two of her daughters experienced medical issues ranging from allergic rhinitis to digestive problems to an autoimmune disease. They switched to organic ingredients; removed dairy, gluten, and processed foods from their diets; and got each diagnosis under control.

Her daughters’ special packed lunches gained the attention of other parents, and Cristy started teaching classes on healthy food prep, which evolved into the dream of having her own bakery and café serving sweet and savory baked goods, prepared foods, and more, many inspired by favorite ingredients from her native Peru.

She is also the author of a new cookbook by the same name, Cristy’s Kitchen. Cristy provides helpful health information and sources on the more unusual ingredients in the book, including those she’s refined into her celebrated gluten-free baked goods.

Community Foundation of Northeast Georgia

At the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia, everything they do centers around one purpose – improving our world through the power of philanthropy.

Communication is the common thread that runs through Mark Weiss’ life. It started in high school and continued through his days at Ithaca College, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Television-Radio Communications. Mark worked in television stations in Utica, New York, and St. Petersburg, Florida, directing the local newscasts and producing and directing local programming before he moved to Atlanta in 1976 to work at WTCG, Ted Turner’s Superstation.

Mark left the broadcasting industry to work for Georgia Power in 1977 for almost 20 years in the company’s Media Services organization before leaving to form The Renaissance Communications Group (TRCG) in 1996. He formed TRCG to support small and medium-sized businesses to provide marketing, advertising, public relations, and website services.
