Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

  • Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.
  • Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We have produced 4 editions of this print magazine. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips. Our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication, however the magazine is currently on hold as we explore graphic designers. Our latest edition can still be found on our website.
  • Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2018, our conference will be held on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at Sanders Beach.
  • Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

Women in Leadership radio podcast show – sponsored by Pensacola Business Radio X. We hold monthly shows featuring local community leaders and other men and women in business. We engage our guests in conversational style in-depth interviews.

We had the honor to meet with a delegation of business women from Russia last week. It inspired some amazing conversations. I wanted to pass on the news! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out! Thank you for your consideration in running this.

PENSACOLA BUSINESS WOMEN MEET WITH RUSSIAN DELEGATION ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP

June 2018

Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast discussed women entrepreneurship with Congressionally sponsored Open World Program

At the invitation of the Gulf Coast Citizen Diplomacy Council, Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast met with a group of 6 women entrepreneurs from Russia visiting Pensacola through the Congressional sponsored Open World Program. This program brings emerging leaders from participating countries to the United States in order to give them firsthand exposure to the American system of participatory democracy and free enterprise.

The women from Russia were in their 30s and are business owners or hold positions equivalent to higher-level management and were from various areas of Russia. They were in Pensacola for the week and met with Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast (PWGC) and several other local organizations and businesses for conversations about women in business or entrepreneurship.

Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast’s mission is to promote, advance, and improve women in business and about a third of their membership is entrepreneurs. The conversation included an introduction of PWGC, how they started and how they operate by Founding Director, Kolleen Edwards Chesley. PWGC was able to include several advocates of their organization in the conversation including: Michelle Salzman of Salz Studio (PWGC member), Kaila Barrington of Levin Rinke Realty (PWGC Board Member), and Margie Kalaluhi of Heart Centered Wellness (PWGC member and Board Member). These ladies shared their experience with PWGC, spotlighted their own businesses, their passion for women-helping-women and they talked about their thoughts of women in business.

Margie Kalaluhi, commented, “It’s an honor to have been invited into this conversation. I have been involved with PWGC for 13 years and to be able to discuss what a women’s organization dedicated to business development has done for me and my business with women from Russia who hold such high positions in business in their own country was amazing.” The women from Russia shared their experiences and talked about what is available in Russia for business women. One of the Russian women is alumni from the largest business school in Russia, another is on the board for a large women’s business organization, and they all shared a passion for women’s leadership and women supporting other women.

Michelle Salzman added, “Having a community conversation with the purpose of sharing our views on how we can work better together as women and how to support all women in business is exciting; however to share that with women from across the globe really took it to the next level.” Kolleen Edwards Chesley added, “Conversations like this one help us to be proud of what we have in our community and inspire us all to continue to grow and make our communities even better.”

  • Community Service

Every afterschool program is structured in collaboration with schools to ensure that we are supporting their goals and complementing the education that its students are getting during the school day.

Camp Fire’s highly trained, caring staff encourage every child or teen to manage their time in a way that aligns with their passions and talents. Our staff also gather youth input to incorporate in activities so they can better engage them each day.

Camp Fire Wise Kids® / Wise Kids Outdoors ®

Our health and wellness programs use the simple theory of “energy in = energy out” to teach kids of all ages how to eat healthy and live a healthy lifestyle.

InterACTION

Good communication is hard to find but critical to anyone’s success. This program focuses on developing strong communication skills with peer groups and adults as well as learning healthy ways to resolve conflict.

Club Programs

Traditional club programs are offered by some Camp Fire councils and are what most of our alumnae from Camp Fire Girls remember fondly. Club pairs a trained, volunteer leader with a group of youth who work through a Camp Fire curriculum before or after school. Clubs typically go on field trips, undertake service projects, and do other activities to earn badges and learn life skills.

ABOUT 1 MILLION CUPS
Based on the notion that entrepreneurs discover solutions and engage with their communities over a million cups of coffee, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation developed 1 Million Cups in 2012—a free program designed to educate, engage and inspire entrepreneurs around the country. Through the power of volunteers, 1 Million Cups has grown to more than 180 communities.

As a program of the Kauffman Foundation, 1 Million Cups works with entrepreneurs, empowering them with the tools and resources to break down barriers that stand in the way of starting and growing their businesses. Mr. Kauffman believed it was a fundamental right for anyone who had a big idea to be able to bring it to life—and we’re here to fulfill that mission.

OUR CULTURE
Diversity, equity and inclusion are key to the success of our programs. Nationwide, 1 Million Cups communities aim to present an inclusive and supportive front door to their local entrepreneurial ecosystems. These qualities are essential for 1MC to fulfill its mission to educate, engage and connect entrepreneurs with their communities. And they are too essential to leave to chance as the number of 1MC communities continues to grow.

ABOUT THE KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION
Founded by Ewing Marion Kauffman, the Foundation is driven to provide uncommon ways to create opportunities and connect people to the tools they need to achieve success, change their futures and give back to their communities. We believe that if you have an idea, you have a fundamental right to start a business to make it a reality.

We also believe that opportunity lies in the fields of education and entrepreneurship. Our team is based in Kansas City and made up of connectors and doers who dream big, solve problems with the communities we serve and take calculated risks to drive results.

Kelly Reeser

Kelly Reeser serves as the Director of Entrepreneurial Development for FloridaWest Economic Development Alliance.    In this role, Kelly is tasked with supporting our region’s high-growth entrepreneurs with both startup and growth strategies.  She accomplishes this goal by managing the Gulf Coast Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship- an innovation and technology-based incubator, partnering with local entrepreneurs to host Startup Weekend Pensacola, ITEN Wired and by coordinating entrepreneurial efforts with community partners.

Kelly currently serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement and The Global Corner, and is a member of the International Business Innovation Association.  She was a member of the Leadership Pensacola Class of 2013 and also serves as a volunteer with middle school students at Olive Baptist Church.

Kelly holds a Master of Arts degree in Development Management & Public Policy from Georgetown University and bachelor degrees in Spanish & Latin American Studies from Southern Methodist University.  She is a native of Pensacola, an avid traveler and loves being a mom—she enjoys spending time with her husband, Chris, daughter, Evangelina, and baby boy, Elliot.

Jim Rhodes

Jim has actively participated in the planning of the annual ITEN Wired Summit since 2012 and is in his 5th year serving as its director.

He is a native of Pensacola and a graduate of Tate High School and the University of West Florida, where he received his degree in finance. He moved to Charlotte, NC in 1997 with a goal of furthering his career in banking, but later developed a passion for information technology. Upon graduating ECPI College of Technology, he officially entered into the world of IT in 2001. After working several years as a network engineer, he and his family relocated back to Pensacola in 2007.

Jim has been employed by AppRiver since 2008 and currently manages the mobile solutions team which provides mobile device support for a global customer base of almost 300,000 users. He also serves as an advisor to the board of directors for IT Gulf Coast and as a board member for Innovation Coast.

He is married and has two sons. He enjoys golfing, kayaking, and fishing.

OUR MISSION

Guns To Hammers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides our wounded veterans with Americans With Disabilities (ADA)-compliant remodeling and renovation services, making their homes easily accessible, helping them live independent and manageable lives.

After founding H-Towne & Around Remodelers, Inc., a successful remodeling company in Houston, Texas, founder, JR Smith, decided to redirect his time, money and energy toward this mission. As a former U.S. Marine, coupled with some guilt that he was able to leave the USMC unhurt and able-bodied (unlike many), JR feels he has a huge sense of responsibility to his wounded brothers and sisters who are now living at home — many of them in need of various home improvements.

Your donation will help make this happen, sponsoring veterans across the United States, transforming homes — opening doors and possibilities — to our veterans who need it most. Many of our veterans made huge sacrifices to protect our freedoms — it’s our responsibility to ensure they are never left behind. Donate, today.

Culinary Fight Club brings the passion of a high-energy kitchen and the thrill of a timed competition for you to enjoy. No two events are the same, with new teams and themes every month, we promise you’ll come back for seconds.

cooking up some good

Culinary Fight Club is a national organization that hosts live cooking competitions.  At each event, attendees watch as contestants from home cooks to executive chefs race for their pantry in 45 seconds.  Contestants get to choose from 15 provided  ingredients. From there, contestants have 60 minutes to create the most gourmet dish that represents their take on our monthly theme. The audience and judges vote and decide on a winning dish.

Aside from being an incredibly fun event, Culinary Fight Club events exclusively give back to the           501(c) (3) non profit organization Fight2Feed, an organization that partners top restaurants with food trucks to provide service and support to hungry men, women and children in our communities.

Our Mission

We help local business leaders get the word out about the important work they’re doing to serve their market, their community, and their profession.

We support and celebrate business by sharing positive business stories that traditional media ignores. Some media leans left. Some media leans right. We lean business.
