BRX Pro Tip: Using Interview Skills at Your Networking Events Transcript
Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton, Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, when you host your own radio show, it opens up just an incredible world for you. One of the ways in which it does that is you really can leverage your interviewing skills at a networking event. Speak to that a little bit.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:22] Sure. Networking events for me were kind of things I dreaded, me being an introvert and not like kind of a people person that likes to make small talk. But I realized that one of the unintended consequences of having a radio show and interviewing so many people is I’m good at interviewing people. And when I’m in a networking event, I just kind of put on my interviewer hat and then, I’d just start using active listening, I start asking questions.
Lee Kantor: [00:00:49] And then, my fallback position, if I’m ready for the thing to be over is I invite them on a show in some future point or give them the link to go to, to book themselves on the show. So, I use these skills all the time. And then, networking events were things that I were totally uncomfortable, would kind of nine times out of 10 talk myself out of going to one, because I didn’t want to make small talk or felt awkward. And now, I feel pretty confident in those kinds of environments, because I know I can just put my interviewer hat on and ask some questions and sit back and listen. And the person I’m talking to will do all the heavy lifting and answer the questions.
