Paul Lopez / Element Funding Linkedin

Dr. Lopez is a Co-Founder and Managing Principal of Element Funding, a residential mortgage lender with branches across Georgia, Florida and North Carolina (www.elementfunding.com) that has served over 18,000 families with $3 billion in mortgage financing since opening as a startup business in the summer of 2007 when the housing industry was not the place to be!

In his corporate career, Paul was Executive Vice President of Business Development & Sales at HomeBanc Mortgage Corporation. Prior to that, he was employed in high tech for 20 years at IBM and Xerox in field and headquarters positions, and has been a faculty member at the business schools of Kennesaw State University and California State University.

Paul is highly involved in the community, currently serving on the boards of MUST Ministries and Action Ministries, and co-chairs the TiE-Atlanta chapter’s Entrepreneurship Competition for universities across Georgia.

Dr. Lopez holds a doctorate in business administration from Louisiana Tech University, and an MBA from the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Jeff Patterson / SBDC at Georgia State University

Jeff has extensive financial industry experience that includes leadership roles in credit administration, commercial lending, operations management, regulatory compliance, and audit administration. His expertise includes loan proposal and business plan preparation, cash flow management, budgeting, and customer satisfaction. He also has brokerage and financial planning training as well as his Commercial Lending Diploma from RMA. He received his MBA from Brenau University.

In this show, Richard Fletcher and Doug Samuels will discuss what’s new in the programming offered by the Greater Atlanta Chapter of ASTD this year, along with what is staying the same.

Richard Fletcher/Zaxby’s

Richard Fletcher, CHT is Sr. Director, Learning and Organizational Development for Zaxby’s Franchising, a franchisor of gourmet chicken restaurants with 550+ locations and 20,000 employees throughout the Southeast. He has been with Zaxby’s since 2003. Richard has responsibilities for overseeing the structures, systems, and processes within the organization to improve organizational effectiveness and is also responsible for identifying, recommending and implementing short and long term strategy for design development and delivery of leadership, team-related, professional, and interpersonal skills development programs.

Richard has over 25 years of executive level experience in sales, operations, organizational development and training with other national companies such as Wolf Camera, Zaxby’s and Sprint PCS.

Richard is a national member of ASTD and President-Elect for the Greater Atlanta chapter. He is an active member of the Council for Hotel and Restaurant Trainers (CHART) and Regional Director for the CHART’s Atlanta Regional Training Forum.

Richard received a Bachelor of Science degree from Auburn University. He is a certified EQ-I, EQ-360 administrator and has received the Certified Hospitality Trainer (CHT) certification from CHART. When he isn’t busy developing people, he loves hitting the links and traveling.

Doug Samuels/Georgia State University

Doug Samuels is Manager, Organizational Development & Consulting Services at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. His focus is on developing leadership bench strength and improving employee engagement throughout the university and across the University System of Georgia (USG). He uses the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence as a process framework.

Doug’s professional career in learning and development has taken him around the world. After flying KC- 135s (Boeing 707) for many years, he served as a Master Instructor at the USAF’s Navigator Training School and later created and delivered the military’s first software engineering training program. He was selected to direct the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Ada Software Engineering Education and Training Program, created to ensure the Ada programming language was used in all mission-critical software development across the military. He received the DOD Meritorious Service Medal for his efforts.

Previously, Doug served as the Director, Training and Development in a Fortune 50 company and Director, Organization Development at a burgeoning Fortune 1000 company. He holds a BS in Mathematics from Valdosta State College, a BS in Computer Science from Chapman University, an MEd in Adult Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, a BA in Psychology and MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Valdosta State University.

Matt Lynch is the Director of Guest Services for the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Matt is a high performing operations-management executive with 10+ years of expertise in building/optimizing organizational process, measurement systems, programs and support systems to maximize business results in the hospitality and broadcast industry.

Matt has established success in the Guest Experience sector with 5+ years of experience designing the guest experience for a professional sports team including the oversight of all selection, training and empowerment processes for all staff. He also has extensive experience in the coaching of senior leaders on the processes and systems behind high performing organizations including a focus on strategic planning, customer focus, people and leadership development and results.

Mary Blackmon/USA Farm Stars

USA Farm Stars CEO and founder Mary Blackmon is a 3rd generation farmer from Arkansas. She has lived in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta and pursued a successful career in publishing and advertising, working for Wired, Walt Disney Internet Group and Vivendi-Universal Internet Group. She founded the first national discount site for the spa & wellness industry, Spa-Addicts.com in 2002.

In 2008, she learned her family farm that bordered Arkansas and Louisiana would be sold. Adamant to preserve her family heritage and the farmland that her family had cherished, Mary moved from Los Angeles back to the south in order to sustain and operate the farm. She discovered that ‘saving the family farm’ had changed her life forever, and for the better. Today she admits that she is happier than ever — inspired, loving the farming business and now launching USA FARM STARS, which she felt compelled to create for the good of farming and the people she has met along her new path.

Sky Lee and Brianna Smith/Georgia State University

Sky Lee and Brianna Smith are students at Georgia State University – J. Mack Robinson School of Business.

The School of Hospitality at GSU and the students organize The Annual National Hospitality Championship event. This event will take place at the GWCC on April 12th 8:30am-1:30pm. All fees collected for the event will go towards a scholarship fund.

There are two parts in the event. One is a team/moral building competition where different companies’ employees compete doing various relay games in order to get the trophy and bragging rights. These team building challenges have been immensely popular over the years with repeat participants like World of Coca Cola and The Hyatt.

The second part of the event is a vendor competition where different restaurants in the Atlanta area compete in “A Southern Paradise” competition which includes Battle of the Biscuits, BBQ sauce off, Country Cupcake Challenge and many more!

Mike McCracken has been the founder of many companies throughout his career including McCracken Alliance, LLC (MA) which focuses on building business and leadership networks that foster peer-to-peer relationships, provide leverage through knowledge sharing and facilitate access to innovative value added business solutions. Previously, Mike was a founder of Tatum LLC, which became the first National Professional CFO Firm with annual sales of $200 million, and in 2010, merged with a $2.0 billion NYSE registrant.

Earlier Mike formed an internet services provider which sold in the late 90’s for several million dollars. He was also a partner with Ernst & Young LLP in New York, reporting to the Chairman and CEO, after being a Regional Director of Marketing and Strategy for the seven-state SE Region during a reorganization period to introduce a specialized industry focus and merger with Arthur Young which created the largest professional services firm at that time. He served as coordinating partner on the team of professionals that designed the spin-off of Eastman Chemical Company, a $4.0 billion Fortune 500 manufacturer, from Eastman Kodak and was business development advisor to the member firm in Japan. Previously a CPA in four states and CMA, he has served on numerous boards including serving as a founding member of more than 10 university based leadership networks.

In this ASTD Workplace Learning Special Edition interview, hear from Dr. Stephen Harmon. Dr. Harmon is the Director of Learning Technologies and an Associate Professor in the school of Education at Georgia State University where he promotes effective and innovative uses of technology

After majoring in English literature at Furman University, Stephen moved to Upper Egypt to teach fourth-grade English for two years. While there he had the opportunity to travel extensively through the Middle East and Africa. During this time he realized that there was a tremendous need for education and training in developing countries, but few resources to provide it. He decided to attend graduate school and enrolled in graduate studies in instructional technology at the University of Georgia,where he completed a masters and doctorate in instructional technology with a cognate in global policy studies.

Dr. Harmon then accepted a position as an assistant professor of instructional technology at the Universityof Houston-Clear Lake and worked there the next five years building a masters program and working to improve the university’s educational technology infrastructure. He returned to his native Atlanta, along with about 15 million other people, just in time for the summer Olympics in 1996 and joined the faculty in Middle, Secondary Education and Instructional Technology at Georgia State University, first as an assistant and then as an associate professor.

In addition to his academic appointments, he has served as theDirector of Educational Technology in the College of Education and as Chair of the Division of Learning Technologies. His research centers on educational uses of emerging technologies and has focused on elearning for the last few years, particularly with respect to synchronous online learning environments. He also conducts research on educational technology in developing countries.

He has served as president of both the Division of Learning and Performance Environments and of the Research and Theory Division for the Association of Educational Communications and Technology, and is currently President elect of that organization.

This week we welcomed our guests Karen T. LaMarsh of Clayton State University and Jacquelyn Willis-Walker an Educational Program Specialist at Georgia State University.

Our topic this week was the importance of life-long learning through continuing and professional education, the programs offered by their organizations and their ideal clients. Our guests also shared programs and opportunities for local Veterans.

 

Karen T. LaMarsh / Clayton State University

Director of Professional Development & Training

Karen holds an engineering degree from Georgia Tech and a Masters in Adult Education fromthe University of Georgia. Her experience includes eight years with the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University. Most recently, she was an internal auditor for the Board of Regents with the University System of Georgia.

She is currently the Director of Professional Development and Training with Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education. In addition, she holds the position of President for the Georgia Adult Education Association. As a Commissioner for the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), Karen is the Chairman of the Commission Executive Committee and sits on the IACET Board of Directors. She also conducts training around thecountry to ensure that organizations are offering the highest quality continuing education and

 

Jacquelyn Willis-Walker / Georgia State University

Senior Administrative Coordinator

Jacquelyn is responsible for recruiting and encouraging adults to attend college, especially our Veterans. In addition, she teaches English as a second language in Gwinnett and coaches and consults with home school parents on how to prepare their kids for college. Prior to this Karen was employed as a Forensic Toxicologist & Medical Technologist for over 7 years.
