Leta Brooks/Status Home Design

Hey everyone! Thanks for joining me here at “Status Life with Leta“.

I’m Leta and I’m the a mother of two amazing minis, soon to be a stepmother of two others, a vendor boutique owner, interior designer, blogger, and podcaster. That’s all on paper (well more on the computer nowadays). What I’m passionate about is helping people create spaces they love, traveling the world, and encouraging others to live their best life. I guess I should have started by saying I love God, religion, and spirituality. I call myself a seeker and I can’t get enough knowledge about the world. I would give anyone the shirt off my back, but I’ll also be the first to set anyone straight. It’s a quality that can rub many the wrong way. I say what I mean and I wear my emotions for all to see. I don’t apologize for it. That’s all me and also, why I’m here. I want to motivate and encourage others to live their best life. “Status Life with Leta” is the place for all of us to share stories, get inspiration, and find purpose in life. You can ask me questions about anything. I may not be an expert on everything, but I’m here to help and willing to try. My journey hasn’t always been easy, but through faith and perseverance, I continue to design my life. Stay here with me and let’s continue to #designalifeyoulove.

Judge Tracie Cason and Rick Strawn

Tracie Cason/Gwinnett Superior Court Judge

Tracie Cason serves as a Superior Court Judge in Gwinnett County presiding over Division 2. Judge Cason handles felony criminal cases, domestic and family law cases, and civil disputes. She was elected in 2018 in a contested county-wide election.

Judge Cason is committed to providing fair and impartial justice to all who appear before her. She wants citizens to know that they will always be heard in her courtroom. Before being elected to the Gwinnett County Superior Court, Tracie was a career prosecutor with the Gwinnett District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Cason’s judicial philosophy is based on keeping our community safe for everyone, especially the most vulnerable, and ensuring everyone is heard when it’s their day in court. Victims have rights, and so do the accused, and everyone’s rights must be protected and balanced to achieve justice for all. She also looks at root causes and how to prevent repeat offenses. She believes that accountability programs can help many non-violent offenders more than simple punishment, and preventing repeat offenses keeps everyone safer.

Tracie and her husband David have been married 14 years, and live with their dogs, Munson, Dooley, Erk, and Emma. She is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia and Baylor University School of Law and hopes to return to Athens for most Saturdays this fall.

The podcast topic “Achieving Systemness: Competitive Challenges” explores how Lee Health has navigated through the pandemic, and some of the key learnings as they emerge into the post-pandemic healthcare environment. Dr. Nygaard shares his perspective and insights on this important topic, providing practical suggestions from which all healthcare leaders could benefit.

Roger Spoelman, DBA, MBA

Roger is a healthcare executive with more than 38 years of industry experience. He most recently served as interim CEO at Trinity Health Regional Systems in New England, Ohio, and Illinois at Loyola University Health System.

His tenure at Trinity Health included leading several hospital mergers, and later as regional executive for the corporation’s Mercy Health operations. He also is founder and executive sponsor of the Trinity Health Innovation Hub. In 2018, Roger oversaw the merger of International Aid Inc. and CURE International Inc., two organizations where he served on the Board of Directors for over a decade. He recently served as the President and CEO for CURE International Inc., which operates eight charitable hospitals in developing nations, and focuses on faith-based care that restores quality of life to pediatric patients with surgically treatable disabilities. Roger was appointed Chair of the BAMF Health board of directors in 2019. He is working closely with the company to achieve their patent-focused mission of bringing intelligence-based precision medicine to the world.

Charles (Chuck) Peck, MD, FACS

Prior to joining Guidehouse, Chuck served as CEO of Piedmont Athens Regional Health System, on the board of Vizient Southern States, partner at a global healthcare consulting firm responsible for the clinical operations practice; CEO of a 150 physician group multi-specialty practice; president of the southeast and northeast regions of a large national health insurance carrier; chief medical officer of a start-up retail health clinic operator; chief medical officer/chief operations officer of a national disease management company; and CEO of an ambulatory surgery center and physician services company.

Chuck is a co-host of the Baldrige Foundation Leader Dialogue program and provides mentoring and thought leadership insights to numerous organizations and leaders across the country on a variety of operational, financial, and leadership topics.

Ben Sawyer, MBA, PT, OCS, LBB

Ben started his healthcare career in 1985 as a Physical Therapist, focusing on sports medicine and orthopedics, and received his specialist certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) in 1997 from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

After securing his MBA, he moved into hospital administration, overseeing rehab, wellness, cardiac therapy, and occupational medicine services, specializing in team development and performance optimization. This expanded into a system leadership role overseeing performance and quality improvement. During that time Ben achieved his Lean Black Belt certification (LBB)

Ben has a gift for recognizing strategic gaps that can be turned into opportunities. For example, during the COVID-19 crisis he initiated national executive roundtables with the Baldrige Foundation via the Leader Dialogue program to help executives turn the pandemic disruption into an opportunity for improved collaboration and performance towards true Community Health beyond the walls of hospitals and to prioritize and coordinate action and resources.

Celebrating Powerhouse Women salutes and recognizes women who are making an impact, whether it’s in business, philanthropy, public service, or elsewhere.

Laura Ballance/Hudgens Center for Art & Learning

Laura Ballance, who has grown a reputation for creative thinking, development and innovation within the arts community, was named Executive Director of the Hudgens Center for Art and Learning in Duluth, GA in April 2020. An Atlanta native, Laura attended the Galloway School and graduated from Georgia State University. She launched her career in arts management more than twenty years ago, coordinating the community education programs at Atlanta College of Art on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center. By 2005, Laura had transitioned to Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, launching SCAD’s first continuing education program, which later expanded to SCAD’s Savannah location. She also directed SCAD Atlanta’s summer art camps, pre-college programs, art educator conferences, and other non-degree programming initiatives for the college. Additionally, Laura was responsible for coordinating The College Board’s Advanced Placement curriculum training sessions for high school educators of studio art and art history.

She planned the 2009 National Arts Honors Society, a multi-day conference, exhibition and awards ceremony for more than 400 students and their families. In 2010, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Art Education Association. In her final five years with SCAD, Laura served as assistant director for enrollment events and programs, and had oversight of a variety of student and community engagement opportunities.

In 2017, after losing her younger sister to ALS, Laura went to work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Atlanta. As a development specialist with MDA, she was responsible for the organization’s signature Night of Hope Gala that raised approximately $1 million annually for ALS clinical trials, research and patient care. She also managed the MDA Muscle Walk, an annual fundraising event for which she drove an increase in sponsorships of more than 50 percent in her first year. During her tenure with MDA, Laura created new programs to engage the community and raise awareness for neuromuscular diseases, like ALS.

Laura remains active with the MDA and now serves on the Night of Hope Gala planning committee. She is also a member of the advisory council for Gwinnett County’s new School of the Arts, which opened its doors in August 2021.
