In this edition of Global Leader Radio, we compare and contrast the elements of leadership that can instantly increase your ability to innovate and influence! Matt Hames and Colonel Marshall Irvin  joined Alvin to discuss the impact of global leadership on both military & civilian life along with explaining WHY both men “do what they do.” You are one hour away from achieving a breakthrough!

Here are seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Manage things, lead people.
  2. The military exists to ensure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

  3. “Facts are our friends.”

  4. People don’t buy “WHAT” you do, they buy “WHY” you’re doing it.

  5. Global Leaders do not practice CGG (Cosmetics, Geography & Gender).
  6. Find the metaphor in every success or failure.
  7. Hire a Veteran!

Listen to host Alvin C. Miles interview Matt & Colonel Irvin as they unpack these takeaways, then add their teachings to your leadership toolkit. Leadership IS a conversation!

Matt Hames / CEO, Acru Wealth, LLC

Acru Wealth, LLC, is a comprehensive wealth strategy firm headquartered in Woodstock, Georgia. Matt graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree, major in Management, with a specialization in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, from Kennesaw State University where he played basketball on scholarship for four years.  He is also a graduate of the Cannon Trust School.  Matt holds the professional designation of Certified Trust & Financial Advisor (CTFA), indicating excellence in the areas of fiduciary responsibilities, trust activities, personal finance, insurance, estate planning, tax planning, and investment management.

Prior to assuming the leadership position with Acru, Matt served as a Research Associate and financial advisor for The Henssler Financial Group.  He was responsible for the establishment and development of the firm’s relationship with First Cherokee State Bank, which culminated in the creation of CNT Financial in May of 2001.  In the short time since CNT opened its doors, it grew to over $400 million in custody assets.  In May of 2011 Matt led CNT through a redesign of its business model that changed the brand to Acru and meaningfully enhanced the delivery of the brand experience to the public. Opening a retail location that delivers personalized wisdom through a relevant experience while clarifying today and preparing clients for tomorrow, Acru is redefining how financial services are delivered through community based institutions.  Since opening, Acru has been featured in Fast Company Magazine, The Financial Brand and other local, regional and national publications recognizing the breakthrough innovation represented in the Acru brand and delivery model.  In early 2012 the Acru retail location won the Best of the Best Retail Design Award from the International Interior Design Association, their highest honor for retail space design.

Matt is on the executive board and finance committee of the Kennesaw State University Athletic Association and serves as director on the following boards:  The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Foundation, The Cherokee County Hospital Authority, and Timothy + Barnabas. Matt is a native of Woodstock, resides there, and is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock where he teaches a young adult Sunday school class.

Sue Watson, IP attorney, from SC Watson Law Firm (Scwatsonlawfirm.com )

and Inventor Donna Difloe, a Furniture Industry veteran and book author of How to buy furniture.

Dave talked about how he teaches inventors to talk about their ideas without disclosing material details and how to get feedback, advice and find the best plan of action to move forward.  There is a lot to learn and be aware of as an inventor and surrounding yourself with those who can give advice, feedback and suggestions is very important in minimizing your losses and maximizing your returns.

Sue Watson of SC Watson Law Firm shared her expertise on Patents, Trademarks, Service Marks and Trade Dress as well as Copyrights, Patent Clearance Analysis, Patent Portfolio Evaluations, Patent Intelligence.

Sue’s firm has extensive experience assisting start-up companies, universities, research foundations, and large, global corporations in achieving significant intellectual property protection.

We discussed the strategic reasons why having a patent portfolio is more powerful and puts you in a better negotiating position than just a single patent.

Sue talked about business model entrepreneurs can use to capitalize on their idea, what to do first and how to avoid rookie mistakes.

Sue shared about the importance of intellectual property protection in order to stay competitive in today’s fast-paced world.   It’s crucial to rapidly protect your intellectual property in order to enhance  your business growth and secure your business success.

She explained how a step-by-step, cost-effective plan in critical for a company to achieve optimum intellectual property protection of their technology.

Donna Difloe shared her success story or how she turned an idea for an innovative and versatile furniture into a flourishing business.

Donna started her own company, Design Dynamic, which became the “umbrella” for product design and development, intellectual property, marketing and speaking and training engagements.

Before going out on her own Donna was the first Exec. Dir. of the Interior Design Society, and also in Chicago, the Product Manager for Kroehler Furniture.

Donna wanted the comfort and fashion of living room furniture for her outdoor patio. So she created and patented drainable, upholstered seating – an industry first. The furniture wears and washes well. It is mildew resistant and it looks as if it would fit in perfectly with a well-decorated living room.

Lane/Venture of Conover, N.C., incorporated Difloe’s drain system into the cushions of a group of wicker furniture called WeatherMaster. Donna’s patented furniture system has been licensed to Laneventure for 20 years.  Love seats and soft wing chairs as well as wicker with cushions in various patterns are available.

Elizabeth Gordon & Kimberly Douglas
Elizabeth Gordon & Kimberly Douglas

Want to make your team meeting the most exciting part of the week ?  If so check out this episode the Chic Perspectives Show.

This week I had the pleasure of talking with internationally recognized team effectiveness and innovation expert, Kimberly Douglas, President of FireFly Facilitation about igniting the innovation on teams.  Kimberly has earned numerous awards and recognition and was recently honored with two awards for innovation – the SHRM Pinnacle Award and Facilitator of the Year by the Southeast Association of Facilitators. www.fireflyfaciliation.com

I got the chance to find all about Kimberly’s critically acclaimed book, The Firefly Effect, and how the concepts in the book have been changing the way leaders and managers think about their own creativity as well as that of their people.

Innovation is the way out the recession, says Kimberly. Businesses need to dare more to be different if they are going to survive and thrive through the recession.  Kimberly talked about how everyone can find that spark of creativity within them and what a tremendous corporate asset that can be to businesses.

We talked about the new role of leadership in corporations, no longer is the charge to command and control, but rather to inspire and creative an environment when collaboration can lead to the productive leveraging of all team members unique strengths.  Kimberly talked about how to find untapped talent within an organization.

Next we got into workplace conflict – surprise – you shouldn’t be by it.  Conflict is normal, natural and can be a great impetus for sparking creativity.  Kimberly shared how to make conflict a source of “creative abrasion” and avoid the time wasters of infighting, destructive sarcasm and ego battling.

There’s so much talk about strategic planning in companies, that often the plan is so overwhelming and complex, it causes a scattered focus – which no company can afford these days.  Kimberly shared how to keep the team focused on the marketplace and business goals.

Kimberly talked about how when you tap into the innovation of your team, infinite possibilities become available that can catapult your business results to new heights.   She shares tools and techniques for holding team members accountable and keeping them engaged.

She also shared with us the secrets of the world’s leading thinking styles assessment tool – the HBDI – explained how people can use these practical tips to immediately improve their communication effectiveness.

Kimberly shared some of the projects she has been brought in on and the specific results her company has achieved for clients.  She also shares her outlook for how companies are innovating out of the recession, the opportunities smart companies are spotting and taking advantage of and the changes she says to expect in 2010.

Thanks Kimberly for illuminating your light on some very complex and challenging business issues and reminding us all to look for our own unique spark of innovation – we all have a unique light to shine.
