Following a successful career in print journalism, she entered the seaport industry in 1993 as Communications Director for the Port of South Louisiana. In 1997, she was named Trade Development Manager at the Port of Gulfport, Mississippi.

Carrie Fonder / University of West Florida, Department of Art

Carrie Fonder currently teaches art and art appreciation at the University of West Florida.  Before coming to UWF in 2015, she taught at several institutions in the greater Detroit Metro Area, including the College for Creative Studies, and was the director of the Summer Art Studio at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.

The Before I Die Wall is a participatory public art project created by New Orleans artist Candy Chang: http://candychang.com/work/before-i-die-in-nola/

Before I Die

BEFORE I DIE IS A PARTICIPATORY PUBLIC ART PROJECT that invites people to contemplate death, reflect on life, and share their personal aspirations in public. After losing someone she loved, Chang channeled her grief and depression into this project on an abandoned house in her New Orleans neighborhood to restore perspective and find consolation with her neighbors. She covered the crumbling house with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with the prompt, “Before I die I want to _____.” The wall quickly filled up with responses, from the poetic to the profound: Before I die I want to… see my daughter graduate, abandon all insecurities, get my wife back, eat all the candy and sushi in the world, be a Youtube sensation, straddle the International Date Line, tell my mother I love her, be completely myself.

The wall gained global attention and many people have contacted Chang about creating a wall in their own community. Chang created a project sitewith step-by-step resources and thanks to passionate people around the world, over 1,000 Before I Die walls have now been created in over 70 countries, including Iraq, China, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and South Africa.  Revealing the community’s longings, anxieties, joys, and struggles, the project explores how public space can cultivate self-examination and empathy among neighbors and compassionately prepare us for death and grief. It has also inspired dozens of remixes that offer new ways to engage with the people around us. The Before I Die book is a celebration of these walls and the stories behind them. See much more on the project site and follow the latest Before I Die walls and responses on Twitter,Instagram, and Facebook.

2011, New Orleans, LA. Chalkboard paint, spray paint, chalk, abandoned house. 41′ x 8′. With permission from the property owner, residents of the block, the neighborhood association’s blight committee, the Historic District Landmarks Commission, the Arts Council of New Orleans, and the City Planning Commission. Installation assistance by Kristina Kassem, Cory Klemmer, Anamaria Vizcaino, James Reeves, Alan Williams, Alex Vialou, Earl Carlson, and Gary Hustwit.

American Homicide examines all types of homicide, and gives additional attention to the more prevalent types of murder and suspicious deaths in the United States. Authors Richard M. Hough and Kimberly D. McCorkle employ more than 30 years of academic and practitioner experience to help explain why and how people kill and how society reacts. This compressive text takes a balanced approach combining scholarly research and theory with compelling details about recent cases and coverage of current trends.

Laurie Murphy/Emerald Coast Keeper

Executive Director

Founded in 1999, Emerald Coastkeeper is one of 240 (and counting) member organizations of the Waterkeeper Alliance. We are a grassroots organization that monitors four main watersheds in the Florida Panhandle. Our mission is to investigate, educate and protect our right to swimmable. fishable and drinkable water. We believe that healthy waterways are directly connected to healthy communities and healthy people.

In our four watersheds, you will find many springs, creeks, rivers, bayou’s, bays and of course, the Gulf of Mexico.

Pollution can happen anywhere, not just from large industires. Some of the greatest concerns in our region stem from residential pollution.

Some of the more common culprits are septic system failure, erosion and sedimentation, nutrient loading from fertilizers, red tide, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, (PCBs) lead, mercury, animal wastes, industrial paint source discharge, oil spills, commercial vessel pollution, residential development, and household garbage.

Protecting our waterways and drinking water from contaminants is everyone’s responsibility. We can’t do it alone…we need your help!

Feel free to contact us if you want to volunteer or to report a problem. We look forward to creating a healthy community with you!

Pensacola Blue Wahoos

In December 2010, Quint and Rishy Studer announced their purchase of the Carolina Mudcats, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The Double-A team will move from Zebulon, North Carolina to Pensacola beginning in 2012. The Pensacola franchise will remain in Minor League Baseball’s Southern League.

“I am extremely proud and excited for the actions that are being announced today,” said Quint Studer. “Bringing affiliated baseball to Pensacola will continue to add to the rich sports history that already exists in the area. Seeing the future stars of Major League baseball in a fun, family friendly atmosphere will bring a new level of enthusiasm for the citizens of Pensacola and Northwest Florida.”

The new home of the Reds Double-A affiliate will be located at Blue Wahoos Park, the premier waterfront mixed use development on the Gulf Coast. The team will play the 2011 season in North Carolina before relocating to the new state-of-the-art facility starting in April of 2012. The Class A-Advanced club moving to North Carolina in 2012 will retain the Carolina Mudcats name.

“The Southern League is one of the most respected leagues within baseball. With this move we are joining several upstanding franchises, including the Mobile BayBears who graciously allowed us to share their territory to make this all possible for the City of Pensacola. It is an honor to be associated with a league that boasts talented alumni like Chipper Jones, Joey Votto, Alex Rodriguez, Tim Hudson and Miguel Cabrera,” added Studer.

Kelly Massey and Gerry Goldstein / SBDC

Mr. Gerry Goldstein

My educational background includes a BSBA in Finance from the University of Florida and an MBA from the University of West Florida.  I spent more than ten years on Wall Street in various roles within the investment banking community.  In my early years, I was a short-term money trader specializing in BA’s, CD’s, Treasury Bills, and I also specialized in using the Euro Dollar futures market to hedge cash positions. I collaborated with team members to build two government-trading operations.  My last position was with Merrill Lynch at its headquarters in New York on the institutional sales desk, specializing in short term money instruments.

Returning to Pensacola in the early 80’s, I started multiple businesses, including one of the largest printing businesses in the southeast, which supplied print to the US Government Printing Office. During this same time, I designed an online system to deliver printing contracts from the US Government and State agencies to printers throughout the US.  Currently, I own two companies, Salomon-Goldstein Properties LLC, which specializes in commercial real estate brokerage and Goldstein Properties which owns and manages commercial buildings. I have been active in promoting economic development in both Santa Rosa and Escambia counties for more than ten years and sit on multiple boards, including Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Board of Governors at Pensacola State College, Santa Rosa Medical Center, and Rebuild Northwest Florida.

Currently, I am an adjunct professor in the MBA department at the University of West Florida as well as program coordinator for the Florida Vet Training Program sponsored by Florida Small Business Development Center state office.

Kelly Massey joined The Florida SBDC at the University of West Florida in 2014.  As Regional Director, Massey oversees the operations of SBDC offices located in Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, and Panama City serving ten counties in the Florida panhandle.  He was previously the Center Director for the Henderson State University – SBDC located in Arkansas.  He was employed there for six years.
