Pat O’Rourke/Practice Quotient

Patrick O’Rourke of Practice Quotient began his career at a dental and vision insurance company in Florida, which after several acquisitions and mergers, is now MetLife. He spent five years at Humana in Atlanta selling in the large group segment (100+ employees). He was responsible for all lines of insurance coverage for these groups including fully-insured and self-funded (ASO) medical, dental, life, disability, stop loss, pharmacy (PBM), wellness, and worksite/voluntary portfolio. It seemed that spiraling group healthcare costs pushed ancillary lines into the periphery. This tendency became magnified after the PPACA paradigm shift that left everyone on information overload. He positioned himself as an industry resource by earning several certifications, including Disability (DIA) and Dental (DBA). Understanding the nuances involved with all aspects of risk management helped business partners rely on his expertise to guide client recommendations. He is an insurance insider that has built dental networks, worked in operations management, designed plans, and opened markets. This allows him to provide valuable insights to his dental practice clients.

Mary Becker/Best Deal Movers

Best Deal Movers began as a dream that Mary’s son David had. He, along with two of his brothers, had worked at moving companies during the summer when they were home from college. In the spring of his sophomore year, David injured his arm while pitching on the college baseball team. When surgery and rehab did not bring the necessary results to be able to continue in the sport, David had to reconsider what he wanted to do. He brought the idea for a moving company to his dad, and Best Deal Movers was born. They started with one truck and an office in their home. The business has continued to grow. Today they have seven trucks and are continuing to expand. They are proud to provide excellent service to their clients, having been chosen to receive The Best of Kudzu Awards for the past three years and having been voted by Angie’s List members to receive their Super Service Award for 2013 and 2014.

Nick Patel/Salsarita’s

At Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina, they’re building a dynamic and authentically inspired fast casual Mexican brand, offering delicious food that is made the way you want it and prepared every day in-house. From wildly addictive chips that their guests truly rave about, to queso, customized burritos, tacos, salads, bowls, quesadillas, nachos, signature salsas and fresh-made guacamole, Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina thrives on making great Mexican fare fresh daily. Since their beginnings in Charlotte, NC in 2000, they have worked to perfect the notion that a restaurant should not only be fast and friendly, but also casual and delicious like no other. Today, they have locations in 19 states and are rapidly growing.

Chef Joe Abston, owner of Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen & Taproom and The Tin Cow, oversees the culinary direction of Pot Roast & Pinot and Edible Invaders. A Pensacola Tate High School graduate homegrown chef learned the right way. Chef Abston started his culinary training at PJC before graduating from the culinary elite Johnson and Wales University, building the foundation for his epicurean adventure.  Humbly Joe applied his education working around the world diversifying his culinary portfolio in such great places as the Ritz-Carlton and Le Bec Fin. Starting in 2008 Joe focused his energies in the downtown Pensacola area – a then small foodie scene. One of the earlier downtown revitalization pioneers, Joe was pivotal on the growth of the downtown area, and continues to further the downtown scene advocating for Gallery Night and chairing the up & coming Palafox Wine Walk. Chef Abston isn’t done yet with more exciting concepts early in the planning stages.

Have Wind Will Travel

I was a lawyer until I quit. Six years in the practice taught me two very important things — 1) I love to write (while it was motions, briefs, and arguments then, I still knew I had uncovered my passion in the written word), but 2) I don’t like to do it in an office. Something told me I needed to get away, to travel, to sail, to live a different day every day and write about all of it. I now write full-time and spend the majority of my days cruising our 35-foot Niagara sailboat around Florida’s west coast, the ongoing adventures of which I chronicle on my sailing blog, www.havewindwilltravel.com, and sailing books available on Amazon. I hope you lose yourself in my stories, find yourself in my characters and relish every page. I will keep writing and sailing regardless. It beats the practice at least. Enjoy!

Amazon Author Page — http://www.amazon.com/Annie-Dike/e/B00T25NBVO

Curious about cruising?  Come aboard!  I write to share the stories and I film to share the journey with you. Sign up to follow via the blog, YouTube or Facebook and get videos, blogs and books on cruising, kite-surfing, silks and every adventure in between. If you enjoy the journey, check out my books on Amazon, show some love with a weekly donation through Patreon or just share it with others and let us know. We love to hear from followers and send them free cool stuff. Email or message me on Facebook. Get inspired. Get on board.

New York Nick’s

New York Nick’s in Downtown Pensacola was recently named “The Best Sports Bar in Pensacola.” It’s no surprise, since the walls are literally inundated with 40 high-definition flat-screen TVs playing anything from water polo to hockey. They also have every sports package known to man, so if you’re not into football you can find something. Rhythmic gymnastics anyone?

But, ribbon dancing aside; during the Super Bowl I can imagine no better place in town to watch the game. Pensacola is located a mere three hours away from New Orleans and so, it seems, the locals have a soft spot for The Saints. My boyfriend, a native of Louisiana, was at first perplexed by Pensacola’s unabashed support of another state’s NFL team. But who are we going to cheer for? Jacksonville located on the other side of the state? Pass.

So New York Nick’s will undoubtedly be filled as the Saints (and pardon this pun) go marching into the Super Bowl (Ba Dum Ching!). And while there are plenty of franchises that cater to the sports crowd in Pensacola, nothing beats this one-of-a-kind place. Great bar specials all day long and an extensive menu keep this place busy, even during the off-season. They’re famous for their char-grilled wings but there burgers are amazing too. Try the “Best Damn Buffalo Chicken Sandwich Period” or the “Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich” if you want to switch it up a little. They even offer a children’s menu and all the usual bar fare favorites; cheesy fries, onion rings and nachos. Get here early on game day to stake out your table and be prepared to stay for the long haul. But I promise you, you won’t go hungry.”

Federico “Fred” Castellucci/Castellucci Hospitality Group

President

11885161_1622313944695266_6855702729144203255_nA graduate of the Hospitality School at Cornell University, Federico Castellucci has worked in the restaurant business his entire life. During his tenure at Cornell, Federico helped create and develop the original Sugo in Roswell. He grew the concept to four locations including three franchises. After graduating in 2007, Federico took over a failed franchise location that is currently Sugo in Johns Creek, Ga. Federico worked tirelessly to re-establish the brand, and within a year and a half the restaurant had become the most successful restaurant his family had ever owned in Georgia.

Building on that success, Federico created a new restaurant concept from scratch in downtown Decatur called The Iberian Pig. A modern Spanish restaurant with a strong focus on imported Spanish cured meats, fresh local produce, creative tapas dishes, wines of the region and classic cocktails, The Iberian Pig has been a hit from opening night in late 2009.

Following the success of The Iberian Pig, Federico embarked on two more projects in 2011 and 2014. Located on Roswell Road near I-285, Double Zero Napoletana opened in May 2011, bringing the regional cuisine of Campania in Southern Italy to Sandy Springs, Ga. The menu features handmade pasta, traditional Neapolitan pizza, handmade pastries and gelato, as well as contemporary takes on classic Southern Italian dishes. In November 2014, Federico opened Cooks & Soldiers, a Basque-inspired concept located in West Midtown, featuring traditional pintxos, raciones, asador and desserts influenced by the signature cooking methods of the region.

Federico currently serves as president of Castellucci Hospitality Group, the management company that he created in 2010, which includes Sugo, The Iberian Pig, Double Zero Napoletana and Cooks & Soldiers.

Jaime Foster/Georgia Grinders

President

11707603_1611422049117789_8977223185474582731_nAfter more than a dozen years of climbing the corporate ladder, Jaime Foster decided to leave Corporate America in 2012 and pursue her entrepreneurial aspirations of launching NaturAlmond.  The recipe for  NaturAlmond was based on her grandfather’s prized Almond Butter that he started making in the 1970’ s as part of an initiative to combat his genetic predisposition for Cardiac Disease.  Using only the highest quality almonds and natural sea salt, Grandpa Hinsdale perfected the ideal roasting and grinding process to create this  delicious product.  With the encouragement of family and friends, Foster began the company with the Original Almond Butter recipe in early 2012 and through tireless efforts  personally selling the product to stores and at Farmer’s Markets, NaturAlmond was greeted with tremendously positive response, production steadily increased and the product became available in grocery stores and gourmet retailers nationwide. “Instead of outsourcing production to a copacker, we made the decision early on to create our very own state of the art commercial kitchen in Atlanta.  This investment allows us to maintain control over the production process and ensure that our almond butter is produced with the finest quality products and in small batches,” reflects Foster.  “These key differentiators provide us with a much higher caliber product and therefore a competitive advantage,” Foster concludes. As a result of customer feedback, in July of 2013, Foster added three additional NaturAlmond flavors; Honey Roasted, MapleCaramel and a SaltFree version.

Soon after adding these additional flavors, NaturAlmond was featured in  Oprah’s Magazine on “The OList,” which dramatically increased national exposure  and as a result, online sales. As the result of her tireless efforts and passion to create the highest quality small batch nut butters, Foster, 38, dramatically increased the size of her Atlanta area production facility, creating a completely separate facility for the production of  other types of nut butters, beginning with Peanut Butter, under the new company moniker, Georgia Grinders. Georgia Grinders has embarked on plans for product expansion in the future, beginning with the introduction of Cashew Butter and Individual Squeeze Packets of  NaturAlmond Butter and Peanut Butter in the first quarter of 2015. With her hand crafted nut butters in all of The Fresh Market stores nationally as well as Whole Foods in the Southeast and Florida Regions, 100 Kroger stores and include Sprouts Farmer’s Markets, as well as The Central Market stores in Texas.  In addition, hundreds of specialty gourmet retailers across the country feature this hand crafted nut butters, proving Foster to be a dynamic force in the  gourmet food arena.  In addition to creating the highest quality craft Almond and Peanut Butters, Georgia Grinders also sells Naturalmond Almond Flour, which is available online as well.  For more information about Jaime Foster, NaturAlmond and Georgia Grinders, please visit www.georgiagrinders.com.

Fabrice Vergez/F&B Atlanta

Owner

11745836_1611422269117767_1353085161845778976_nFabrice Vergez brings more than 29 years of industry experience to his role as co-owner of F&B Atlanta.  Vergezs affair with the restaurant and hospitality industry began in the early 80s in Cannes, France. Vergez started his work as a busboy at the Carlton Hotel, but soon worked his way up to a maitred position. As Vergez gained experience, he knew that if he wanted to grow his career he would need to improve his English. It was with this in mind that he decided to leave the hotel that had taught him so much and move to England to work at the Mendip Lodge Hotel in Summerset. After spending six months at the Mendip, Vergez was ready to make a move.  He first settled in Florida where he waited tables for the Chefs de France in Orlando. It was not more than a year later when Vergez was ready for more opportunity. Hungry to build his career, he moved to New York City. Shortly thereafter Vergez caught wind of a French restaurant scheduled to open in the city, so he applied for a job. Vergez was offered the position and became part of the original staff that opened the iconic, Le Bernardin. Throughout those nine years Vergez dedicated himself to the restaurant tirelessly learning the ins and outs of the industry.  Apparent that Vergez was ready for the next step in his career, the Le Cozes approached him about becoming the front man to their brasserie in Atlanta, called Brasserie Le Coze. In 1994 he packed up his bags and headed back down South to run the French restaurant. Vergez did not disappoint. He built up the location housed in Lenox Mall to become the French dining experience in Atlanta. In 2004 he chose to purchase the restaurant from Maguy Le Coze. Vergez had two strong years running the business as owner before Neiman Marcus was granted expansion rights and Brasserie Le Coze was forced to close their doors.  This was not the end of Brasserie Le Coze, but Vergez decided he would take this time to reinvent the restaurant. A year later, he and his team found an ideal space to open up a more modern version of Le Coze in downtown Atlanta. Vergez transformed a 15,000 square-foot space into an authentic French-American bistro called F.A.B. Over the next four years F.A.B.s delectable French cuisine brought Le Coze natives and celebrities alike to the downtown location.  In 2011 the building that housed F.A.B was purchased. Vergez and life partner Cindy Brown decided this was their chance to bring French cuisine back to Buckhead F&B Atlanta, a rustic neighborhood bistro, was born.

Guy Thomson/Pittypat’s Porch

Owner

11391496_1603563743236953_3297195415810193223_nFor 23 years, Guy Thomson led Proof of the Pudding through a period of growth and development that has resulted in Proof’s current position as Atlanta’s premier “Upscale Food Service Management” company. As the managing partner, Thomson began his tenure when Proof was a small boutique caterer with just one exclusive contract, The Carter Presidential Center.  When he sold his interest in the company in 2013 and turned over the reins to his main partner’s son, Proof had become a much more varied food service management company specializing in off premise catering; exclusive contracts in business, convention, sports, concert, and resort venues; an airport kiosk food concept; and a Gourmet to Go division that provides creative culinary products to go. Thomson now serves as a marketing consultant for Proof, and the company continues to be highly regarded in the Atlanta business and social community as it grows and prospers in this new era of leadership.

Thomson is also the owner of Atlanta’s oldest restaurant, Pittypat’s Porch, an authentic, southernthemed 300 seat restaurant located in the heart of downtown. Famous throughout the world, Pittypat’s Porch continues to serve its delicious southern cuisine in a comfortable, old fashioned/old south atmosphere, by many long term staffers renowned for their friendly and efficient service. He has recently overseen and completed a major face lift and renovation that includes an outdoor porch and southern mansion façade.

Prior to joining Proof of the Pudding, Thomson served as the senior vice president of the Georgia Hospitality and Travel Association (GHTA), the trade association representing Georgia’s food service, lodging and travel industries and related businesses. During his career with GHTA, he served in various capacities with responsibilities in membership sales and services, educational programming, and operation of the Southeastern Hospitality and Food Service Show and Atlanta International Wine Festival. Thomson moved to Atlanta in 1977 as general manager for Victoria Station Restaurants, a California based specialty restaurant chain.

Thomson has served as the Chairman of the Southeastern Chapter of the National Association of Exposition Managers (NAEM), and has earned the Certified Exposition Managers’ designation. He is a member of the Advisory Board and past Chairman of the Board of The Atlanta Community Food Bank’s ‘Atlantas’ Table,’ an organization that collects prepared but not served food from restaurants and other food service operation and distributes it to the agencies that feed the homeless and hungry of Atlanta. Thomson also serves on the boards of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Georgia State University School of Hospitality.

An active Member of the Ansley Golf Club for many years, Thomson has recently completed a term of service on the Club’s Board of Directors and had a significant leadership role in a major renovation of its food and beverage facilities. He and his wife Deb, a successful retail executive, are devoted members of the Holy Family Catholic Church where they live in the East Cobb section of Marietta. They have two grown children, Will and Kate, and spend as much time as they can at their beach home at Fripp Island, South Carolina.
