While the main risk factor is if someone in your family has or had breast cancer there are a few others as well such as: if you got your period at a very young age or if you are obese or live a sedentary life. About 75% of breast cancer deaths are from women who didn’t get an annual exam. Mammograms typically catch breast cancer in its most curable stage. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share info on what to do if you have stretch marks. Stretch marks usually occur when a women is going through pregnancy. It is genetic and usually affects the middle layer of skin. Changes in weight (both gaining weight and losing weight) can cause stretch marks as well. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Sara Holliday who is the recent winner of top health blogger for her Fit By Sara blog. Sara is a licensed marriage-family therapist as well as a life and fitness coach. She is an expert in women and families health and wellness. She has had great success getting whole families in great shape. Her website is filled with great information for moms who want to get to their pre-baby weight. She shared some great fitness tips on the show like: busy moms and dads should put their workout clothes out the night before so their ready for you to start your day. Also since getting an exercise or weight loss program is difficult for most men – they should start a friendly competition in order to get started and stick with it. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy closed the show with personal safety expert Ingo Weigel author of the book Self Defense for Modern Times. He teaches the Revat Fitness technique. He shared some of his best self defense tips for women or the Fat Guy. Some people think that women need different self defense techniques than men – Ingo disagrees.  Ingo thinks that surviving crime requires more mental toughness than physical abilities. Size, weight, conditioning and upper body strength don’t make the difference. Ingo says that lady like self defense and anti-crime gadgets offer unrealistic guarantees. His tips were great. Number 1 – never go to the floor or ground to fight back. Number 2 – never start wrestling or grappling with your attacker. Number 3 – target groin, eyes throat. Remember you only have a couple of seconds to react and your attacker is probably stronger than you so be proactive, look the guy in the eyes  and take charge once you know a confrontation is inevitable. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Desi Bartlett who has been teaching exercise, health and wellness for about 20 years. She has trained some celebrities like Alicia Silverstone and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. But her passion is helping moms get their bodies, and their fitness levels, back through yoga. She still teaches Mommy and Me Yoga, Pre and Post Natal Yoga and Mothers Living Fit classes in Los Angeles. But the big news is Desi is the host of Acacia’s  new Prenatal Yoga exercise dvd. Desi says that yoga is primarily for flexibility and that you should supplement yoga with some cardio and strength training. She also explained that yoga works great for women going through all three trimesters of their pregnancy but that it is important to do the yoga a little differently when you are pregnant. She also said that some instructors who have never been pregnant have a harder time adapting their exercise workouts to their pregnant clients becuase they themselves have never experienced being pregnant. Desi also shared some great tips about how to choose a yoga studio. She said to always talk to the manager and make sure the manager matches you up with an instructor or classes that meets your skill level and objectives.
