Why You're Really Afraid to Raise Your Prices with John Ray, on The Price and Value Journey podcast

Why You’re Really Afraid to Raise Your Prices with John Ray (The Price and Value Journey, Episode 141)

Are you afraid to raise prices? You’re not alone.

Raising your prices isn’t just a financial move. It’s an emotional decision that can stir up fear, doubt, and second-guessing.

In this solo episode of The Price and Value Journey, John Ray explores the five hidden fears that often hold expert-service providers back from charging what their work is truly worth. Whether it’s fear of losing a client relationship, feeling pressure to be perfect, or anxiety about the economy, these concerns are real and often unspoken.

John shares how to move past those fears by focusing on what your clients actually value. He explains why your best pricing insight comes not from what you believe about your work, but from what your clients experience and are willing to pay for.

If raising your prices gives you that knot-in-the-stomach feeling, this episode is for you.

The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of the Business RadioX® podcast network.

Key Takeaways You Can Use from This Episode

  • Fear of raising prices is rarely about money. It’s about identity, rejection, and self-worth.
  • Clients evaluate value, not personal worth. A “no” is not a judgment of you.
  • Perfectionism is a trap. Clients value responsiveness, clarity, and honesty more than flawlessness.
  • Cable news and clickbait headlines can distort your perspective. Trust your clients, not the media.
  • You can make thoughtful exceptions for certain clients without holding your whole business back.
  • The most valuable insights about your worth come from client conversations and feedback.
  • Clients often see more value in your work than you do. Your job is to listen and own it.

The Hidden Value of a Home Inspection with Austin Abernathy, on North Fulton Business Radio with host John Ray

The Hidden Value of a Home Inspection with Austin Abernathy (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 889)

Austin Abernathy, founder of Abernathy Home Inspections, joins host John Ray to explain why every homeowner—not just those buying or selling—should consider a professional home inspection. Austin shares how even brand-new, multi-million-dollar homes can hide serious problems like mold, leaks, structural flaws, and poor workmanship.

Austin talks about the health risks that go undetected, including radon and air quality issues, and why inspections are just as valuable after renovations or big-ticket projects like a new roof. Austin also reflects on the lessons he learned inspecting over 250 homes for Zillow in less than a year and why educating clients, not scaring them, is at the heart of how he operates.

This episode provides practical and insightful advice from a seasoned professional, whether you’re buying, selling, remodeling, or simply seeking peace of mind about your current home.

John Ray is the host of North Fulton Business Radio. The show is produced by John Ray and North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of Business RadioX®, and is recorded inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Key Takeaways from this Episode

  • Home inspections aren’t just for real estate transactions. They can help catch problems early and save thousands down the road.
  • New construction doesn’t mean flawless. Even brand-new homes can have major issues like faulty roofing, water leaks, and mold.
  • Health risks like mold and radon often go undetected. Home inspectors can help uncover hidden dangers to your well-being.
  • Post-project inspections, particularly for roofing, waterproofing, and foundation repairs, can verify the proper execution of work.
  • Ongoing inspections help homeowners maintain value by catching wear and tear or deferred maintenance before it becomes costly.
  • The best inspectors don’t fearmonger; they educate. The best inspectors give clients the information they need to make smart decisions.

Why Value Pricing Still Feels Hard with Alastair Dryburgh, on The Price and Value Journey podcast with host John Ray

Why Value Pricing Still Feels Hard with Alastair Dryburgh (The Price and Value Journey, Episode 140)

Value pricing sounds great in theory. So why does it often fall flat in practice?

In this episode of The Price and Value Journey, pricing strategist and author Alastair Dryburgh joins host John Ray to explore the gap between creating value and getting paid for it. Many professionals know they should price based on results, not time. But when it comes to presenting the proposal, the conversation often unravels.

Alastair shares what’s missing from traditional value pricing advice. He explains how to help clients recognize your impact, why your most valuable work often feels deceptively simple to you (and why that’s the “paradox of genius”), and how to position yourself so competitors fade into the background. He also offers a clear perspective on how AI is reshaping pricing strategy and why clinging to hourly billing can put your business at risk.

This is a practical and honest conversation for professionals who want to price with more confidence and conviction.

The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of the Business RadioX® podcast network.

Key Takeaways from this Episode

  • Why value pricing often breaks down in the sales process
  • How to help clients see and believe in your value
  • The paradox of genius and the implications of why your best work feels like “nothing”

Andrew Clarke, CEO, Sync Up Bookkeeping

Andrew is a casual, fun, nature-loving guy with a passion for numbers and business. With over 45 years of experience working in a multitude of industries, including mortgage banking, aerospace manufacturing, software development, construction project management, food service, and health & wellness, he is ready to help you with your bookkeeping needs.

Andrew has been an advanced user of QuickBooks/Intuit products for more than 30 years! He is adept and extremely knowledgeable about the inner workings of QuickBooks and how it can serve you best in your business.

When he’s not crunching numbers, developing software applications, designing spreadsheets, or using QuickBooks, he loves spending time with his family in the great outdoors. A full-time RVer, traveling the country with his wife, Sheri, and their four-legged fur-child, Loki, Andrew has enjoyed a vast and varied personal and professional life. He has always had an affinity for understanding business from a financial purview by measuring performance through the use of custom-designed financial reporting tools, which he often designs and develops himself.

After a brief two-year retirement period, inspired by his wife, Sheri, he decided to help others in business by providing bookkeeping and consulting services that give them a clear understanding of their financial status. He still enjoys developing custom software from time to time, but right now he wants to focus on helping other small business owners build their businesses by providing them their financial standings in an easy-to-understand format.

Andrew looks forward to establishing a long-lasting relationship by assisting you with your company’s bookkeeping needs.

How to Fix a Broken Sales Process with Dean Nolley, on North Fulton Business Radio with host John Ray

How to Fix a Broken Sales Process with Dean Nolley (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 886)

Many business owners know something is off in their sales, but they wait until growth stalls or declines before seeking help. By then, the problems have usually deepened. In this episode of North Fulton Business Radio, host John Ray sits down with Dean Nolley, founder of Sales Growth Imagination, to explore how companies can rebuild their sales process before it’s too late.

Dean shares the patterns he sees across B2B companies of all sizes: missing sales structure, underused CRMs, founder bottlenecks, and a lack of meaningful sales activity tracking. He explains why a solid sales process is not just a set of steps but a system that connects strategy, people, and technology in a way that supports long-term growth.

Dean also breaks down what makes a sales process repeatable, how to make CRM dashboards actually useful, and how to shift from reactive fixes to proactive leadership. Whether you’re doing all the selling yourself or struggling to scale a sales team, Dean offers a roadmap grounded in experience, not theory.

John Ray is the host of North Fulton Business Radio. The show is produced by John Ray and North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of Business RadioX®, and is recorded inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Key Takeaways from this Episode

  • Most companies wait too long to address sales issues, often after growth has already stalled or reversed.
  • A missing or undocumented sales process is one of the most common and costly problems.
  • Founders who stay in the sales role too long become a bottleneck for growth and scalability.
  • Many businesses have CRMs in place but fail to use them effectively, especially for forecasting and accountability.
  • The right sales process connects strategy, people, and tools in a way that drives consistent results.
  • A repeatable sales system makes onboarding new reps faster and reduces dependency on individual talent.
  • Tracking lead indicators—early-stage activities—is essential for long-term revenue health.
  • A working CRM should reflect what matters most to owners, whether that’s gross margin, deal velocity, or pipeline strength.
  • Dean’s approach involves hands-on implementation, not just advice—he builds systems that last beyond his engagement.
  • Fixing sales is not about chasing quick wins. It’s about laying the groundwork for sustainable, confident growth.

Renée Puvvada on How to Revive a Dead Book and Sell Thousands (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 885)

Most business professionals think writing a book will catapult their visibility and lead to instant credibility and clients. But what happens when the book flops? Renée Puvvada, founder and CEO of Smokin’ Hot Books, joins host John Ray to reveal why most books don’t sell and how to fix them.

Renée shares the exact five-step strategy she used to take her own book from flop to 10,000+ copies sold and $120,000+ in revenue. Whether you’ve written a book already or are thinking about it, this conversation will change how you think about titles, Amazon listings, reviews, and the true business value of a well-positioned book.

Don’t miss this practical, myth-busting conversation that every author-entrepreneur needs to hear.

SPECIAL OFFER for North Fulton Business Radio listeners: if you’re ready to turn your book into a high-performing sales machine, follow this link.

John Ray is the host of North Fulton Business Radio. The show is produced by John Ray and North Fulton Business Radio, LLC, an affiliate of Business RadioX®, and is recorded inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Key Takeaways from this Episode

  • The harsh truth: Most self-published books sell fewer than 250 copies in a lifetime.
  • Success isn’t about the writing. It’s about positioning. A book isn’t just about something; it must be for someone.
  • Your Amazon listing is your real storefront. A professional, conversion-driven Amazon profile (not just a cover and short blurb) is essential.
  • 100 reviews is the magic number. Social proof makes or breaks a book’s credibility.
  • Relaunching works. You can fix a “dead” book by reworking your title, cover, and launch strategy.
  • Use podcasting like a modern book tour. A coordinated podcast release strategy can replicate the buzz of a national launch.
  • Even niche books can thrive. Renée sold 10,000+ copies of a rainwater harvesting guide—a masterclass in targeting.

Katie Moore, Sonal Chandler, Diamond Ford, and Teresa Caro on Trademarks, Cybersecurity, Senior Salon Services, and Leadership (Family Business Radio, Episode 66)

In this episode of Family Business Radio, host Anthony Chen welcomes four dynamic women whose work spans business law, cybersecurity, senior hair salon services, and leadership coaching but whose stories are deeply rooted in family, legacy, and personal mission.

  • Katie Moore, founder of Katherine Moore Law, LLC, shares how childhood exposure to trademark law shaped her path and why intellectual property is essential for growing businesses.

  • Sonal Chandler, founder of Minerva Consulting, opens up about the loss of her father, her pivot from corporate cybersecurity to entrepreneurship, and how small businesses can proactively protect themselves in an age of AI threats.

  • Diamond Ford, founder of Don’t Touch My Hair by Hollywood, shares her journey from childhood beauty salons to creating a luxury experience for seniors, reminding us that dignity and care never grow old.

  • Teresa Caro, founder of Liminist, explains how she helps business owners, and particularly family-led businesses, navigate growth plateaus, generational succession, and team dynamics to build something that lasts.

This episode, spanning from trademarks to transitions, is brimming with practical wisdom and heartfelt insight. Whether you’re building a business, protecting a legacy, or redefining success, these stories will stay with you.

Anthony concludes the show with thoughts on crafting a legacy of memories, reminding us that you can’t buy time or memories.

Family Business Radio is underwritten and brought to you by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network. The show is produced by John Ray and the North Fulton affiliate of Business RadioX®.

Key Takeaways from This Episode

Katie Moore, Katherine Moore Law, LLC

  • Trademarks protect the identity, value, and recognition your business builds, not just your logo.
  • You don’t have to wait to register. “Intent to use” filings can reserve your rights as you grow.
  • Descriptive names are weak trademarks; creative, distinctive names offer stronger protection.

Sonal Chandler, Minerva Consulting

  • Small businesses are attractive targets for hackers due to limited cybersecurity defenses.
  • Basic protections like strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and staff training go a long way.
  • Don’t just chase AI tools. Focus on how they fit your business strategy and strengthen operations.

Diamond Ford, Don’t Touch My Hair by Hollywood

  • Seniors want luxury, dignity, and routine in their grooming just like anyone else.
  • Salon environments using nostalgic music and décor create healing, memory-rich experiences for aging clients.
  • Stories from elders—like a 110-year-old who said “right now” is the best time to be alive—remind us to live gratefully and stay present.

Teresa Caro, Liminist

  • Founders often become the bottleneck to growth when they don’t shift leadership mindsets.
  • Succession planning can take seven or more years. Start before you feel “ready.”
  • Build a business that can thrive without you; systems and strategy matter more than solo effort.
